Caleb Hughes Capstone

Caleb Hughes SoundCloud

For my capstone I decided to create a body of music consisting of usually hip-hop/rap beats that I would make over the course of the senior year. This body of music is a sort of mixtape that I would share with the world and show what I can do outside of school. I chose to do this mixtape because it shows what my hobby outside of school is. It also shows the progress that I made since my 9th grade mini course. I made the beats on FL studio. Over the course of about 7 months, I made somewhere between 20 and 30 beats. I chose 10 of them and put them on SoundCloud. I also sent them to my brother so he could send it to some of his friends to get some feedback. That is all.

Abandoned Homes and Vacant Lots

Individual Reflection
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6jlqrvm9gA&feature=em-share_video_user

Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form.
Provide a reflection on how you contributed to the project and the role you played in the group.
What did you do well and what could you have done differently?
What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA?

For the project we chose to do vacant lots and abandoned homes in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a city with a lot of litter and abandoned homes. I feel that this is a result of environmental injustice. Our video covers the problems with abandon homes and the lots that are filled with trash. We have interviews on how people feel about them and what we can do about them. We all participated in the project I helped with some of the research. When it came to the actual video, I gave the outro to the video and I gave some ideas on how the video played out. I could have gotten more b roll. The video would have been longer and most likely better. But other than that I think the video was good especially the interviews.

Questions
  1. How are people using social media to fight for social justice in this particular situation?

People are using social media to create awareness about the pipeline and the environmental justice

  1. Research hashtags people have been using.

Examples of the hashtags that are being used are

#dapl #standing #

  1. How effective are these methods of action?

The hashtags on social media has led to news recognition causing more people to protest against the construction of the pipeline

  1. What is environmental justice and role does social media play in fight environmental justice?

Environmental Justice is creating a just environment for every person of every color religion and ethnicity.

  1. What do you think can improve the strategy?

I think they can only create more awareness.

 Article Summary

This article is about how Norway DNB sold its assets for the pipeline. DNB is the largest bank in Norway and they sold 3 million dollars of assets. The bank is thinking about getting rid of its loans for the pipeline. The loans are 10 percent of the pipeline’s construction. This DNB is not connected to the DNB in Pennsylvania, DNB first. DNB first is not involved in the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The article also states. It is possible the pipeline’s might be cancelled or at least renegotiated because they wouldn’t meet the deadline of January 1, 2017. There is still hope for the fight against the DAPL.

This is wonderful. This shows that if you actually have a voice that matters. All the hashtags and mentions on social media has given the DAPL problem more recognition and this is a result of it. This will most likely set off a chain of events with other banks and loans given to the company to build the pipeline.

How to Sample using FL studio 12

Posted by Caleb Hughes in TECH (INTRO TO DESIGN MULTIMEDIA) - Hertz - C2 on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 10:56 pm
For my tech project I made a video on how to create a sample on FL Studio. In the first quarter I created a beat on Fl studio. This was my favorite project. I expanded upon this by learning how to sample in my free time. I took one of my favorite songs then found the tempo of the song. I then singled out the part of the song by using a plug in called slicex. After this I had to delete the everything else in the song. That is how to sample.

Mr Hussey

Reflection

Yesterday, Me, Savion, Troy and Obasi worked for the Committee of 70 in the 59th ward. Our job was to survey voters after they voted in the polls. Some people answered and some either just walked right by us or said no about taking the survey. The people who did take the survey were most likely around the age 50 to 60. I think we got to survey one young person. We went to the waterview recreation center. Then we went to the Awbury recreation center. The last place we went to take a survey was Martin Luther King high school

We met other volunteers. They weren't working for the committee. I believe that they were working on their own terms. Out of all the people we interviewed and met yesterday the volunteers that at the awbury recreation center. The volunteers were elderly and wise African Americans. One of them was an old black panther who was happy to see young black people working and volunteering for the committee. He talked about the things in his neighborhood changed and the racism with blacks voting and not being allowed to go into polling places. The other gentleman marched with Malcolm X in the 60s.

It was a pretty cool experience in all. The last location we went to was very boring. There wasn't many people coming out of the building.

This marking period we created an online store. In the store there is clothes, wooden product and jewelry. We plan on adding artwork but we need to ask people if they would like to sell the things they made.

1) Describe your project.
Our project for this quarter was to create a world using minecraft we created a medieval town with a village and main kingdom. I helped make the inside of the kingdom

2) What did you learn while completing this project?
That there is much more than just building house in minecraft. I learned the different things that would make a kingdom look more realistic and accurate to the time I also learned how to use more materials to make things.

3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

The hardest part of the project was getting minecraft to work

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The most fun I had was adding the people to the city to make it more alive

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

I would make a more modern world

  • I made this project so I can get better at making music. I also made it to get a better understanding of the program I was using.
  • I hoped to learn how to make different types of songs.
  • I learned how to correctly used the program and how to put the song together right.
  • I feel that I could of added more but I just couldn't figure out what I needed.

Abstract

The 81 year old Cleo Bell was interviewed by her great nephew Caleb Hughes. He asks her questions about the civil rights. She talks about the discrimination of schools and the work places. She also talks about the difference of living in tennessee and New York. She talks about self segregation. The self segregation is indirect.

Research

Segregation usually has to do with African Americans and other races during the jim crow era. It is mostly used with race. The schools were separated in the south as well as work. In the south they were still under jim crow laws. There was school separation in the north. It wasn’t as common as the south but there were elements of it.

CH: Hello

CB: Hello caleb How are you

CH: Good. Im going to ask you some more questions. We’re going to start over because of the messed up recording.

CB okay

CH When and why did you move to south

It was your uncle’s home and he came back home his brother had a contract business  and they wanted to work together down here

Ch Was there more racism in tennessee than new york

CB of course yes the south was segregated

CH New york was not segregated ?

CB  They could not the law was in the north could to turn everyone in the south it was segregated. Black people different places they were not allowed to be served at lunch counters and there was many things that were segregated were as in the north they could not do that because it was against the law. The law was against Those were the laws i the south back then it was illegal . You had  the civil rights movements

CH Do you remember anything that to do with the civil rights movements

CB Yes black people…. It was really against the law I mean why would you segregate because the color of your skin black people were segregated in the south and that was against the law because all men in the United states are created equal and thats not equal when you segregate people because of the color of their skin

CH How did you feel about the segregated

CB Dont remind me about it. because I pay taxes like all people white people and I was not allowed to have the same freedom of being able to go in a restaurant and go to the counter and be served but yet I payed taxes like everyone else so that was not good

CH Was there discrimination in schools in tennessee

CB Yes there was certain schools that white people went to and where black people went to they did not mix the races back then and a lot of times where it was inferior for black people…….

CH What about the work places

There was certain jobs that I that black were able to do the work they did not hire us and in schools black and white children  did not sit together or go to the same school certain schools for white children and black children went the races would not mix

And what about when you were a child was it still segregated in new york or was there no law yet

No I could go to any school i wanted to go to it was not like the south where the schools were seperated  in new york it was like neighborhoods mainly if a neighborhood were a lot black thats who (dont know what was said) But at the sametime it had to do with neighborhood its was a way of being discrimminated against it was against the law on the north

and I did go to school with white students The law was against you in the south where you could not mix were as in the north you could go in the stores and buy things I remember in the southwhen I camedown here I could go in to the store and I couldn’t try the dresses because you couldn’t do that I couldn’t sit at a lunch counter and in the resturants There was certain sections that was just for black people where you eat in the back and some places you could not sit down

CH

I choose it because I thought it be really cool to see a hat light up. It has 5 bulbs. Three bulbs in series on one branch and two in parallel that are in series. they are all very dim due to them all being in series with only two branches.
