Think Before you Post
Think Before you Post
By:Katherine Russell
Amanda Todd is mostly known for her YouTube post of her telling her story with flash cards. Her death was lead to cyberbullying(online and offline) and harassment. Her story started during a facetime online with some friends. They dared her to flash on camera, Amanda then flashed her friends, at first she didn’t think of the consequences. How immediacy in this story is that the next day (after Amanda Todd flashed her friends), the police came to Todd’s home, saying that someone took a picture of her flashing. The picture was posted online and became viral. Amanda tried her best to get it down, but a man took a screenshot of her chest and sent it to everyone she knows.
"I can never get that photo back," she wrote. "It's out there forever." quote Amanda Todd. This lack of control and performance is what drove Amanda to drugs, depression, cutting and a suicide attempt with bleach. Amanda also tried to escape her bullies by moving from towns and schools. Even though the picture was Amanda had the choice to flash or not, her lack of control online is what lead to her death. How permanence played in this story is that people who saw and took a screenshot of the picture would never forget about it. Also no one would let her forget about it either. If I ever had the chance to warn Amanda about her action, is that think before you do, because whatever you do it can haunt you forever.
