Nejat Naser's Capstone
Hello!
For My capstone, I teamed up with fellow Abeer Al-Hayik students of SLA @ Beeber to create a mini course for the incoming new EM students. Through the mini-course, we aimed to create a space where newcomers are welcomed and supported. Being a newcomer is hard when you are in a magnet high school. This is why we believe it is important to show the newcomer that they have support around them.
The mini-course was held every Wednesday in room 212. We started the mini in early November with around 10 students. The mini-course was mostly tutoring. If students need help with their homework or classwork we do one on one help sections to better understand the work. If they do not have any work we focus on English learning. Since many of the new Em students weren’t fluent in English yet we tried our best to communicate with them using Google Translate.
Using the essential question I researched how to make newcomers feel more comfortable at school and what types of activities benefit them. Through research, I was able to find various ideas that will benefit our mini-course. From our research, we found ways to make our students feel comfortable and how to present activities to them. We also overcame the burden of communicating with them.
Overall, using the research and the activities we created for them has shown a lot of growth within their classwork and contribution to their classes in general.
