Chemical Spills PSA

Posted by Damani Knox in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · B on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 10:44 pm

In our groups PSA video, we choose to depict a student drinking ‘contaminated water’ and the effects of it. I wanted to do chemical spills because something actually happened near Philadelphia, in Bucks County recently. There was a chemical spill of water based Latex solution because of a pipe breaking in the Bristol township. I feel like chemical spills is one of those big money issues, something everyday people only care about if it directly affects them. Truth be told, everyone should give some type of hell about chemical spills because they should want everyone, be it plant animal or humanoid to be healthy.

I feel like I did well staying on top of check points throughout this project and looking things over. I could have acted in the actual video more, but we got our point across without that so that’s great.

The most meaningful part of this project to me was actually seeing the production of the video and how it came out. I know it's just a school project but maybe someone in school will see this and when their older they'll try to stop chemical spills or learn how to properly react in such a situation.

Q3 Benchmark reflections

What value do we see in the biodiversity and natural resources of the earth?

Biodiversity and natural resources are vital for ecosystem services, economic activities, cultural values, scientific research, sustainability, climate regulation, and ecosystem resilience. Their conservation is crucial for human survival, prosperity, and the health of our planet.

What human actions are associated with altering earth’s natural systems?

Human activities such as deforestation, pollution, overexploitation, climate change, introduction of invasive species, and land use changes have significantly altered Earth’s natural systems, impacting biodiversity, ecosystems, and their services.

How can individuals, communities and or nations live more sustainably?

As a whole society could consider the future more. If they did so, they would use resources in a more sustainable way if there was a risk that resource would no longer be available in the future. We could put laws and regulations in place so that we can monitor our harmful behaviors.

Reflection: How did this project deepen your understanding of sustainability?

This project helped me understand why so many people refuse to ‘go green’. It is very expensive, and most people aren’t able to afford such a sustainable lifestyle, therefore the people who are able to afford it aren’t making much of a difference because the majority can’t afford.

What information about your chosen industry surprised you most? Why?

The thing that surprised me the most about the transportation industry was the amount of good buses actually bring by carrying so many people and running so many of them. In reality it’s helping keep those cars off the streets. It surprised me because I always saw buses as a big pollutant. I didn’t think about the pros and the tradeoffs.

How did you contribute to your groups project? Provide specific examples. What were you proud of, in terms of your overall project?

I did the research part of the project, and I did the slide show presentation. On top of that I created a logo and a business card that could show that our business was really legit. I also helped paint the bus. I’m really proud of the bus and the way the slides came out because I spent a lot of time on them.

How do the earth systems affect each other?

Earth’s major systems interact with each other in multiple ways to affect Earth’s surface materials and processes. These systems are all connected. For example, water (Hydrosphere) helps plants grow (Biosphere), and those plants can break down rocks (Geosphere). So, changes in one system can affect the others.

How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?

Environmental science lets us understand why and how natural disasters happen, which can help us guess when they might happen next. For instance, looking at patterns in the earth’s movement can give us a heads up about earthquakes. In the same way, studying weather patterns can help us know when hurricanes and storms might be coming.
