Air Pollution PSA

Posted by Nuria Reichert in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 1:29 pm

My PSA outlines different contaminants, their effects on human and animal life, and their environmental impacts. I wanted to capture two perspectives by showcasing “The Two Sides of Philly”: The green side and highly polluted side. My PSA was specifically directed towards the city and large companies to emphasise the majority of responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions they hold, despite the blame often being pushed onto individuals. With this PSA I aimed to educate individuals on dangerous outdoor and indoor pollution, without making them feel like a future of sustainability is their responsibility ALONE. “In addition to marketing the idea of an individual ‘carbon footprint’, companies should audit their process to identify environmentally harmful operations, and then work to replace them.”

Though I am happy with the perspectives I was able to capture, I wish I had captured the polluted side of Philly better. This could have looked like more images of factories, trash, and neighborhoods.

The most meaningful part of this experience, for me, was being able to analyze an area in which I have spent my whole life exploring. I have had access to both the green areas, and polluted areas of Philly all my life, and this project has introduced me to an entirely new perspective on pollution here. I am more motivated than ever to advocate for families and individuals living in parts of Philly where air quality is much less than adequate.

Environmental Mini PSA

Posted by Tykira Booker in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 12:46 pm

  1. The film gives a thorough explanation of mold, covering its causes, ways to prevent it, and where it comes from. It explores the several elements that lead to the growth of mold, including moisture, humidity, and inadequate ventilation, and provides helpful advice on how to reduce these risks in order to stop the spread of mold in homes and other places. The health effects of mold exposure are also covered, as is the significance of taking quick action to resolve any mold-related problems. We selected this subject because mold growth is a prevalent issue that can have serious repercussions for both maintaining one’s own health and property. Our goal is to enable viewers to protect their homes and foster a healthy indoor environment by providing tips and techniques for avoiding mold.
  2. In keeping with our objective of giving viewers useful insights, we successfully covered the key features of mold, such as its causes, prevention, and health implications. Nevertheless, the inclusion of particular instances or graphic aids might have improved comprehension and involvement. Overall, we did a good job of summarizing the subject, but we might have improved the information even further by including more specific instances and images.
  3. The most meaningful part of creating the PSA was knowing that the information we shared could potentially make a positive impact on people’s lives. Mold growth can have serious consequences for both property maintenance and personal health, so being able to provide practical tips for prevention felt rewarding. Knowing that our efforts could help viewers safeguard their living spaces and promote healthier indoor environments was truly gratifying.

Excessive Heat in Homes

Posted by Jahmirah Hightower in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 2:39 pm

In this PSA my group talked about excessive heating in homes. It forms when it a lot of sun beams on houses and there aren’t a lot of trees around houses. This is important because most of Philadelphia have excessive heat in their own homes and most houses don’t have central air in their houses. I picked this because I used to live in a house with excessive heating when I was younger, but I have been moved out of there.

I think my group could’ve made the video more entertaining and the information that we had we could’ve added it into the video. The meaningful things were explaining different ways to keep yourself cool.

Lead Exposure by Jamel

This PSA is about lead exposure and how harmful it is in many different communities. Lead exposure can cause many health problems and can affect people negatively. Lead dust is the most common way lead is exposed. We chose to talk about lead exposure because it isn’t t talked about and it is very important because of how serious and effective it can be. I feel like my group did very well with putting the information together and creating the PSA. Something I think we could’ve changed was our time management and the way we collaborated. The most meaningful part of creating this PSA was learning more about lead exposure and its causes

*Lead exposure* PSA by Jabriel

Posted by Jabriel Muttalib in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 1:19 am

I considered Lead exposure to be my topic at first because I already had some type of knowledge or understanding of what the topic would be about, and I found out that most of what I believed led exposure to be was true. Like how lead could be found in homes in Philly because of the use of paint that contained led and that was being applied to the walls. I also learned how much of a hazard lead exposure can be to our health. it can cause sicknesses and irritation and worst of all can be inhaled from dust particles and can be found at parks where children play.

When participating in the project I feel as though I contributed for the most part but I regret not asking my teacher if I can go help record so that I can apply my understanding of the topic.

The most meaningful part in my opinion was the video, because you were able to grasp a better understanding of how well my group understood what lead exposure is.

Lead Exposure PSA by Carly

Posted by Carly Smith in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 1:02 am

Our PSA focused on lead exposure. We focused on the effects, how bad it may be, how it is caused, and the many health issues it can cause. Lead dust is one of the main causes of lead exposure and is the most common way people are exposed to lead. Lead exposure can have many effects on the body and can cause many different health issues. Lead exposure is harmful to everyone but is mainly harmful to young children and women of childbearing age. We feel as though lead exposure is very important and should be talked about more so we chose to do a PSA on it.

I feel like we did well with putting the video together and coming up with the questions but we could have done better with managing our time more wisely.

I feel like the most meaningful part of this PSA and creating this PSA was being able to learn more about lead exposure itself and its causes and being able to collaborate with group members very well.

Lead Poisoning

Posted by George Gee in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 12:58 am

Our video is a short skit of us educating students on lead Poisoning and explaining the causes and effects. I chose to do lead poisoning for my topic because it isn’t something that I hear about often so I also wanted to educate myself. One thing I did well was work cohesively with my group. If I had to do anything different I’d use my time more wisely. The most meaningful part of my experience creating the PSA was learning to mesh ideas with others to have a good final product.

Water Contamination

Posted by Jayden Middlebrooks in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 12:05 am

The PSA discussed water contamination in Philadelphia, focusing on its effects on biotic factors, leading cause, and ways to make water safer. The main cause is stormwater drains, where toxins and trash enter, causing acidity and affecting marine life and human health. To address this issue, practices like water conservation, reducing plastic waste, throwing away trash, and walking can help. The PSA was meaningful for the author, as it highlighted the importance of reducing water contamination and engaging in activities for the future. The video was edited well, but there were some improvements, such as better audio recording and less loud background sound effects. The most minimal aspect of the creativeness was spending awareness on our community.

Food insecurity in Philly

Posted by Emma Westerfer in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:58 pm

In my groups PSA we talked about the definition, causes, who is affected, and solutions of how to fix it. Me and my group didn’t really consider choosing another option because we all like this one. personally when I was choosing a topic I felt like I was so blind to the food insecurity issues going on because I have never had to deal with it personally, so I wanted to learn more about it. I felt that especially living in the world and city we do it needs to be talked about more, because it’s a huge problem that could be deadly in some cases.

-Me and my group did well with working with each other and getting it done we had a lot of fun. We could have done better in creating a script and being more serious.

  • The most meaningful part of creating this was me and my group learning this together and being able to get it done and come out of it being less naive and blind to things.

water contamination

Posted by Amber Thompson in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:52 pm

I should talk about water pollution in Philadelphia because it can make people sick, harm nature, and damage the city’s systems. If we talk about it, we can work towards cleaner water and safer communities for everyone. I think I did pretty well with editing the video and adding a fix to it. I wish we could have got better audio recording and less Loud sound effects in the background but other than that I think the video turned out pretty fine. I think the most minimal part of creativeness was just the fact of spending awareness to our own community.
