Kiyannah McGee & Serenity Harris Capstone
The first source I found was an article called “Teaching Choreography - 4Dancers” The citation can be found below. The article started by comparing a dance choreographer to a teacher. This article is helpful to us because it explains the difference between choreographers and teachers. It helped me to understand how although Serenity and I may be good dancers/choreographers teaching it to another group of kids is totally different. The article helped us out by explaining some techniques that can be used while teaching a dance.

The next source that I found was found on a popular website “Nytimes.com”. The title of the article is “Dance; ABC’s of Choreography: Teaching the Unteachable”. This article compared the different styles of teaching when it comes to dancing. This article is a very helpful article because it helps us to seek more ways of teaching.

The next article I read was posted on the Huffington post. The article was titled “A letter from your Dance Teacher”. This article was formed in a letter from a dance teacher. The letter is written to a dance teacher from another dance teacher. This article is a very helpful article because it discussed how we can become better dance teachers from the perspective of another dance teacher. I was able to make connections to some things that were said in the letter. For example, where it says “ You want to be great. You want to work. You want people to see all that you have to offer. This article is helpful because it gives us advice from another dance teacher’s perspective.

Web. 06 Feb. 2017.The last article that I read based on techniques of teaching was an article posted by Edweek.org. The title of the article was “School integrate Dance into Core Academics”. The article starts off by comparing dance to photosynthesis. The article states “Photosynthesis may be an unlikely topic to inspire an opera or ballet, but in a 2nd grade classroom here recently, the children were asked to use dance to help them learn about that process.” Later on, the article continues by talking about how dancing connects to science and education. Since our school is a science school I thought this article was a very helpful article because it helps to compare the important pieces of my school to my capstone.

This article begins expressing how beautiful and unique dance is as an art form. Some people still believe that dance is not a sport. As a dancer, I feel otherwise. Dance is no longer just a hobby or an afterschool activity. It is a profession that a lot of people get paid for. It is a hard profession to get noticed in. You have to be extremely talented and unique to get hired for the good gigs. The article tells how dance is a good way to express one’s emotions and feelings. There are so many different genres and styles that all countries contribute to."Different Types of Dances and Dancing Styles Across the Globe - Buzzle." 8 Aug. 2016, http://www.buzzle.com/articles/types-of-dances-and-different-dancing-styles.html. Accessed 6 Feb. 2017.
After doing more research, I decided to research the most common styles of dance her in the U.S. to get a more feel for what styles of dance we should teach. I then found out that the most popular styles of dance here are Ballet ( including pointe ), Concert dance, Contemporary dance, Lyrical dance, Modern dance
And Jazz dance
I feel that this article is very important because it helps us to get an idea of what styles of dance that we should teach, Since Serenity and I both have a history with dance and different styles of dance the kids have different styles to chose from.

https://www.britannica.com/art/dance/Types-of-danceThis article is about the different origins of dance styles. A lot of “partner dances”, or duets, are seen as just latin dancing. Little do most know that various amounts of latin dances have different origins and influences from different countries. Samba, as an example, is a Brazilian dance, but with African origin. Tap dancing is a form of dance pretty popular in North America in the entertainment business that requires special shoes and floors for the target sound. Tap was also a dance created by Africans, but during slavery times. It was a way to keep themselves and each other entertained.

This next article is lists the Top 10, most well known, dance styles in the world. It starts off by defining dance and how it affects the people who do it. It is describes as a social interactant, an exercise, a profession, and a hobby. The article mentions that is also a way for people to tell stories and express themselves. The dance styles on the list are as follows: hip-hop, tap dance, yangko dance, belly dance, kathak, Gangnam style dance, Break dance/B-boy/B-girl, ballet, which also has its own styles, salsa, and line dance. I haven’t heard of some of these styles.

http://www.wonderslist.com/10-most-famous-dance-styles-in-the-world/The last one isn’t really an article. It’s more of an informative section of a website used to help people who would like to take classes at this dance studio learn what the classes are about. It was a little confusing. It mentioned things in the contents that didn’t necessarily make sense or correlate with past knowledge of dance styles. “Dance revolution” is the name of the dance studio that created the website. They made a list, as the other articles have, that is as follows: Open, lyrical, ballet, jazz, acro, hip-hop, kinderhop, glee, conditioning, tap, pointe, and yoga. Each “style” has a brief description. The part that was bewildering was how glee, conditioning, and yoga were alleged “styles of dance.” None of those are actually styles of dance, two of which don’t even include dancing.

Art and Math behind the Spiral of Theodorus
The spiral of Theodorus is based on the Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem is a that proves that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The spiral of theodorus starts with a right triangle. The right triangle is also isosceles meaning that two sides of the same length and then you have the hypotenuse. The outside length is always 1.

For I decided to do it on my aunt that passed away 3 years ago in late December before Christmas time . My aunt’s name was Julia . She was about the age of 43 . Unfortunately she has been fighting breast cancer for about 6 months . My aunt then gave up and couldn’t suffer anymore and then died December 18 , 2012 . I was in the same room as her when she died so it was a very sad moment for me and for my family . Although it was so upsetting I still do understand that she is now in a better place and I am happy to know that she isn’t suffering any longer .
My aunt actually played a big role in my life. She obviously has been there my whole life. I would go over her house a lot and we used to always hang out together on the weekends . When I was younger she used to babysit me and my sister . We would always have a fun time . We would watch scary movies. I also remember how my aunt had a big nail polish collection . She was a very colorful person and loved to do her nails and she loved to do ours as well . Something else that we enjoyed doing together was going shopping . She loved to take us shopping with her because she did not want to wear old people clothes because she still wanted to dress as if she was young and she still wanted to be young like us . One of our favorite stores was rainbow because I love their pants and because she loved all the color choices because she loves to be colorful .
I decided to create a skull remembering this certain person because she is my only family member that died that I actually knew before they died . Also the only family member that I really had a chance to know and love . For example my grandad on my mom’s side died and I wasn’t really emotional about it because he died before I was even born , so I did not really get a chance to know him like that so when I was told when I got a little older that he passed and I was not really emotional about it because I didn’t know him and I actually felt bad that I wasn’t upset about his death . Also I decided to do my skull on my aunt because she was a very colorful person so it was a little easier than doing my great grandma who died because she was very dull and I would have lose many points for not having any color even though it did describe my dead family member .
I know my sugar skull reflects that person because my skull has a series of different colors and different designs . I decided to use glitter for half of my skull because I feel the half of her that wasn’t worrying about her cancer was full spirited and happy . My aunt was always so creative . Like she loved helping with making my moms birthday cards because we would always go full out and make sure everything showed how much we loved her. My aunt used to be an art teacher for about 3 years so this project was perfect for representing her and what she did before she passed . One more reason why I decided to do it on my aunt is because she loved sweets ! For example sometimes my aunt would secretly give me and my sister more candy then my mom really allowed for us to eat … but she was so nice and loved us so much that she did things like that.
“Día de los Muertos” opened my mind and made me think of death differently . I know that definitely isn’t the best thing to go through but I think celebrating it makes it so much better than sobbing over it every five seconds. Why be sad and cry over their death when you can just be happy and celebrate what they did before their passing.

he vivido una vida feliz,
todo lo que tengo vale tan poco
pero por lo menos todavía tengo mi bella esposa.
Días se acortan
y hay más noches ,
Me inspire y aliento de muerte y sólo ver a la vista.

Eye Art
There will be blue skies...
My artwork is a representation of some problems that I see in everyday life. I decided to create a cross with rainbow colors because the colors represent L.G.B.T.Q. association. I decided to make it a cross because people like that are not wanted in churches and things because according to their religion it is a sin. I actually did this for 2 of my friends who are apart of it. I created this so people do not feel abnormal because they are gay and they still feel like they are wanted in the world today.

Abstract
In this interview I decided to interview my nana. Her name is Adel Armstrong . She was born in Virginia. I was told that the segregation and the racism was much worse in the South than it was in where she and I live now ( Philadelphia ) . During the interview we mostly talked about one thing. I think our main focus during this interview was segregation and desegregation. She explained to me how it was terrible because they were treated unfairly. They had different fountains… one was for blacks and the other was for whites. But the water fountain for the whites was a better one. Overall I feel like I learned a lot about the past thanks to my nana.
Research
Something I decided to do research on was desegregation of schools. From my research I learned that schools were first segregated in 1849. This was decided by the Massachusetts Supreme Court. All schools were segregated separating the blacks from the whites. White people were treated better at their schools whereas the blacks were not treated as well. These segregations lasted for a long time. But then schools were finally beginning to be desegregated. This all started at ‘Little Rock School”. This desegregation took place in 1957. Although blacks felt some kind of in equality then, they still felt unwanted because of the way the white people treated them.

Interviewer : Kiyannah McGee (Km) Interviewee: Adele Armstrong ( Aa) The Interview takes place Saturday night at around 7:00pm. It takes place at my house 525 widener. I interviewed my nana.
Km: Okay. I am Kiyannah and I am going to be interviewing my nana for this benchmark.
Km: In your definition what is social movement?
Aa: Social movement is when there is a group organized to desegregate any type of entity such as a school, restaurant or movie theater.
Km: I understand there were a lot of different social movements involved during 1957, why do you think that is?
Aa: Actually I was born in 58 so I can remember when I was a child and going to one of the first desegregated schools, which was an eschool and I was in the 5th grade at the time, so I was one of the african american students, who was chosen to desegregate that school.
Km: What are some examples of racial segregation?
Aa: One example , like I said before is the ability to go to a white school, that time I was the one of the african american students to go, as far as going to schools , going to restaurants , they had water fountains that were for uncolored only, ummmmmm etc.
Km: How were you treated?
Aa: We were treated as though we were not wanted, we were treated differently from the other caucasian people. We were treated as though we were interfering with their lifestyle and it was an adjustment that I had to make mentally in order to get through it and it happened , thank god.
Km: What was the outcome of desegregation?
Aa: Well, the outcome was ,we were able to go to an all white school Chared Elementry and after a couple of years, kids began to play with each other, you know the races, black and white children began to play with each other and the kids thinking about the fact that they are a different race, but I think the parents didn’t really allow the caucasian to play with african american kids.
Km: Why do you think these times got better over time?
Aa: I think over time people realized they are human beings whether its black, white … colors are only skin deep and start to look at people’s character more though than the color of their skin which helps them to really get along with each other and its the way you treat people with love and respect so let people know, wow you are just like I am and thats how I believe things got better.
Km: Did you live here during that time?
Aa: No , I lived in North county , Virginia
Km: Down south?
Aa: Yes, down south
Km: So do you think it was worst down south than it is here?
Aa: Yes, because I think the southerners is where it originally began it was more amp to follow generational, follow what their family did, it was like their grandparents told their parents and their parents told their children and I think it was a continuing communication of how blacks should be treated whereas in the North they didn’t have slavery and people were more amp to receive african americans or negro as they were.
Km: So, I understand it was very segregated back then, so today there are still racial things going on, so do you believe they will ever stop
Aa: Well , I think once the generation really begins to die off, I think its only certain people that are trying to keep the racism going, you know... ummm right now , now we have a United states that has inneracial marriages thats happening, I believe that later on as the years go by, there really is not going to be a race because there are many people who are mixed that you can’t tell who’s who. But I think the original rights are the ones who are trying to keep things going and for some reason the society is amp to change, I believe and I think its on the way.
Km: Ok, so we are almost done. Do you think it was harder for you than it was for a caucasian female , was it harder since you’re african american?
Aa: Ummm… yes it was harder because we were treated differently every time we went into a store, we was looked at as we were stealing stuff or a you know, we were looked at as we were different though, yeah it was different, you know, I guess since time went on you allow yourself to you know , get numb to it, it just becomes something thats norm. Basically us white (oops) I mean black children were treated differently than the caucasian.
Km: Okay, what is your opinion on the civil rights movement and segregation, about everything?
Aa: Well my opinion overall is that I thank god that it happened and I thank god that known, you know Martin Luther King he rose up , god allowed him to raise up to help desegregate and preach to the people that all men should be treated equal, he had to die for it but he died for a good cause. I think it was well worth it in the end because now we do have an african american president and thats the start, thats a huge start for racism ending , racism truly ending.
Km: And lastly, do you have any regrets?
Aa: No , I do not, and if I had to do it again I would, because it toughened me up , and confidence and boldness and I think god for that
Km : Okay, Thankyou
Aa: My name was Adele Armstrong ( Oops forgot to mention her actual name)
Km: Yay
