Self Portrait

This painting was meant to portray what I see when I see a picture of myself. How i viewed my facial structure, my facial features, my hair, etc. I wanted to incorporate pastel and soft colors so some of the colors i used were yellow and pink. Originally, I wasn’t going to add the hearts that were on the picture, but I thought adding them added something to the picture. The tools that I used to create this painting were pencil, I chose to go in with pencil first so I could create an outline and lay out everything and be able to change anything before I made anything permanent. Then, I used watercolor paints, watercolor brushes, and a palette where I mixed all the colors and was able to see the colors I chose to incorporate, and also see if there was any other colors I could use to help the other colors pop. The brushes were helpful because unlike regular paint, they were little and thin and helped to be more precise when painting. To finish everything off, I took a thin sharpie and outlined my facial features to pull everything together.

This painting is similar to one other painting I’ve done. That painting was also a self portrait. An artist whose work is similar to mine is Frida Kahlo, because we both painted self portraits. Although, I think Frida is able to put more meaning into her work. A technique that is important for this piece of work is being clean with the painting. This was meant to show how I see myself and I wanted everything to be realistic, so being clean and precise with the paint was important. A new technique that I learned was using watercolor. Watercolor was a type of paint that a I never experienced and it was a lot different with regular paint, like the amount you have to use, and how it applies to the paper. The thing i’m most proud in this painting is the effort I put to it, it’s not the best painting but I spent time on it and tried my best to make it the best I could. One thing I would change about this project is the actual outcome of it. I don’t think i’m a very good artist and it would have looked a lot better if I actually knew how to draw and paint.
