Public Issues PSA: Heart Disease

Posted by Jordan Lewis in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · E on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:25 pm
This video brings awareness to one of the most common public health issues which is heart disease. It aims to highlight how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle in order to decrease your chances of receiving one.  The video also reaches out to those who may currently have or have had heart diseases or disorders in their past.  We encourage those to speak up and bring awareness to the severity of heart issues.  However, we also aim to give them hope and courage knowing how many resources and organizations are out there fighting for their well being.  There are many organizations that help provide resources and care to those suffering from heart disease.  We encourage those suffering to never lose hope because there are people fighting for your greater cause.
Just like my group members, I contributed multiple factors to this project.  I helped work on every one of the checkpoints and was one of the main editors and producers of this video. I also provided most of the script for the video.  We did well on collaborating for the checkpoints to make sure they were completed, however, we should have been more proactive when thinking about the fact that certain group members wouldn’t be present during some of the project work days.  The most meaningful part of creating the PSA was the learning process because it was a great experience to find out about how much support there is in the world for those who are struggling with certain issues.

Jordan Lewis Capstone

Posted by Jordan Lewis in Senior Capstone · Turoff · ILP/TFI/CAP on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:21 am

Back in the 8th grade, I had a specific pair of nubuck sneakers that was my favorite which I did everything to keep clean. One day I had worn them to gym class and they ended up with scuffs, dirt patches, and random marks.  This made me take the sneakers home and use basic materials to attempt to clean them. When my family saw the results, they started to ask me to clean their sneakers as well. Kick’s Rebirth™ is the product of a sneaker cleaning hobby of mine that began after cleaning that one pair of sneakers in the 8th grade.

I chose to make this my senior capstone because this is something that I have a large interest in that also benefits others. Not everyone pays notices how many people walk around with dirty shoes wishing they were in better condition. Especially those apart of the sneaker head population. Kick’s Rebirth™ helps those who don’t have time to clean their shoes themselves and saves money for those who end up buying new shoes due to the old ones being dirty.  However, the idea of Kick’s Rebirth won’t just stop at sneaker cleaning. It will soon include sneaker customization, therefore this is a project that you may wish to stay tuned to!

This was a group project where the group got to choose any Spanish-speaking country and create a travel guide which planned a full traveling trip for two people. The project included 3 portions. A brochure, a presentation, and a commercial that all had to be apart of the travel guide. The guide had to include a 5, 7, and 9 day package and one of the packages had to be explained in detail so the traveler could know what activities are available while on the trip.
I feel like this project was an easy project as long as you have communication and cooperation within the group which is what my group didn't really have. We produced only a fair product and our grade reflected what we turned in. I also didn't take charge in the group like I should have and my grade also reflected that.

¿Mi corazón se hay dormido?

¿Mi corazón se hay dormido?

Colmenares de mis sueños,

¿ya no labráis? ¿Está seca

la noria del pensamiento,

los cangilones vacíos,

girando, de sombra llenos?

No, mi corazón no duerme.

Yo soy abierto.

Yo no soy liberado ahora

For this project, the students were required to choose a spanish poet that they would research. After choosing, they had to find information about the achievements throughout their lives and what influenced their poems. We then had to choose one of their poems and analyze the main ideas. Based off the themes and main ideas we chose, we had to write our own poem with the same theme all in spanish. I found this project to be pretty easy at first but it turned out to be a bit more work than i expected. I felt like I would have produced a better product if I used EVERY bit of time that was given to me.

Wesley:

Gracias Aaliyah y Haniah.

Ahora a Aaliyah.

Jordan:

This project was a group project with six group members. The members had to come together and create a news report as similar to a regular news broadcast as possible. The report had to be in full Spanish and had to include the segments weather, breaking news, fashion, and health. Two anchors were also required for this project.
The process of making this project was a fun process because not only did the project let you use creativity, but it allowed you to express your own personality within the video. My group did have a few setbacks though. In addition to the snow days that took away from our project time, there were periods where there was too much arguing or someone struggled to find required information, but in the end, we all came together and produced a great product.

Día de los Muertos

Día De Las Muertos

                                                                     FotoFlexer_Photo2.jpg

The person I decided to focus on for this project was my older sister Jasmine Lewis.  She was the second oldest out of my 5 siblings and honestly one of the most fun.  Jasmine was the one I went to when I needed someone to talk to but didn’t really feel like anyone else would have the answers to what I needed help with.  No matter what the situation was she would be there to help me out in it whether I was at fault or not.  She was a full supporter.  Unfortunately Jasmine was one of my sisters that had sickle cell.  The trait of this disease runs through my family but not everyone was born with it.  However, her case of sickle cell grew more severe as she went on with life.  The older she got the more she ended up in the hospital due to pains from this disease.  She always wanted to treat someone just because of the simple fact that she enjoyed making people happy.  She has passed away on March 29, 2014 before her 27th birthday and it was one of the largest wake up calls that my family could have received because no one was expecting it and it seemed like we almost took our moments with her for granted.  She was always a giver and would rarely expect something in return.

Jasmine meant a lot to me as do all of my older siblings.  We seemed to have this connection of some sort where she would always understand my point of view or where my reasoning was coming from.  She was also a very positive person almost all the time.  She did have her moments where she may not have been the most positive if she was made angry but that’s just human.  Jasmine was a huge source of knowledge for me.  Whenever there was a time where I felt like almost everyone was against me in a situation, she was always there by my side.  I always tried my hardest to do the  same for her as often as I could.  Jasmine and I were a team.  I had most of my first time experiences with her such as visiting Penn's Landing, going to Love Park downtown, and visiting the Philadelphia art museum.  She was a curious explorer when it came to certain things.  If she heard about a place that she thought one of her siblings would like, she would eventually arrange plans to visit that place with them or even the rest of the family.  She sometimes even was a connector for our family.  There would be times where she would bring us back together if we had not spent time with each other in a while.  For example there would be times where Jasmine would visit and encourage us to come together and eat dinner as a family to catch up on times that we missed and just to spend quality time with each other.

I honestly decided to create my sugar skull and mask in remembrance of her because she’s the closest family member that I have lost.  She is on my mind almost every day and I know everyone misses her dearly and they are holding in a lot of emotions so I felt that it would be good to express some of those emotions in this skull and mask portion of the project.  I felt that she was the most necessary to base this project on because she was a huge part of me and she was one of my largest sources of joy and happiness.  I believe she was that way for just about everyone in the family.  She spoke nothing but positive words and honored almost everyone she knew dead or alive so I felt that it was a great idea to honor her in this project.

In this project, my sugar skulls was painted a greenish blue.  This greenish blue represents one of her favorite colors besides pink.  This blue is painted on most of the skull because of that.  There is also a red trip down the back of the head.  This represents the hairstyle that Jasmine had which was a mohawk that was straightened and leaned toward the side that was dyed red.  If you look at the front of the skull you’ll notice that mouth area of the skull is a different color from the rest.  I decided to paint this part yellow because Jasmine was almost always speaking positive words.  The yellow is supposed to point out that her words were always either bright and encouraging or brought some sort of happiness. There are also yellow highlights on the outline of the mohawk to represent the bright parts of her mindset and the way she thought about things in a positive way.  The red strip borderlining the bottom of the skull is there to represent her strength from being able to deal with the pains of sickle cell almost all day, everyday and yet still remaining a positive person overall.  There are also simple red designs on the side of the skull that represent the red glasses she had but the eye part is sparkling and defined.  This represents the amazing way that she looked at different things and situations in life.

My mask for this project is also a reflection of my sister’s characteristics and tendencies.  The blue highlights that go throughout the mask design are to represent her favorite color once again.  I was sure to put the blue highlights in more than one place in the mask and also make it stand out in contrast with the red background.  There are 2 bright blue stars on the design of the forehead of the mask that represent how she found a way to see things the positive way and how she liked to explore.  The stars represent exploration because there are many stars and there is so much to explore in the universe.  The reddish pink color of the background of the mask represents how bright of a person she was overall because even though she dealt with a severe illness, she always managed to bring joy and stay bright.  The overall colors of the mask are meant to represent her bright the positive characteristics that Jasmine seemed to have almost all of the time.

The Day of the Dead has opened my mind up to the positive idea of the celebrating the passing of loved ones.  Usually I would only think of death as a bad thing and I would really hate it if a family member passed away but the Day of the dead has opened my eyes and has encouraged me to think of the positive that could be in the situation.  There are benefits especially for my sister such as the fact that now that she has passed away, she no longer has to deal with any pain or hurt that may have been caused by the sickle cell she had.  She also does not have to deal with any drama or tragedies caused by humans in general.  I know that my sister Jasmine Lewis has moved on to a better place and I and actually very glad that she did.  I am still sad and angry to have lost her in the first place but I am now able to remind myself of the positive fact that she no longer has to suffer at all anymore.  She has moved on into a better place and I am able to use that as another source of joy.

Panegírico

Hola, me llamo Jordan Lewis. For this project, we took a small part in a spanish holiday Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. We chose a person or loved one who was special to us that is no longer living and we created sugar skulls and skull masks in order to honor them. We also wrote reflections about the person and why they were special to us. For my project, I decided to honor my older sister. I wrote a brief summary about her and how special she was to me and the themes for my 2 skulls in the project were her favorite colors. I was sure to design skulls that she would like if she saw. I feel like getting the chance to honor my sister was a great project.

Humans of SLA Beeber: Asmar

Posted by Jordan Lewis in ENGLISH 1 - Zeller - X on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 12:25 pm

FullSizeRender.jpg

Q1: What is your family life like?

Asmar B: Well basically, my family life is normal. I see my family every week. We see each other, have fun, mainly the normal life of a family. We have drama but it’s not too dramatic.

Q2: What makes you happy?

Asmar B: What makes me happy is actually other people being happy because I cant stand to see somebody sad. That makes me feel bad as a person. If I see somebody sad, it makes me want to help them and make sure that they are happy because if they’re happy, I’m happy.

Q3: What inspired you to go to SLA and why?

Asmar B: Basically the science. I loved science when my new school opened up science to me. Now I want to explore science as a career and as a profession.

Q4: What were your previous academic experiences like?

Asmar B: It was rough. I had many tests that i weren’t really prepared for but I did manage to pass some.

Q5: What are your expectations for your personal future?

Asmar B: I want to be successful. I want to have enough money to provide for me, my family, and everyone that I love.

Q6: Does your personal life affect your academic life?

Asmar B: 100% because this school is very social, and most of my social life is in this school. So anything that happens in this school will happen in this school and outside of school.

Q7: Would you say that that is a positive or negative thing?

Asmar B: It depends on the situation. If it is a positive situation that happens in school then it’ll be looked at as a positive thing but if there is a negative situation then it will be looked at as a negative thing.

Tips for Teenagers- by Jade H, Jordan L, Tronta P, Asmar B, and Robert J.

Posted by Jordan Lewis in ENGLISH 1 - Zeller - X on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 11:39 am

Based on the I-Search papers that we completed on teenage development, here are some tips for teenagers to help them be happier and to help them develop in positive ways.

  1. Peer pressure happens to anyone and you should know that you’re not alone in that situation if you just speak up they will listen to you.

  2. Don’t let your social status and level of popularity stress you out, but simply take note of what things you have to do to gain respect. Respect gains a higher social status.

  3. Teenagers need responsibilities at home to have structure outside of home such as school and public places.

4. Teenagers should communicate to their parents about the changes to their body to help them to understand them more.

5. Social media can cause a wide spread of problems when it comes to teenage growth.

I chose to do this infograhpic because I have a great interest in football and I wanted to make this project reflect that. This infograhpic is to help the football fans out there know what players are in the top ranks when it comes to football regarding the QBR in their best games and their overall total QBR. This infographic will help inform people of the best players in the league from the year of 2014

Walk Away

Posted by Jordan Lewis in TECH 1 - Hertz - a2 on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 1:34 pm
"Just Walk Away"
I chose these words to highlight how easy it is to avoid cyber bullying. People tend to suffer from cyber bullying for long periods of time when it really isn't that hard to close it out and walk away. They could simply close the program or shut the laptop because there is a large variety of things to do other than be on social media. This picture symbolizes the phrase because in the picture the man has his back turned and is walking away. This is what I think people should do because it is a very simple way to avoid the extra stress that cyber bullying adds on to peoples lives. Also because I think it's better to spend time with family or friends in person rather than sit on social media.
