Karrine Tucker Capstone

As a senior at SLA, I chose to do my capstone on something I felt needed recognize not only in the SLA community but in the rest of the world. I wanted to shine a light on people with disabilities, taking time to acknowledge who they truly are, aside from what we see. A crucial part of my capstone was working with Sam (a student at SLA who uses a wheelchair), learning about her passion for basketball, and simply who she is. Sam showed me that one’s disability does not define them. My partner and I put together a video of Sam’s basketball games and our interviews with her, to share things about Sam (who has spina bifida) and things that could apply to others with disabilities. With sharing this capstone, I hope that others are mindful of the way they view people with disabilities and “remember that people with disabilities are people too, they just happen to have a disability.”
