Earthquakes

Posted by Mariano Mattei in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:21 am

Working on this mini project, I learned a lot about Earth's systems, earthquakes, and how they interact with each other. Although I wasn't here to work with my group on the first day, I do think I ended up accomplishing a lot. I was able to help my group through the struggle of researching as well as help them put it all together. One thing I think I could have done better was to get more sources. We ended up with exactly four sources, but I feel like that is only meeting the expectation, and not going above and beyond. In doing this project, I was able to learn that Earth's systems interact with each other, and when one system changes, it affects the other systems as well. For example, if earthquakes occur (geosphere) underwater (hydrosphere), then seismic waves occur, water flow is faster/slower, and in extreme cases, tsunamis occur. As people study environmental science and gain a better understanding of natural disasters, we are able to know how to protect/prepare ourselves in case of an emergency, as well as maybe being able to prevent the natural disasters. Efforts we can make to create a sustainable future are to get better technology to analyze the Earth, finding out when a natural disaster will occur ahead of time so that we can properly prepare and not rush out. PSA on Lead Poisoning

Posted by Christopher Jones in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 6:48 pm

In my video, we cover a variety of topics; with our main point/issue being lead poisoning. Our topics range from environmental justice to lead poisoning to then looking at an environmentally just society. The idea of this benchmark was to research and talk about a natural disaster or something that happens in our environment that negatively affects it and makes it unjust. We chose lead poisoning because it stood out to us after reviewing it in class earlier in this year. After talking about this topic in class this year each member of my group and I still had remaining questions about lead poisoning and figured this would be the perfect time to investigate them.My role in the group was basically to find all the information about our topic and relay it to our script. Which I think I did a pretty good job on. Of course, there's always room for improvement but for this project, I think I would give myself based on the role I played an 8 out 10.One thing I did well just do my role but some things I could have done better include using my time more wisely while also stepping up and becoming a more vocal leader in my group. The most meaningful part for me during this PSA,  was just me gaining knowledge about a specific topic and then spreading to others.

Toxic City Philadelphia

Posted by Christopher Jones in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 8:44 pm

After both reading the Toxic city article and completing this infographic one that really surprised me is that I never heard of the high toxic levels or the lead poising concerns after living in Philadelphia for over 17 years. I was very shocked when I found this out and this just made me more aware and geared me to stay active on whats going on in my community.

Hurricane Sandy

Reflection 9/18/17:
For this project I found it pretty easy. The only part that was really hard or difficult was creating a info graphic. I put a lot of information into the doc.

Reflection 9/19/17: The information we got back was great for the next time we work on a project. We have to do better with time management and staying focus during class.  We have to learn to do our sources better and citing them besides those couple of mistakes people said our project was alright.

Natural Disaster and Earth System Research

Posted by Christopher Jones in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 9:24 pm

The Earth System is broken down into four different processes; those processes include the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere. Each process plays a huge role in the way the Earth operates but all essentially play a different role. When a natural disaster occurs its very likely that it will bounce between all four of these processes causing each system to be affected. When researching for this project I not only enjoyed learning about the earth system but learning about all the different natural disasters. After this project and now knowing what I know I feel as though its essential for everyone to know information about these topics to prepare and have knowledge for a natural disaster incase it ever occurs around them.

I had the intention that we were presenting our info-graphic to the class so me and my group intended on just elaborating on our information to the class during out presentation. If we knew we were doing our gallery work me and my group members would of included more information on our info-graphic.

Yellow Stone 1988 Wildfire

Posted by Charles Riggs in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 1:23 pm

https://magic.piktochart.com/output/24533193-yellow-stone-1988-wildfire I learned a lot from this mini project. I learned how natural disasters affect our environment and the damages it can cause to us. Wildfires can be common and are cause mainly by people. For example we can leave campfire unattended, cigarette butts on the land. The after affect can harm all life within the area and the air can be contaminated and hard to breathe in causing our bodies to get infected and die or cause serious life risks.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

Posted by Tyrone Hart in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 10:16 am

We'll be covering the different earth systems and how a change in one particular system can cause a natural disaster as devastating as hurricane Katrina.

Identification of Roles

Natural Disasters occur because of movements or changes within some of the Earth's systems. These systems include:

Biosphere ~ the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms.

Cryosphere ~ Is the frozen water part of the Earth system. Beaufort sea and North Alaska. The one part of Cryosphere is the ice that is found in the water which includes frozen parts of the ocean that surrounds Antarctica and the Arctic.

Hydrosphere ~ Hydrosphere is all of the waters on the Earth’s surface (Oceans, Lakes, etc.); including water above the surface, like in clouds. The connection Hydrosphere has with hurricanes, is the formation of them. Hurricanes start with storms over the

Atmosphere ~ The blanket of gas on the surface of a planet or satellite. The atmosphere of the Earth is about 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen. Natural disasters include tornadoes and severe storms.

Geo-sphere ~ Any of the almost spherical concentric regions of matter that make up the earth and its atmosphere, as the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Natural disasters include volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Reflection

The earth's systems affect each other in somewhat of a domino effect. I say this because for example, a natural disaster that forms in the Atmosphere or the Hydrosphere can have a major effect on the Geosphere, possibly creating enough to cause harm to living organisms in the Biosphere. An understanding of environmental science help in natural disasters because although we can’t stop natural disasters from occurring, we can prepare for them, especially with our advancements in meteorology and forecasting natural disasters such as hurricanes. The efforts we can make to create a better future is helping those are in need of it most, and understanding that if we all pitch in, we can make recovery easier.
