Lucia Idriss capstone

Posted by Lucia Idriss on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 9:41 pm

Thought these past few months of determining what I would like to do for my senior capstone considering I had a lot of options. But I finally settled on one, my career as a fashion designer. It has been a really tough struggle getting to the point where I am now. In the beginning, getting started was very complex for me. Learning how to sew and also picking out which designs I’d like to start off with.I bought my first sewing machine in late august but did not begin to actually use it until december and I had issues with it as well where I had to stop sewing at home and even come in early to school to use the school's machine. My first Fashion show where i was a designer and not a model took place this year at Columbia University in New York city. I was scouted through social media to participate in their show and I was truly honored especially as a new designer, This was huge for me. I met a lot of great people and designers that attended the most prestigious of Fashion design schools, ( Parsons, The New School and Fashion Institute of Technology ) I winded up going to that show alone, with no one to accompany me and see my dreams come to life but it was still a great experience even though I had to bask in it by myself.

Why is this useful? This is useful because this is a designer I idolize and someone who has the same envisions I have for my brand and Business

Why do you trust this source? Because this is something that she has created from the ground up and something that has been platformed across social media

What questions do you still have? How long ago did she start sewing.

This is useful to me in two ways, one, vougue is a magazine that I always wanted to write for when I newly introduced properply intot he fashion industry which also led me to begin blogging, http://artnstyles.weebly.com . But most importantly it taught me the ropes of the fashion industry and also brung me to my love, 90s Versace SS/ 94. One of my greatest inspiration for the clothing I create now.

When I first created my tumblr years ago. I just fell into a brand new world, fashion, art, and the passion that lies in between it. Personally I’ve always loved it and wanted to be a part of it, but in my way and not falling in with the other girls who  created the same looks over and over again, I wanted to stand out and in many ways I did which brought me to where I am now.

This is useful to me because Solange is a huge inspiration to me through music and also Fashion, her style is simple elegance, she doesn’t have to do much to stand out in the crowd and that is something I aspire to become and also what I love about her also her music is just so soul full that it kind of dresses you in a way. I trust this source because everything seems accurate and up to date.

How will she continue to grow as an artist and fashion icon.

“ Everything I learned about getting dressed, I learned from pop music. I grew up in the 80s, at the pinnacle of pop’s pomp and pageantry. It’s hard to imagine oneself back to those days, before “pop” became the pejorative term it is – shorthand for the interchangeably banal warbling that is a pretext for Saturday-night TV. In the 80s, pop was the main attraction – it was a genre so broad and vibrant, musically and aesthetically, a sparkling explosion of hooks and looks in the age of the music video, of unreality TV. Pop stars seemed to be from another planet and dressed to demonstrate as much. Madonna, Kate Bush” this useful for that quotes entire statement. I trust this because this is coming first hand from someone who lived through that generation and also was influence the same way I was.

Was other people inspired by music of the fashion industry.

  • Date Accessed : February 03, 2017

This is useful to me because I incorporate my fashion with culture and I feel as though the culture of different ethnicities is what made the fashion industry what it is now. “ Fashion— undoubtedly— reflects culture. All major trends and styles of the past, in one way or another, came to be by way of cultural influence. Throughout history, this is particularly noticeable in the realm of women’s fashion. Only at the turn of the 20th century, when women were beginning to more strongly fight for equal rights, were women first seen wearing pants.” I trust this source because it backs up each fact and has resources. Has culture appropriation been depriving the fashion industry?

“ Fashion is in love with art like never before. From clothing design to catwalk show art direction, major labels to boutique houses, the word of fashion is falling over itself to involve important names from a diverse range of the visual arts. It’s hardy surprising — after all what is fashion if not wearable art — and these collaborations between the disciplines are certainly mutually beneficial. Fashion, often unfairly judged as one of the more frivolous applied arts, gains serious cachet by association, while the artist reaches a wider, more populist audience.”

This is useful well because of that quote. Fashion is wearable art. I trust this source because I feel as though I can relate to what they are saying because it is true. NONE.

What factors affected your garden?  The water cycle and atmosphere after our plants and how they grew, for example, our lettuce along with everyone else grew the fastest due to the weather and also because of water cylce it was reviving
What conclusions can you draw based on your observations?
The it will take a while for the rest of the plants such as the basil to grow but for more climate trained plants they will be able to grow much faster

Tower Gardens have helped with my understandings of environmental science by showing me that there are mor than two ways to grow healthy non- gmo/ pesticide filled food around me, and we can actually help out our communities physically and mentally by planting these foods, we can also so polluting the community this way as well.

Sierra Leonean woman and Italian woman's life expectancy when living with HIV

Mrs. I

Statistics

There is no correlation between HIV and life expectancy in females within the countries of Sierra Leone and Italy.HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS ( HIV) "Unlike some other viruses, the human body can’t get rid of HIV completely. So once you have HIV, you have it for life. HIV attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV reduces the number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body, making the person more likely to get infections or infection-related cancers. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease. HIV is an easily contracted disease that can be transmitted through breast milk, sexual activities, and also blood.Countries such as Sierra Leone are underdeveloped and do not have access to all the resources needed to sustain incurable diseases such as HIV, whereas Italy has that kind of access because they are a more developed country.  I wanted to learn more about those whom have been infected and why they’ve been infected. To truly determine what the data points on the graph represent, from the least to the greatest. So now I will test whether your location and income affect the life expectancy in women with HIV.

When I first began I asked myself questions such as : How many of these women were sexually active before marriage and where these women sexually abused to contract HIV? So I took those questions to the web to find out that, yes sexual abuse was used as a form for some of these woman to contract HIV, especially in Sierra Leone during the war time. As I searched around even further I came an article ( lifeinitaly.com ) says “ In the past sex was viewed as a taboo subject. In Italy, like so many other European countries, this was perhaps mostly due to the powerful influence of the Catholic Church on Italian society. Sex was not a topic discussed by people in public, nor did it have a presence in the media.” and “ The average age for the first sexual experience is currently 17 in Italy. This is a difference of up to four years compared to the past, in particular the 30's-40's, when women generally had sex for the first time when they were, on average, 21-22 years old. Not only has the age for first experience changed but so has the context.” So could this also be a reason as to why HIV has such a high testing rate in Italy? Yes. And that evidence can be found on the gapminder graph that I have created.

The graph on gapminder tells a story of the women in Italy and Sierra Leone living with the HIV disease. In the graph you can clearly see that there is no positive nor negative correlation between the two countries. But you can also see that Italy has a larger bubble and also a longer life expectancy than women in Sierra Leone. The bubble represents the amount of women infected by the HIV disease, but how is it that they are living longer than the women who actually have  a lower HIV infection? Poverty, many women in Sierra Leone live in poverty, they are not expected to live as long because treatment in sometimes non affordable so they wind up passing because they can no longer take care of themselves. But as for the women in Italy they are more financially equipped so they can then actually take care of themselves to live much longer. The graph’s story has been told as to what the bubbles and correlations represent.

Now I also asked myself “ does living circumstances affect treatment availability? “ and my answer to that is yes. Some people who have been diagnosed with HIV cannot afford treatment because they are too poor, but based off of the graph that seems to have not affected the life expectancy for those women whom have been diagnosed. But in recent affairs I have noticed that the graph in 1990 Italy’s life expectancy increased, and there must have been a more affordable access to the treatment. This same increase also happened in Sierra leone in 2000 and remained at that same rate in 2006 going forward. So I believe the same affect that happened in Italy also Happened in Sierra Leone.

In conclusion, from my research I can say that HIV does affect life expectancy in Females, and I can conclude that your financial statement also plays a part in whether or not you will receive treatment for the HIV disease. But I can still remain to say that there is no correlation on the graph determining life expectancy and HIV in Sierra Leone and Italy.

Illegal waste dumping

Posted by Lucia Idriss in Environmental Science · Aziz · D on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 10:49 pm
This unit in Environmental Science we spoke highly about pollution and how it affects we as human being and also the earth. I found this to be a very interesting topic because it was almost as if we were living in our own filth, and who wants to do that? With new chemicals and waste always polluting our environment there was almost no way to really clean it. I recently stumbled across a geographical image of the earth, from 1975 compared to 2013, The difference was shocking to see how much we were killing Mother earth, and by killing the earth we were killing ourselves. Which inspired us to choose the topic of Illegal waste dumping to reduce our geographic footprint. My group and I researched several of examples we could use to create a video that would really inspire those around us to stop illegally dumping waste around the city because not only does it make our city look disgusting but it also pollutes the air we breathe and the water we drink. I contributed to my group by finding the articles to really hit home with an idea, I also gave input about the script and how we should act out each scene so that it would sound more believable and less as a commercial. I believe as a group we worked together well even when we has a little miss communication, I think we as a group could have worked on our editing a lot more. video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnPWFQtlBFU

1.

  • How are people using social media to fight for social justice in this particular situation?

People use social media to fight for social justice by using their platform to inform those around them and bring awareness

  • Research hashtags people have been using.

#NoDAPAL

  • How effective are these methods of action?

They’re actually very effective because a lot of celebrities involved

  • What is environmental justice and role does social media play in fight environmental justice?

It brings more people together from all around they may not be listening to news or reading blogs.

  • What do you think can improve the strategy?

Get even bigger people involved so they could possibly put an end to it.

2. Summarize and write your opinion to the article

Norway’s largest bank sold all of  their assets to try and help the North Dakota pipeline cut all ties with other banks that they took loans from. It explains as to how Pennsylvania is not involved in the North Dakota pipeline issues, but they do speak on how they’re contracts can be renegotiated or even terminated if they do not complete the work on time and at this rate they may not. Personally I am quite disgusted due to the fact that another country  is getting involved with our state affairs and is backing it.

  • Seeing as that a big shot foreign company just divested from DAPL, what would you like to tell the American people to do? How can the American people and government create an environmentally just America? Be specific and explain why your suggestion is helpful in creating a just society.

I would like to tell the American people that they now have the chance to stop this pipeline from ruining the lives of the Native Americans. We as americans have the power to use our voices to try and prevent this horrible things from happening while we still have the chance.

So for part two it's actually an astronaut and I want the astronaut to be leading into one of the other images and I used 3 different shades of gray white and black paint individually as well. So far I've really enjoyed creating the project because in the Process I did acquire new skills. And I want to also include some asteroids in the background as well.

For my quarter 1 project I painted on a shade and it was of a flag being held. I used various colors along with mixing some. I came up with the idea with the help of my class mates. I wanted to bring our vision to life because we are a science base school along with createtivity, so why not for the aterroids I just used a brush and dabbed it across the shade and I personally would like to add more to the shade such as a moon

Our project was based off of the song Shine bright like a diamond. In our project we positioned to the lights bright make it seem as if the diamond itself was lighting. Only one bulb does not turn on to light but hat has 3 bulbs one battery and Is able to be worn although it may be a little heavy on the head due to the battery. There is a switch on the side to turn on/off the lights. There are positive and negative wires running through the hat.  Shine bright like a Diamond.
