Jorge's Social Media Survival Guide

I have Facebook, Instagram and snapchat. On all those social medias I will have to say that I am a person that watches what I posts and sometimes have comedy in my posts. People might have different impressions of me, but that’s what I think of myself on my social media. Before I post online is most of the time is will it offend anyone, and does it have any profanity (if it’s a repost from another person’s page).

There are pros and cons about sharing online. The pros are that it’s great to go and see the things that people have posts either funny or serious. Its also good to see the things that your friends are up too.  The cons on online use is that the government is always watching on what you posts. Most of the time you need to watch the things that you posts or else you can get in trouble by the government if you posts things about drugs and etc. Also if you are posting bad behavior on your social medias jobs that you are trying to get into might not accept you because of your bad behavior on social media.

Lack of control can really get you in trouble online. Let’s say that you made your own meme and you and a couple of other friends thought it was funny, but not everyone when you post it is going to think its funny. You need to watch out in the things that you posts even though there's always someone that going to be “butt hurt” or even hate on the thing that you post because that’s how people are.

Permanence will most likely happen to you when you post something online. Depending how long you post something because there is not going to be someone waiting for you to post so they can just screenshot it. People can end up screenshotting your post if you keep it up there long enough. An app called Snapchat is good to use if you want to know if people are screenshotting your posts because it says who has screenshot your posts.

Immediacy can also happen because people are able to see the things that you post right away. If it’s a posts that you had seconds thoughts on you might not want to posts it because once again people can see it as soon as you posts it.

I think that social media background checks by potential employees are important, but at the same time you won’t be able to have your private life to yourself because companies are checking your posts. It’s a good thing because you don’t want to hire a person that has a bad reputation on social media.

Free speech is kinda self explanatory. It’s the ability to say anything without being prosecuted for the things that you say. Freedom of speech does not protect you from everything, it’s to an extent. For example freedom of speech does not protect you from “Fighting words”, fighting words are words that would make someone that you said those “Fighting words” to commit an act of violence against someone.

Internet trolls are people online who make a fake social media account and mess with people online. They sometimes say that you have won a prize so they can steal your information. They also go under comments and just write things down to mess with people's emotions just for the fun of it.

The only thing to do in stopping trolls is to ignore them and just let them be.

The pros and in being anonymous on social media is that people will not know who you are. You can post anything that you want and people won’t know it's you. The cons are that your friends won’t know that it’s you.

My top 3 tips are: 1) Be careful at what you post online. 2) Don’t be a troll. 3) Keep your social media account on private.
