One Point Perspective Room
Now, standing in her Missouri kitchen, she gazes at the plant that she grew from seeds smuggled onto the plane in her wallet, the candle, a gift from a fellow student before she left, that she only lights on special occasions, and the sign she splurged on the day before she left. "C'est la vie," she sighs.
Before washing her hands to make dinner, she gazes fondly at the last bar of French soap on the dish next to the sink. "Tonight, I'll make a croque madame for dinner," she thinks.

SLA Beeber Student Wins Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Moot Court Competition
"The competition is the culmination of the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which engages pupils from urban high schools and allows law students to serve as mentors who teach the teens about the power of the U.S. Constitution and its relevance in their lives.
Law students teach lessons on the legal system and the constitution at Philadelphia high schools and then groom interested teens for moot court competitions.
The local competition was judged by Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge John Milton Younge, a nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Marlene Lachman and Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Michael Fanning.
The winners.....will travel to Washington, D.C. with their mentors for the national competition on April 8."

SLA Boy's Soccer End of Year Update
The SLA Boys Soccer team finished their season with a strong 8-3 record. With great leadership from Max Amar-Olkus and William Derry, the team came together to establish themselves as a strong soccer program that improved throughout the season. The team finished second in the Public League C-Division, posting an 8-1 record in league play.
A special thank you to all players and parents who showed their hard work and dedication all season with their commitment to practice and support at our games!

Seeing Ourselves/Seeing the City: An Expedition into 9th Grade
At the Science Leadership Academy, we understand that the transition into High School can be a difficult one. We are pleased to offer a one-week Summer Institute this August, to ease that transition and allow our students and faculty to begin forging bonds together as a learning community – before the “hard work” of the classroom begins.
Led by faculty and upper-class students, this one-week orientation will have two goals, the first is to begin the process of bringing them into the unique, diverse SLA community. To that end, students will spend part of the time in their Advisory Groups, getting to know the students and teachers that will be a part of their community from their first day at SLA through graduation and beyond.
Second, the week will be built around our philosophy of student-driven, hands-on, project-based learning. We want to introduce our students to SLA’s core values of Inquiry, Research, Collaboration,Presentation, and Reflection from the start, and get them acclimated to the high expectations we have for their high school careers. Using The Franklin Institute and other Philadelphia sites as their “classroom,” students will begin working to explore a variety of questions and problems relating to their surroundings and their place within it. Our students will practice the art of “seeing in new ways” as it relates to the process of observation, analysis, and interpretation.
During Summer Institute, students will work to ultimately create a collaborative project to present to their classmates, while, at the same time, establishing positive relationships and a sense of themselves as first-year SLA students. It will be an exciting, enriching, and energizing way to gear up for the year.
See you in August!
P.S. If you have any general questions about the school year, please refer to our Family Night Packet.

Family Appreciation
The Office of Family and Community Engagement has planned several events to take place in October in honor of Family Appreciation Month. This annual celebration allows the School District of Philadelphia to express its appreciation for all that families do in support of their child’s education and our schools. Studies have proven that when families are involved with their child’s education, students perform better in their classes and are more likely to graduate. An event calendar for Family Appreciation Month can be accessed at http://www.philasd.org/announcements/2013-family- . Please share this information with students and parents at your school and encourage them to register as soon as possible.appreciation-month.pdf
