Gianna Flego Capstone

Posted by Gianna Flego in Capstone on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 4:38 pm

For my senior capstone, Jordan Williams and I decided to pair up and collaborate on something we both have a passion for; sports. Since our school has incorporated so many different sports teams over the past four years, we feel sa though sports should be something we honor more broadly this year. We wanted to incorporate all of the student athletes and appreciate them more for our final year, here at SLA. We figured that to show appreciation to our athletes and coaches, we should create a sports ceremony in honor of them. The process for our sports ceremony has came a very long way. In the beginning, in September, we fully planned on creating a full out banquet for the athletes. We first began by figuring out any kind of fundraising we could do, but in the end we got none of that done. We didn’t fundraise at all. In order for our banquet to be up to par, we would’ve needed to pay for tables, chairs, catering, refreshments, awards and invitations. By the time March came around, we obviously knew from there on out a banquet wasn’t going to be the way to go if we wanted to get our capstone done on time. Instead of rushing around to do a horrible job, we decided to make a ceremony. My partner and I have been on a very up and down journey to get our capstone figured out and finalized. Our final product is going to be SLA@Beeber’s first sports ceremony. Our ceremony will be held on June 2nd at 4 o’clock in the Beeber auditorium. And, Jordan and I will be hosting this event. I learned everything from time management, organization, patience, etc. My capstone story is really simple but we came along way from where we begun. I feel like this process has made me mature because we did a lot on our own and didn’t have much guidance throughout. We wanted to take matters into our own hands and I feel like that is the best decision we made through everything.

Bibliography:

National, Hazeltine. "Making Your High School Sports Banquet Memorable." Hazeltine National Golf Club. N.p., 8 July 2013 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article was written by Hazeltine National, a professional event decorator. This article was mostly about how to decorate your party area. An event such as this requires a lot of thought and coordination. National went through step by step on what to do and how to do it. Some steps she included was making it memorable with props, color coordination with school colors, honoring students accomplishments, table and seating arrangements, etc. This is super helpful to us because it gives us a basis on how to start our set up. It allows us to picture the decor we are most looking for and where to start that from.

Brennan , Cheri . "Creating and Designing a Sports Banquet Theme." Ezinearticles.com . N.p., 30 Aug. 2009 . Web. 4 Apr. 2017 .

This article was written by Cheri Brennan and it goes into great detail on what we need to create for part of the decor at our banquet. Sports banquets are suppose to be formal, since it is an honorable event. Being said that, formality is what we are going to aim for. She explains that lighting, backgrounds (for pictures), a podium, eating materials (napkins, plates, silverware), etc, are all important factors in creating a “formal” look. Knowing how to create a formal look is going to help us a lot in the long run because that is what we really want to come out of this. We want to create something so perfect that it will be memorable. Coming in with a very coordinated event will be something no one will forget.

Writer, Leaf Group. "Sports Banquet Invitation Wording Ideas." Entertainment Guide | Local.com. Local.com, 26 June 2011. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

Invitations are one of the most important things to include when creating any kind of event. Its most important when creating a formal event like a sports banquet. Since our event is honoring and congratulating athletes, that needs to be really broad on our invitations. They have to be particular and noticeable. The article explains what needs to be on the invitations since our event is specific. It tells us to include; location, attire, who is being honored and what the official agenda is. This really benefits us because creating the invitation is the number one thing to start with, after finding all of the general information about our event. The invitation attracts our invitees.

Berkowitz , Kenny . "Better Banquets." Better Banquets. N.p., 29 Jan. 2015 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article is about other schools and what they do to keep their banquets interesting. Sometimes, events such as this one can be really drawn out and people usually leave when it isn’t even over yet. For us, that is not our goal at all. We want to make it as involved and fun as possible. This article gave us different ideas to keep it interesting. It explains that involving as many students as possible is the best idea because everyone is being honored (which parents want, and more people will come). It also gave us the idea of selecting a few people, mostly seniors, to give a speech about their time at SLA and how their sport is important to them. We also want to include as many lower classmen as possible.

"Team Awards Dinner Ideas To Celebrate The End Of the Season." To Celebrate The End Of the Season. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article doesn’t have a main author, but it talks a lot about the food part of any sports banquet, or any party at all. In the article, it is suggested that before we start doing any catering planning, to have a all around survey on what people like. By having people take a survey, a more diverse list can be created, offering many. They give us ideas on what kind of food set up we can use, and we find it most helpful using a buffet set up. A buffet will allow our guests to have a little bit of a choice. Although this article mainly focuses on food options, it benefits us because now we have an easier way of figuring out an easy food plan.

Blankenburg, Eric. "Ideas for an Athletic Banquet." EHow. Leaf Group, 24 Jan. 2010. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This article goes over a couple of important things; decorations, foods, awards, activities, gifts, etc. We find this article most helpful when the author focuses in on awards. As a pair, we haven’t quite figured out what kind of articles we are offering yet. But, this article explains that the most important one to hand out to each sport team is “MVP.” This can open up a variety of awards that we could use such as “most improved” “most team spirit” “all around athletic” and many more. The article tells us that it is important to recognize and all and not leave anybody out, especially if they are there. As we have said before, we want this to be as memorable as possible considering these are the first ever athletes at SLA and this is the first capstone.

Shaded Flowers

Posted by Gianna Flego in Art 2 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 9:36 am

For our quarter 3 art project, we had a list of options we could chose from to create something. Personally, after the one I did last quarter I didn’t particularly like any of the other choices. But, the most interesting to create to me was the Value, Line and Texture Drawing. Speaking in a perspective of someone who doesn’t have much art experience or a lot of skill, I think this was the most simplest to create. You can come up with anything while doing a project like this because putting value, line and texture into one drawing is something easy to do. It's a collaborative process which creates something unexpected and beautiful in the end. My overall vision for this project was to be as simple as possible but to also bring a pop to it as well. I think brings a good vibe because of everything incorporated into it.

The process I used for this project isn’t complicated nor did I try to make it something that I knew it wasn’t going to be. I involved basic things; colored pencil and marker. But, to make sure there was texture within the drawing and to make it have value, I had to shade differently to make it pop. By shading differently, using my colors effectively and making my lines bold, they all work together to make a more eye catching piece. This artwork is quite different than my past projects because I usually try to go above for my grade. Now, I am trying to make my pieces subtle and that makes them not so harsh. I feel like using simplicity as a key factor in creating something makes your art more presentable. Trying new techniques always makes my work look different, but I feel like that really shows in this piece.

Not much came together to make this artwork. I never usually think too much about my projects. But, I do think that it shows that not much is needed to create something beautiful. I also feel as though using your imagination is a key point in art as well. Techniques are a big point in making your project the way you want it to look. And as an art student, I take past mistakes and other techniques into consideration while creating something new. Nothing major comes out of anything I create. The only way my art work impacts me is making me feel confident in myself when I get compliments or if I think it looks good. Art doesn’t have a direct definition in how it is suppose to look so I feel like whatever you do is going to make its own statement; that is what I took out of this quarters project.

My Reflection
In Environmental Science this semester we learned a lot about our environment. We learned how we as humans interact within it and how we contribute to it positively and negatively. Knowing what we do to our environment is extremely important because it functions off of how we live in it. In class this semester, we learned a lot about what is currently going on in our environment and what we can do to make it better.
My group and I did a pretty good job on keeping track of our garden. Although we did a good job on keeping it taken care of, the other plants around ours affect how ours grew. We didn't achieve much growth because other groups were around ours and maybe ruined the way ours grew. This is a prime example on how humans can affect the environment without realizing it.

Making It Your Own

In quarter 2, I decided to go above my normal standards. I wanted to be able to explore outside of my comfort zone and what I am usually use to. I wanted to do something that I can relate a lot to and that I knew would be challenging for me. Art is something that your suppose to express yourself through and that definitely conveys my project completely. Makeup is one of the most expressful arts to me. You can really do what you want when doing makeup; you can really make it your own. Although I know I wouldn’t of been able to use actual makeup as a project, I decided to incorporate some things and make it seem like a made up face. In this project I used glitter, different pencils shades (light shading and dark shading) to create actual features, an outliner pen and I even incorporated my own highlighting swatch.

I feel like my work conveys the idea that makeup can be anything you want it to be. Makeup something that is suppose to be one thing and there isn’t any right way how to do it. I definitely achieved that goal through this piece of work because it shows the unique and powerful vibes that makeup gives off. This piece of art is a lot different from the past projects I have worked on because I opened my mind to a lot more this time. Instead of going off of people I already know, I looked into different MUA’s such as Carli Bybel and Jeffree Star to get an inspiration. They triggered my more dramatic looking part of my project.

My piece of art reflects upon my daily life and experiences because I am very into makeup. On the weekends, when I go out or when people ask me, I do makeup. I get very into it and I kind of make it my own thing. It's something that I love to do and it is a way that I express my bubbly personality. Being able to do your eyebrows, eyeliner, eyeshadow and many more makeup world tactics takes a lot of time and patient in which I incorporated into my project. It includes a lot of thin lines, blending, mixing and perfection all in which I do on a daily basis while doing my makeup! I also like trying new things so I decided to put a little shading on the lip color as well.

Overall, my project conveys a personal interest of mine that I don’t generally put out there. It is something that I have loved doing ever since I was a little girl and something that I have perfecting over the years. I like the fact that you can incorporate anything into art and I feel like makeup is one of the most beautiful kinds of arts out there.

Standing Rock and Dakota Access Pipeline

There are environmental activists groups that are forming on twitter. On twitter the main hashtag that is used and most popular are #DAPL which stands for “Dakota Access Pipeline.” Considering how long this has been going on, the permit for the destruction has been denied. This means that work can no longer proceed. This is good and the way the people came together was effective because they were able to resist the moves that were about to be made. Environmental justice is an involvement of different people to get together and broaden the challenges that the environment faces everyday because of human interaction. Social media is obviously a whole other world, a bigger world. Using that as a resource, people can easily come together electronically and pinpoint the actions that are affecting the world. Also, word is spread more easily and effectively over the internet. I think if the government was more involved, or the news was more involved things would be a lot more serious. The more serious things are, the more attention is drawn to it.

Read: Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company.  (Links to an external site.)

The article “Norway’s Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company”, is an article that talks about how DNB is in favor of the North Dakota Access Pipeline Company. Over 3.8 billion in assets to help towards the project.

  • After reading the article, I think that Americans need to see the larger problem. Since a foreign company has invested in DAPL, nothing is sure enough to happen or get better. As people that live and grow in this country, I feel as though we need to fight and make sure things are okay and maybe even take charge of it for ourselves. More people should get involved and spread the word about what is going on so people have an idea of what could happen.

Spider Web

For the first quarter art project, my vision was to be creative. I really wanted to do something that others wouldn’t do. I also wanted to create something based off of the upcoming holiday, Halloween. I decided to make my color wheel a spider web because who doesn’t think spider webs are cool? I didn’t know how to represent my color wheel at first so I went on pinterest and found some ideas. Spider webs are also circular so I thought that would be cute as a color wheel.

I really like art and I like to think outside of the box. I want for my audience to see my work as bubbly and unique. This is what I want out of the color wheel project. Although I have never physically created a color wheel before, this project relates to my other works of art because of the creativity and colorfulness. Besides the eye appealing color, my work of art includes primary and tertiary colors along with paint mixing.

Art is something you need to be patient with. Sometimes it includes tedious movements and much attention for small detail. I feel like this makes the artwork better because more time is being spent on it. This is the type of things I do to make sure my piece of work is the best that I can make it. My color wheel is a really special piece for me now because I never knew I would be able to create something as eye appealing (to me) as it is.

For this project, we had to right sentences that have to do with the characteristics, conditions, origin, location, identification, time, date, events and opinions. Ever since this power point, I feel like I had prospered in this class. Although this wasn't my best project, the mistakes I made taught me a lot. This power point is not only something I learned off of but it helped me learn that all of Ms.Moran's projects are to be turned in on time, no exceptions and that is what I did.

Sugar Skull Reflection & Eulogy: Gianna Flego

Posted by Gianna Flego in SPANISH 2 - Moran - A on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 9:35 am

Gianna Flego // Sugar Skull Reflection

Last year on Christmas morning, a dear family friend passed away. I remember finding out, and just breaking down in tears because I couldn’t believe I never got to say my final goodbyes. Her name was Nicole and she was 26 years old. She was short, had brown eyes that that sometimes had a hint of blue and black hair. Nicole always brought a positive vibe to a negative situation and was able to make anybody laugh or smile with her corny jokes. She had two sons, Cameron and Jason. I use to babysit them all the time over the summer. But when she was a teenager, she had a daughter but had to give her up for adoption. You can tell by her attitude that she has been through a lot throughout her whole life, but the smile always remained on her face. She was the type of person you would cry to whenever you needed someone to vent to. You would have never thought that she was in such a horrible place until the day that she passed.

I always befriend the type of people who would do anything and everything for me. That was the type of person Nicole was. The first day I met her, was 3 years ago during the summer. My mom and her were talking with their other friend on my porch one day when I came home from basketball. As soon as I met her, our personalities instantly matched. Me, her and my mom always went out to eat or shopping. Or if I didn’t go she would ask me to watch her kids. What I remember the most about Nicole was that when I had nobody to talk to, she would always swoop in and save the day. Whether it was family problems, boy issues or I just needed to talk. I went from seeing her everyday until her and my mom stopped talking, I haven’t seen her since. But the little things she always did for me is something I couldn’t forget, even if I tried.

I decided to create my sugar skull in remembrance of Nicole because she is very important to me, as you can see by what I previously said about her. Also, I’ve never experienced a tragic death in my life besides her. I think that doing the sugar skull on her was a really good idea because her personality was so crazy and nothing stopped her from being herself. On the other hand, I thought that bringing the lose of Nicole back up was a bad idea, but creating something to remember her made it easier to think about. She was also really into arts and crafts, so the glitter and paint would have made her proud of what I made.

My sugar skull reflects my friend Nicole because she was a very open minded person, who was crazy, fun and loveable. The thing that stands out the most of my sugar school is the glitter on the very top. I put glitter on the very top because what she had to say, and what she always did was so crazy. Her head was filled with crazy ideas, based off the way she already acted. The glitter represents her because she was such an open minded person. Another thing about my sugar school is the blue eyes. Nicole had really strange eyes. One moment they would be all brown and then the next they would have hint of blue. My sugar skull is kind of a mess and crazy looking, but thats just because Nicole was a blunt person. If you knew Nicole then you would completely understand why it looks the way it looks.

When I lost her, I didn’t think that my life would ever be the same without her. It was such a shock to be told that she wasn’t on this earth anymore. No laughter, happiness. Anything. Losing someone who meant so much to me was really heartbreaking. She was taken away from the world at such a young age and its a sin. She suffered enough when she was alive, so now she gets to rest easy and be at peace. Dia de los Muertos really brings an enlightenment to how I feel about her loss now. I think I should start remembering all the great times we had together instead or mourning her loss. It opens up my mind to seek for a better way to remember her, not to cry about losing her.

We were suppose to create things concerning a person that we had lost in our life. When I was working on my sugar skull and my mask, it brought back memories of my friend Nicole. This project taught me that thinking of the person that is no longer here can be a surprisingly, big help with grief. After I worked on this project it made me deal with the loss of her a lot of easier although she died a year before that.

Abstract

In this interview, Gianna Flego interviewed her Mommom, Celeste Flego about the Civil Rights Movement. Celeste remembers her time back when not everyone was equal and explains the horrors of MLK and the Kennedy brothers death. She gets into the time when she witnessed different signs of segregation and the things that she did not participate in. This interview sums up what white teenagers did during the rough times of the Civil Rights Movement. She reveals how she felt during the rough times and the outlook she had on her country.

Research

In 1955 the Civil Rights Movement began because of Rosa Parks. During the Civil Rights Movement, the segregation between black and white stayed the same. They used different water fountains, medical care, education, transportation etc. This was going on for a while and MLK and the Kennedy Brothers were determined to stop it. Unfortunately they were shot and the African Americans weren't happy. Even though segregation continued, they created a path for the black people.

GF: Good evening, and I am Gianna Flego, here with Celeste Flego on May 19th 7:16 pm. Hi Celeste, how are you?

CF: I’m fine Gianna.

GF: Okay! Would you mind answering a few questions about the Civil Rights Movement for me?

CF: No not all.

GF: Okay lets begin. Do you remember the Civil Rights Movement?

CF: Yes I do.

GF: And could you tell us a little bit about it?

CF: Ah… the Civil Rights Movement was not just about the rights of minorities. It included gay and lesbian rights, the women's rights… I remember that. I was growing up, in grade school when it started then I was entering high school. So I really didn’t experience that much of it.

GF: Okay… Did this event affect your family?

CF: Well, later on when it was starting to be televised, we watched the news a lot and I just couldn’t get over, you know, what was going on. It was something that was suppose to be peaceful, peaceful marches turned into very violent things and thats the way it affected us as a family.

GF: And did it affect, you specifically?

CF: No not really because when I was in high school, my high school, Hallahan, was segregated. We had orientals, we had Hispanics, African Americans. It was a very segregated school. Then, when I entered the work field, wherever I worked… the dental field or medical field, it was prejudice. They hired you based on your skills.

GF: And I know that you said, you were young most of the time this was happening but did you understand what was going on?

CF: Did I what babe?

GF: I know that you said you were young going through this time period, but did you understand what was happening?

CF: When I was younger? Or when I got older?

GF: Both.

CF: When I was younger no because our neighborhood was mainly white and our grade school was mainly white. Like I said to you, thats when I thought nothing of it. I wasn’t that kind of a person.

GF: And did your school change? Education…

CF: No. Not at all. If anything, more minorities were going into my school. You can see from my freshman year to my senior year that there were more, you know, minorities entering the school. One of my best friends from where I worked at the medical field she was at my wedding, on of my best friends. And unfortunately, as we get older, Gianna you’ll see, from your teens, twenties, you lose friends. Not because of the color of their skin but sometimes that happens.

GF: Did you observe different scenes of discrimination at any time?

CF: You mean during like, my high school years? In my neighborhood?

GF: Anytime!

CF: No, not at all. It was a white neighborhood that I grew up in. So like I said to you, the only things that I seen were in the news, paper.

GF: What did you see during the news?

CF: Well it was unfortunate what they did. What started out that was suppose to be peaceful marches with John F. Kennedy in the 60’s was horrible. 3 of the most important men were assassinated, were trying to get equal rights for the minorities, were all assassinated. They preached peaceful demonstrations and as I got older it didn't turn out to be that way, unfortunately.

GF: The last question I have for you is, did you experience the full effects of the Civil Rights Movement?

CF: As far as marching for them?

GF: Anything!

CF: No not really, Gianna. I mean, I seen, like I said, the only time that I seen acts of discrimination was on TV. In fact, even the girls that I worked with or what to school with, never brought it up. Ah… we never really talked about it, maybe only once in a while you would hear somebody talk about it. But that was all. We didn’t see any of that. I, never seen any of that… Just TV, or papers.

GF: Okay, well thank you for your time and I appreciate you letting me interview you!

CF: You're welcome, anytime.
