Social Media Survival Guide

1:  I think my identity online is not so vast that their is room for negative conspiracy or speculation. I am a student of acceptable means and just an average person who likes to use social media to express my thoughts or feelings.

2: The perception that people may have on me is based entirely on how they think and how much thought they put into my posts online. I think I just have an average identity, a person who is just trying to express their thoughts and feelings. I don’t think there's any negative association with what I post, because I try to be mindful.

3: I usually consider will people like this and will I like it. Is it safe and or appropriate and what do I want to express are among the thoughts I might think before posting online.

4:     The pros may be: Getting to get your message across, Informing people of an important message, Giving knowledge. Some cons could be, the possibility of provoking someone, slander, bullying etc…

5: If you put something online once it is there it could be there forever as you are not aware if someone could have taken it for themselves even after you have deleted it.  For lack of control if you were to take a selfie with someone and it was on their device, you have no control.

6: Personally I have mixed feelings about social media checks. We looked at a twitter account of a woman who wanted to be a lawyer. Some of the things that were mentioned could be seen as provocative to the job she was applying for. So it is open perception, the person who posts it could have one opinion but the person who is looking might have another. I would say yes and no, it depends on the explicit nature of the post and how obvious it is.

7:  Free Speech in my opinion is the right that anyone may say whatever they wish and it may entail whatever they want. But ironically free speech does not support all speech. Slander, Fighting words, bullying etc…. We technically have limited speech in the US, that is if you are not willing to take the consequences.

8: An internet troll is a person who usually posts things with intention to annoy or hurt a person or group of people. They subsequently hope for a response as that is what gives them joy. An internet troll usually possess traits like sadism or narcissism.

9: Internet trolls goals are to get people to respond to them and or annoy/hurt them. They usually like to respond to people and keep the argument going as it provides the trolls with satisfaction.

10: I don’t believe trolling can be stopped. There are ways to decrease the amount of trolls. One way is to just ignore them, or to put knowledge on them.

11: The pros are it keeps your identity safe, it also allows you to be able to keep your posts safe. The cons could be is of you are a troll, you could hurt others and get away with it, it could be constant because of the anonymity.

Three Tips

  • Be extremely aware, try to think before you post!

  • Make sure you have an explanation to why you have posted something

  • Follow all protocols and rules for you and others safety.

Daniel Baez online identity

Posted by Daniel Baez in TECH 1 - Hertz - e2 on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 7:23 pm

I don't really think I'm a somebody when I'm online but at the same time I'm a somebody when I'm online. I don't really get online as much that's why I think I'm a nobody online but I do use certain apps that deal with my identity online. But when I'm online I watch what I do cause I don't want to do anything that I will regret the next day, because that's how it always is. I don't appear online as much a teen that is obsessed with Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. I like staying more low key. I think that people won't really be able to perceive me because since I don't really have an identity online people aren't able to perceive me, as they would usually perceive someone who's updating things online ll the time. What I consider before posting online is who will see my post; Who would take a screenshot to forward the upload, and how will people few my post. The pros of sharing online is that is way faster, and you don't have to wait 3 days to send a mail and receive one back. It would be an instant thing. But the cons about sharing online are that ones you have posted something online that permanent that that post of thing will stay up online. You're not safe with online. For ex you can post a picture of yourself that looked off the hook but then you realized that you didn't want everybody to see and you take it down someone already took a screenshot and have it on their phones. Lack of control, Permanence, Immediacy have an impact in our life because anything can go wrong in just a second. I think that media background checks should be done because you want to see a preview of the person's life of who you are going to hire to work for you btu at the same time I think that is something that shouldn't be done because what if that's the person's personal page like the person might be different at work and out of work. I personally think that the person should act the same way he acts when his working when he is out of work. Free speech  is when a person is able to say what he or she is thinking freely but some people take an advantage of that and use free speech in a negative way to bully people and be hurtful. The things that are protected are the things you chose to be private but otherwise nothing is protected at a high way. An internet troll is when someone bothers someone just for the fun of it but also they do it to start arguments, post bad things to offend you. Say of topic things negatively, etc. The goals of internet troll is to upset the other person to a point where they want to do something stupid or to embarrass them. We can stop trolling by going to court and speaking about the way people use internet to troll people to a point where they might want to d something horrible. The pros of posting anonymously is that people won't know where and who the posting came from from so your identity online won't get messed up. The cons of posting anonymously is that there's no point of posting because you aren't going to get as much like because people won't know where the post is coming from and fro who.
Don't do anything that you'll regret the next day.
Think before you act upon your post.
And be sure that you want to post before you post.

Social Media Survival Guide

Alexander Delgado

When i am online people mostly perceive me as a gamer or someone who likes to watch internet videos and stuff, it is true, but what they do not know is that i also watch the news, i find internet posts and comments and also do a lot of other fun stuff when i am in the internet. It is a huge other world, separated from reality where unlike the real world, anything is possible. You can say i am most likely a poster or commenter, that is what people would say in the internet right?, but in reality everyone is almost the same, they post, they comment, they argue, they solve, but there are some people who are not cautious of what they post, and that it can be a huge impact on the people who get affected by it in any way. Before posting or commenting or doing anything in the internet, you must remind yourself that everyone in the world is gonna watch you, and that anything you say can affect someone else positively or negatively (always remember that). You should also consider what will happen if you lost control over a post you did, or a blog. People might wanna use it against you, or for their own benefit. You can lose control over anything you do on the internet in matter of seconds, heck, at the same time you post something it is in danger, you must always be cautious. Personally i think that when you go to a job that requires you to have social media background checks, i would say OK, but i am still concerned because they will be looking through my stuff and what would happen if some of my stuff gets exposed or even worse, people make lies about my own personal stuff? ( What do you think). This next theme is a common misconception on the internet, freedom of speech. Some people think that because they have the right of freedom of speech they can say whatever they want, that is totally wrong. The freedom of speech right says:” the right to communicate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship, but sometimes including any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.” Not to offend or harass people because of the likes of someone ( it has it’s limits). Another theme that needs to be talked about is Online Trolling, it can be funny but it can also bother a lot of people. Internet Trolls are people that start arguments trying to upset people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community. Now there is a way of stopping Trolls, simply just ignore them, that is all it takes. Anonymous posting, the act of posting something without a trace, data, and/or personal information. Anonymous posting has its own benefits like, being able to post something without being noticed, not having to worry about people trolling or harassing you due to your post, and basically not be noticed. Some cons of this is that people might blame other people because of not knowing who posted, due to not knowing who made the post, and the “severity” of the post it can make a big fuzz around the internet and even reach the world.    So if possible, post good and meaningful stuff online, not just any random/ harmful comment, be polite, be honest and express your feelings without hurting anybody. Thank you.
