For my quarter four benchmark I chose to study the famous painted, Julie Mehretu. Her style of art is more abstract and architectural, which made it difficult to make an exact replica of her painting. A lot of her paintings were untitled including the one I created, but most all of her paintings follow the same abstract styles, very few of her paintings have color. There was was no specific reason why I chose to recreate the specific painting I did, it was just more appealing, because it actually had color. While creating this painting I was a little discouraged, I kept asking everyone “does it look like hers” or “ is it ugly”. Honestly because of the lack of set structure no one can recreate an abstract painting as good as the first one. In contrast I had a lot of fun once I got comfortable with the painting. I began to try different with such as smudging the black shade with my finger to get the shadow effect, there were many different shapes and lines that I had to mock in this drawing which made it more complex. The materials I used to create this project were: tombow mono pencils, color pencils, rules, finger (for smudging), and white drawing paper. After I saw my final result I was actually very happy, it turned out better than I expected. If I were to redo this project I would challenge myself even more and use paint instead of color pencils, because that is what Julie used to create this piece.
