Holden Balcer Capstone

Posted by Holden Balcer in Senior Capstone · Burrows-Stone · e1 on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 11:11 pm

For my capstone project, I’ve decided to make letters to the freshman of next year in a welcome way and give them resources to inform them about mental health. I think providing first-year students with access to websites with strategies to get on top of school work and to stay healthy. Health is affected by sleep and food choices like stressing the importance of breakfast. The kind of health which is overlooked by many, especially students. Having somewhat of a jump start to better habits is very important to me. I want to make people feel welcomed and enforce healthy strategies for their health physically and mentally. Originally I wanted to make care packages to inform people about mental health to anyone. Making those care packages though was a lot more time-consuming but especially more expensive. I got the idea from my advisor to switch to making a letter. Inside the letters, I would have QR codes to a website that holds the information! Instead of just having a website I thought receiving custom letters with unique art and stickers in them would be a lot more fun and incentivize to check out the website. After I got the final draft down the actual process of making the letters was thankfully straightforward. I made 22 for Mr. Cunha’s advisory next year. As I got a gift when I came to SLAB I think this would count as bringing things full circle in a way. It came out great.

PSA VIDEO

Posted by Holden Balcer in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · D on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11:42 pm

Our video went over extreme heat problems in suburban areas and how that affects the community. I thought this topic was good as it isn’t one that gets as much attention in the world of environmental justice and sometimes people forget why it happens other than just climate change. We talked about mostly how things could get better if we take better care of our vegetation and plant trees in these environments. I think we could have had a more consistent filming session and better timing on that so editing could be more concise for sure. I think the best part about making the PSA is the sense of accomplishment for sure. Even though there were some bumps along the way I’m pretty impressed with what I could conjure given the circumstances of me having to be sick.

Holden: Kenya Water Crisis

Posted by Holden Balcer in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · E on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 8:56 pm

After researching the global crisis Kenya has faced my stance on global water crisis’ relationship with environmental justice has been reaffirmed. Water is an absolute necessity that is required to live. We as humans have the power to solve these water crises. I fully believe that the only reason why we don’t is that people don’t want to invest so much time effort and money into these things instead of their own societies. There are many instances of us in fact actually adding or creating these water crises for profit on numerous occasions. I have hope however and learning about how the people in Kenya work to overcome their situation lets me know there aren’t situations like this unfixable.
