The painting I created is a black girl’s head just kind of...floating in space. I saw a picture on Instagram and it inspired to create a picture similar to it. I created this to embody the complexity of black women. I chose the limited palette project, so it was a bit harder to create the vision I had with 5 base colors. I used paint brushes that are able to hold acrylic paints. They were either detail brushes for the linework and accents or they were basic round or square brushes that helped me cover the entire surface. This whole piece was created on a canvas that I provided on my own.

I’ve always created pieces that were meant to catch an observer’s eye and that were mainly about black women, since I’m one myself. I’ve made basic galaxy pieces before, but I never knew what to make the main focus of the piece. I actually have never seen an artist do a piece like me and it’s hard to think about a past artist that has similar work, since my piece seems like a more modern style. There are some things I need to work on like shading, making the stars look like stars, and the distant galaxies look like galaxies. I’m most proud of the scarf on the girl’s head; the ombré effect that I gave was meant to just fit into the whole piece. I’d change the shooting stars and the planet below the girl. It was all kind of rushed, so it wasn’t the best I could do.

At the beginning of the project, I thought it’d be the easy way out. I figured a limited palette wasn’t hard, until I realized there were up to 5 colors I could use, and then the colors they make after mixing them together...which weren’t the greatest. I’m not the happiest with this, but I made a similar piece at home with more colors and, of course, I liked it way more. I wasn’t limited to 2 hours per week, and limited to my color choices.
