Enviromental Science PSA-Food insecurity

Posted by Shahaad Jones on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 12:09 am

Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form. What did you do well and what could you have done differently? What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA?

To summarize my groups PSa video, it follows a main character from a first person pov. Who due to the low income, food insecure neighborhood he lives in. Has contracted a fictional form of diabetes and now must navigate the next 7 days only eating healthy foods.

I think one thing that was done super well is the creativity. Our video is funny but super layered and has a powerful message behind it.

One thing I could’ve done better though is further flesh out my solutions. I feel that though this is layered comedy the comedy does take up a lot of attention from what could’ve been going to me discussing more solutions for this problem.

The most meaningful part was definitely writing the script. I love being able to highlight creativity and have such free range.

Shahaad And Kennedy Sustainability Project

Posted by Shahaad Jones in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 11:50 pm

My group founded eco-care innovations. A healthcare corporation that prioritizes waste management as much as they do the well being of everyone that comes in and out of our doors.

We as people see biodiversity in such high value because it supports our environments (plants, animals, air), which directly impacts our way of life/lifespan. Certain human actions effect this such as water pollution as plastics not only kill animals but full habitats due to It being so hard to breakdown. As a result of certain animals /ecosystems dying, certain animals that rely on both as a food source are then forced to die off or eat their own species, which effects their own species in the long run. This lowers biodiversity because it shortens the variety of life due to killing off species. Individuals can live more sustainably by each analyzing individual eco foot print. An eco footprint is basically bread crumbs of how your actions effect the environment around you. For instance I could have a negative eco footprint if I’m driving an older model car to work everyday, that’s because the fossil fuels produce co2 in the environment which in turn leads to global warming. So just being aware and willing to change is enough. This project deepened my understanding by showing me how many forms of sustainability there could be. There were so many creative ways people chose to improve on an existing industry in a healthy way, it was baffling. The info that surprised me most about my industry is just how much wast is mismanaged per year. It’s crazy because it just shows how something so simple could be that harmful to our environment. Kennedy contributions: I made the model, going shopping and coming home to make my arts in craft project out of my shoebox Shahaad: I made the slides, with help from Kennedy researched and sorted all of my stats to create them all.

Shahaad- Natural Disasters

Posted by Shahaad Jones in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 11:21 pm

They all affect each other by interconnecting. For instance the atmosphere influences the hydrosphere by having changes in temperatures that directly influences the hydrological cycle ie; an atmospheric change such as heat could result in evaporation after rain. The Geosphere helps affect the biosphere as from it living organisms get minerals for everyday things such as coal to power things. The hydrosphere and geosphere connect because bodies of water could have an huge impact on land such as glaciers, lakes, oceans while in turn the geosphere shapes coastlines which can affect where bodies of water are placed and how they flow. The biosphere and atmosphere interconnect because living organisms depend on the atmosphere for not only weather but gasses such as oxygen. In turn things like photosynthesis benefit the atmosphere because it regulates gases such as carbon dioxide.

I think understanding environmental science will help aid in handling/ preventing natural disasters because it will provide more insight into how these systems work. With more insight comes a level of understanding that is crucial when it comes to aiding because you can find ways to navigate those earth system(s) to prevent natural disasters. An example of this is studying seismic activity that focuses on monitoring tectonic plates, from this it can be seen what places/regions are at more risk of experiencing something like an earthquake, which would in turn help give time to prepare by the way infrastructure in that region is developed, evacuation steps and trends to predict the next time one could occur.

My overall reaction was surprise. Usually when I hear about a disaster such as a tornado I don’t think beyond a base level understanding. Researching about it for this project though I never knew how complex they could be, so much so to the point where if winds are strong enough events like twin tornadoes could occur which I had no knowledge of before this project.
