C.Harris Still Life Drawing

In my art piece of still life, I depicted a corked glass bottle, positioned behind a foamed banana. The pieces were displayed on a standard table in Mrs. Hertz’s room. When viewing the pieces the way I aligned them was to have the bottle be a strong vertical on the extreme left and the banana to be a strong horizontal with a curve on the extreme bottom. This allowed for a lot of negative space to be explored behind these two objects. This negative space contains the texture of the table these objects are sitting on.

In this composition I also remembered to include a horizon line on the very top of the picture which shows the edge of the table. This was important to show that the objects are not floating in space but have a place that they sit. I also tried to use some shadow and light, especially on the bottle. Because the bottle is transparent you can see the lines through it. The cork also has pencil marks to create texture.

In general, I tried to create a simple composition that is also strong because of its use of extreme large shapes and where I positioned the objects on the page. I tried to make the negative  space as interesting and important as the positive space. I think this piece is successful because it is balanced. I think I could make it better if I added more shadow to the banana as I did with the bottle. Also, I think I would leave more space under the banana so you could see the bottom and some shadow under it so that it really looks like it is laying on a table. All in all I am pretty happy with this drawing.

Charcoal Drawing

In my work it shows the because of the things I love and it is music and the song Take On Me by AHA I want my work to communicate that I’m a real creative and outgoing person with my music and how can display my love for this song and video in my artwork using different techniques. The tools and materials that I used were a charcoal pencils and i wanted to give this artwork a fading and lighting that was just like it the video . My first idea to know was basically a what wanted to do but with a pencil and my work not is actually using the charcoal. The process that I used to create my work was the process of just using my creativity and my art skills to display what I seen in the video and still using the charcoal. First I thought “how can I show this" then I tried different ideas but came to a final choice when I started drawing and fading.

My love for flowers

My project  contains a charcoal drawing of three flowers and a leaf. I decided to draw this because of my love of flowers. When completing this project, I decided to incorporate different lines and various shading techniques in order to complete my artwork. I am most proud of my technique and how much I believe it has grown these past two pieces. I wanted to communicate my love of flowers through  this artwork and I believe it was truly represented.

The first step I took to complete this drawing was drawing my flowers. This took several attempts due to my liking of how realistic I wanted the flowers to look. The second step I took to pursue this drawing was outlining and figuring out different shading techniques to use. I decided to create a mix of lines to shade in the drawing and I started to shade from light to dark in order to create texture. Finally, I finished by filling in all negative space with different texture lines. The mediums that I used to create this piece artwork, was a piece of paper, charcoal pencil, and a charcoal stick. I decided to use both charcoal stick and pencil to create more depth. I believe there are several pieces of artwork out there that are similar to mines, but I think mine varies.

"AmeriKKKa" By Samihah Maven
For this art project, I completed a multi-media piece of artwork. I am extremely proud of this piece because I put a lot of time and effort into this art piece.  My inspiration for this piece was the wrongdoings of this year's crisis. Being as though this was my theme, I decided to paint an American flag in all black in flames. The different mediums I decided to use for this piece was: acrylic paint, newspaper, pencil, and several paintbrushes. However, my attempts to complete this masterpiece was not easy at all. It took several attempts to complete the "flames" in the background. Each attempt, I did not think there was enough detail. Being as though the flames are very detailed, it took several class periods to complete. I used newspaper as the main component. I decided to use acrylic paint because I thought it would give off the "shine" and "texture" that I needed in order for this artwork to be a success. The technique I used for the flames, was a basic painting technique with a mixture of orange, yellow, and red acrylic paint. However, this artwork did teach me a lot about myself and what type of artist I am. I learned that I like to make artwork based off of things that are currently in my life; rather this is close to home or not. Yes, I do believe there are there are other artists out there who complete pieces like mines and I believe they all speak to the same audiences. Moving ahead, I aspire to create artwork that speaks and is political as well.

The wet eye

One evening when I was in Ethiopia in a refugee camp called May-Ayni I was watching a movie and there were many people watching too, suddenly we heard screaming, shouting and crying. Everyone rushed the door and got out of the cinema center. We saw many immigrants lined up and began prostrating with loud and strong voices of screaming, others crying. I was shocked to See the crowd and that condition and have no idea what was happening and why they were there. After few minutes I saw a woman lamenting, and mourning bitterly uttering few words “My lovely, you have gone from my sight forever” My life is nothing without you, death is merciless” I watched my two eyes filled up, I understood and said to myself that there should be a boat that is sunk or something like that. And in my guess, I was right because it is not possible to see immigrants prostrating in streets wildly. After some time the speech was given telling the crowd that there a boat was sunk and there were about 300 of Eritrean people in it. The tears of a woman in the evening are one of the memories that I carry in my mind. My art was an inspiration of that moment.

I art is drawing “the eye” that  I was on that evening filled up and dropping tears down from it. A wet eye that can show you the wrong and violent condition of life that is imposed on those immigrants by their own government and leaders. Immigration is not something that can be chosen but rather it is imposed through different acts of violence of human rights, oppression, hunger, imprisonment, torture your land and most of the time by your leaders. And the only solution that you can do think of is just cry out, yell, weep, lament and grieve and all of these can solve nothing.

I had to go through different processes to complete my art project. The first thing was choosing four watercolors, and they are red, black, yellow and blue. I had to mix these colors to see what colors I can get when they are mixed in pairs.  I used the black for eyebrow, pupil, and iris. Yellow for painting the whole paper, red for areas below the eyebrow and below above eyelids and to represent the tears. And blue I mixed it with black to paint the Irish of an eye. This project is a new technique for me because I am using art to communicate things that are happening in the real world also I thought that my art also would represent different things besides that it was intended to communicate. One thing I can change would be colors or the size of the art.

In my humble opinion, I have learned that art is peaceful which gives us a way to communicate anything and everything.

Interview with Dr. Andrew Spence (Temple University)

For Our Senior Engineering Project, 3 members (Abdulomar Tucker, Khafren Smith, and Stephanie Devlin) of the Prosthetics Subgroup traveled to Temple University to Interview Dr. Andrew Spence. Dr. Spence has a background in Biomedical Engineering, and whas worked on prosthetics at many different levels. We hoped to gain more insight on a cat prosthetic they are planning to create. Enjoy!!
