Reproductive Healthcare

Posted by Santana Outlaw in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 10:06 pm
Our video was based on the topic of reproductive healthcare, which involves things such as abortion, trans-rights, and more. I feel as though this is an important topic because we often see in the news that the government makes constant efforts to defund Planned Parenthood or regulate human bodies more than guns (shade). It's important to spread awareness about this topic to put an end to ridiculous laws. For this project, I interviewed Ms. Williams along with Adam. As a group, we interviewed a couple peers for the PSA as well. For this project, I wish we were able to schedule an interview with organizations such as Galaei, the Mazzoni Center, or the Attic Youth Center. These places often serve as safe spaces for queer citizens and free (or reduced) testing centers. It would've been great to have their input! The most important part about this is that it's a topic that's commonly avoided because of the intensity (it's not even that intense). People don't always know how to approach certain questions about reproductive health due to lack of exposure, so it's good to break it down in a simple-enough fashion.
In the interview, Ms. Williams made a good point about how low-income areas in cities typically have the highest pregnancy or STD rates because of the lack of access of education or health resources. Since these areas are (as I said) low-income, it's not easy to get an abortion or medical treatment to cure any infections or diseases. Lack of education in these areas also leads to people not understanding what to do in certain situations or know who to go to. Our PSA was created to emphasize these issues and assure that our viewers become aware of them.

Love and Safe Sex

After completing my artist study project about Keith Haring, I made the decision to put my own twist on his work. Rather than replicating a piece of his, I compiled a few of my favorite pieces Haring made in his lifetime. This piece incorporates pastel colors, as well as a few deep, cool colors. (The pieces I used will be linked below.) I tried my hardest to maintain the linework and simplicity of Haring’s work, but remembering that I wanted to make a tribute to him, in a way.

To complete this piece, I used acrylic paint, a store-bought canvas, Sharpie marker, and paint brushes (soft and medium bristle). I first traced the pieces I wanted to incorporate in pencil, then began to think about color choices. At first, I wanted to use bold colors, but soon realized I don’t often like working with them. Pieces I’ve done in the past have indeed included darker colors, but my favorite pieces almost always have pastels in them.

I struggled with this piece quite often. I wanted to also incorporate his “Ignorance=fear” piece, however, I still have trouble with painting words. I was able to paint “safe sex” on the canvas since it was a more abstract font. Unfortunately, you can still see the black marker at the top of the canvas where I made the attempt to write “ignorance=fear.” To cover this to the best of my ability, I made yellow and white spike-like brush stroke marks. There’s also pencil marks in some spots that I was unable to erase.

Keith Haring connects to my life in a more distant sense. He was a gay man living in the 80s with AIDS. He had an abstract, but simple artistic style. Many people know that the 80s was time where HIV/AIDS had an “outbreak,” for lack of a better term. Here I am, a queer female living in the 21st century, with a ever-changing artistic style. Times have changed- we still have homophobia, but it wasn’t a blatant fear to touch someone with AIDS, or be near a gay person. Not only does Haring inspire me with his pieces, but his activism for the LGBT+ community was executed in a subtle, but powerful way.

Overall, I’m most proud of the entire piece. Keith Haring has been a favorite of mine for a long time. (I’m going to college in his hometown!) I really like how I was able to make the characters in the piece pop out by using dark, cool colors. This gave a nice contrast against the warm, pastel background. I also like that I used sharpie to do the outlines instead of black acrylic paint. I feel as though the marker gives a bold, clean line. This piece has to be the best I’ve ever produced. I appreciate my color palette, as well as image choices. I’ve been in an artistic-rut as of late, so this is a huge accomplishment for me. I hope I can continue to grow as I move on in life.

Senior Capstone - Santana Outlaw

Posted by Santana Outlaw in Senior Capstone · Epps · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:01 am
For my senior capstone, I made the decision to focus on student activism. My passion for politics has been strongly represented throughout my 4 years in SLA@Beeber, through projects, classwork assignments, and class discussions. In order to represent said passion, I decided to document student activist moments. The video is only a portion of my entire capstone, so it's shorter in length. I made the decision to give back to the school community by creating a space where political views are shared with no judgement. The name of the club is Fundamental Rights for Everyone, Everywhere (F.R.E.E.) Club.
I created this video to show off students/teenagers that aren't just lazy kids. We sacrifice our time to give back to our communities, fight for our rights, and prioritize our lives. Students can too, be activists. In fact, society's youth often begin new trends; it's never denounced that our voices have recently had an influx of impact. Even though the word spread about my club, I feel as though this was a great opportunity to talk about the importance of student/youth involvement in politics. Too often, I've seen my peers pretend to care about an issue just for the sake of saying something. There's also the concern that it'd be overwhelming. I wanted this video to show the softer and less heated side of protests and politics-based discussions.
I hope people benefit from my efforts in the school, and that students here keep the motivation to fight.

Extrater(race)trial

The painting I created is a black girl’s head just kind of...floating in space. I saw a picture on Instagram and it inspired to create a picture similar to it. I created this to embody the complexity of black women. I chose the limited palette project, so it was a bit harder to create the vision I had with 5 base colors. I used paint brushes that are able to hold acrylic paints. They were either detail brushes for the linework and accents or they were basic round or square brushes that helped me cover the entire surface. This whole piece was created on a canvas that I provided on my own.

I’ve always created pieces that were meant to catch an observer’s eye and that were mainly about black women, since I’m one myself. I’ve made basic galaxy pieces before, but I never knew what to make the main focus of the piece. I actually have never seen an artist do a piece like me and it’s hard to think about a past artist that has similar work, since my piece seems like a more modern style. There are some things I need to work on like shading, making the stars look like stars, and the distant galaxies look like galaxies. I’m most proud of the scarf on the girl’s head; the ombré effect that I gave was meant to just fit into the whole piece. I’d change the shooting stars and the planet below the girl. It was all kind of rushed, so it wasn’t the best I could do.

At the beginning of the project, I thought it’d be the easy way out. I figured a limited palette wasn’t hard, until I realized there were up to 5 colors I could use, and then the colors they make after mixing them together...which weren’t the greatest. I’m not the happiest with this, but I made a similar piece at home with more colors and, of course, I liked it way more. I wasn’t limited to 2 hours per week, and limited to my color choices.

Q1 Portrait Project - "Sister Earth"

"Sister Earth"
"Sister Earth"
The picture I decided to create was meant to be Mother Nature's rebellious daughter. I depicted her as an anarchist to represent the massive increase in climate change, natural disasters, etc. The reason I chose this is that not many people care about or believe in climate change. The symbol of anarchy is kind of like her “new self.”
In order to capture my message, I used basic watercolors, as well as some mixed with each other. I had to use smaller detail brushes because of the minimal area of paper that needed to be filled. I started with a sketch in my sketchbook, then remade it on another piece of paper. Since I was working with watercolor, I knew that the pencil marks would show up more. Therefore, I erased enough of the pencil that I could still follow along with them. Since I was trying to create Mother Nature, I used warm, earthy colors. An artist that also used watercolor was Vincent van Gogh; one of my all-time favorites. The piece I included is Fishing Boats on the Beach. It’s simple, but captures a scene beautifully. His line work is more precise than mine, however still gives a “messy” look. The colors bring out the mood of the painting as well.
One thing I’m proud of in my painting is my color choice. I already favor earth tones, so this was a perfect opportunity to express this. Something I’d change is my line work. As a recreational artist, I paint with acrylics, or slightly watered down acrylics. I don’t work with straight-up watercolors, so this was an experience for me. I didn’t really understand paint-to-water ratios or the ratio of paint out of the tube for this project. Overall, I am proud of the piece I created. It took me a long time and I messed up a few times, but I think it was a quality piece for my first watercolor.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

Um...The biggest influence in my life I'd have to say is my...mom...

Why?

Because she gives me so much support & she like, encourages me to do things I usually wouldn't do.

How would you like to be remembered?

Um...I guess as...I guess as a um...fun, caring person. *Long pause* Mhm.

What's the best thing about being a teenager? The worst...thing-& the worst thing, my bad.

The best thing about being a teenager...is...I mean, you get more freedom than you used to so you can do more things. The worst thing about it is of all the times you get blamed for things it's because people think teens are so destructive & immature.

La Poesia y Mi Reflexión Proyecto

Posted by Santana Outlaw in SPANISH 2 - Moran - D on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 9:40 pm

For this project, we had to choose a famous Hispanic poet to describe the background of their life. We then had to provide one of their poems & write our own.

El/La Poeta: Mario Benedetti

Yo creo mí vida puedo obtener mejor.

Alguien

Alguien limpia la celda

de la tortura

que no quede la sangre

ni la amargura

alguien pone en los muros

el nombre de ella

ya no cabe en la noche

ninguna estrella

alguien limpia su rabia

con un consejo

y la deja brillante

como un espejo

alguien piensa hasta cuando

alguien camina

suenan lejos las risas

una bocina

y un gallo que propone

su canto en hora

mientras sube la angustia

la voladora

alguien piensa en afuera

que allá no hay plazo

piensa en niños de vida

y en un abrazo

alguien quiso ser justo

no tuvo suerte

es difícil la lucha

contra la muerte

alguien limpia la celda

de la tortura

lava la sangre pero

no la amargura.

Infographic on Social Media & Youth

Posted by Santana Outlaw in TECH 1 - Hertz - a2 on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 1:20 pm
I chose this topic because I felt like it was important that teens were aware of how often we all use social media, & what sites are most downloaded/used. Also, many people don't know certain statistics of teen internet usage & what most people use the internet for. (Talked about in my first fact.) Commonly, people just use the internet without being aware of what happens on the internet & how often they use it.

My project is from a band called The 1975. On stage & on their merch, their logo is a simple rectangle that glows. Since it’s one of my favorite bands & their simple aesthetic seems to commonly catch my attention, I chose the logo. This design was rather simple. However, it was more difficult than I thought it would be.

I chose this quote because people commonly say things they didn't mean to say on social media. Also, if someone sends out a tweet or makes a post on Facebook, they don't really know whether or not someone would be offended by it. I decided to put a keyboard because it applies to the quote & it's simple. I also chose the picture because it's somewhat dramatic (ha) & it adds onto the drama of the quote. Finally, this is a good message because a lot of things are started online that don't need to be started, just because of a misunderstanding.
