Portrait Project
For the first project for Quarter 1 we had to make a portrait that communicates something, and or reflects a culture or personal experiences. We had a choice of choosing different materials to make our portrait but our portrait had to be on a 4.25” x 5.5” piece of paper. The way I would describe my portrait to someone is by telling them to imagine the Mexican flag, Green on the left, White in the middle, and Red on the right. In the middle of the flag, there is an eagle in which you can’t see on my portrait because on my portrait I drew a pair of holding hands. The holding hands are mostly covering the flag on my portrait but you can still see the colors of the flag. Also on my portrait, the flag seems to be cracked there two cracks on the flag. So what I’m basically trying to say or communicate through my portrait is when the earthquake that just had happen in Mexico this year which was really bad. Many people’s homes and other buildings were destroyed. Many people died because of the earthquake, a family member of mine passed away due to the earthquake. So I want to show that people in Mexico can unite and get together no matter what and overcome anything that comes their way and that they are going to overcome it. So to create this portrait I used not to many materials. I just used watercolor paint, the watercolor paintbrush, and newspaper to keep myself from making a mess on the table and lastly, I used a Micro Pen. For the watercolor paint I just dipped the paintbrush in the water and then I rubbed it on the color I was using to get some product and then I started to paint. For the micro pen, I traced everything that needed to be traced after my portrait was dry. I believe that this relates to another project that I did in the 2nd or 3rd grade, where we had to paint the objects that were modeling for us. I used paint for both projects. For me getting the project done wasn’t hard. It was an easy process. I first thought of what I wanted to do. Next, I drew out the idea in my sketchbook and just drew what would be good. Then I started to trace that onto the paper that was given to us to use for our final product and started to add color and Lastly I fixed several mistakes if I had any. An artist who also is similar to my work is Frank Webb. He uses watercolor paint for his artwork and so did I. http://http://www.artshow.com/webb/ A technique that you should know is important towards your work is using your time wisely. Don’t do everything at last minute because then perhaps your project might not come out the way you would want it to. Also, there is really not a technique that I learned this time. The most thing I'm proud of is that I drew something that meant to me. If I were to get the chance to change something I wouldn’t change anything but the position the holding hands are.
What I learn from completing this project is that looking at other people's work we had different ideas and the creative was different from one another, we all think different. We chose something from experiences or culture that really represented us. Also just to have fun in what we are creating is what really counts.
