Eulogy- Kiyannah McGee

For I decided to do it on my aunt that passed away 3 years ago in late December before Christmas time .  My aunt’s name was Julia . She was about the age of 43 . Unfortunately she has been fighting breast cancer for about 6 months . My aunt then gave up and couldn’t suffer anymore and then died December 18 , 2012 . I was in the same room as her when she died so it was a very sad moment for me and for my family . Although it was so upsetting I still do understand that she is now in a better place and I am happy to know that she isn’t suffering any longer .

My aunt actually played a big role in my life.  She obviously has been there my whole life. I would go over her house a lot and we used to always hang out together on the weekends . When I was younger she used to babysit me and my sister . We would always have a fun time . We would watch scary movies. I also remember how my aunt had a big nail polish collection . She was a very colorful person and loved to do her nails and she loved to do ours as well . Something else that we enjoyed doing together was going shopping . She loved to take us shopping with her because she did not want to wear old people clothes because she still wanted to dress as if she was young and she still wanted to be young like us .  One of our favorite stores was rainbow because I love their pants and because she loved all the color choices because she loves to be colorful .

I decided to create a skull remembering this certain person because she is my only family member that died that I actually knew before they died . Also the only family member that I really had a chance to know and love . For example my grandad on my mom’s side died and I wasn’t really emotional about it because he died before I was even born , so I did not really get a chance to know him like that so when I was told when I got a little older that he passed and I was not really emotional about it because I didn’t know him and I actually felt bad that I wasn’t upset about his death . Also I decided to do my skull on my aunt because she was a very colorful person so it was a little easier than doing my great grandma who died because she was very dull and I would have lose many points for not having any color even though it did describe my dead family member .

I know my sugar skull reflects that person because my skull has a series of different colors and different designs . I decided to use glitter for half of my skull because I feel the half of her that wasn’t worrying about her cancer was full spirited and happy . My aunt was always so creative . Like she loved helping with making my moms birthday cards because we would always go full out and make sure everything showed how much we loved her. My aunt used to be an art teacher for about 3 years so this project was perfect for representing her and what she did before she passed . One more reason why I decided to do it on my aunt is because she loved sweets ! For example sometimes my aunt would secretly give me and my sister more candy then my mom really allowed for us to eat … but she was so nice and loved us so much that she did things like that.

“Día de los Muertos” opened my mind and made me think of death differently . I know that definitely isn’t the best thing to go through but I think celebrating it makes it so much better than sobbing over it every five seconds. Why be sad and cry over their death when you can just be happy and celebrate what they did before their passing.
