Reflection
The video my group did was on the textile industry. We chose this because it is something a lot of people don’t talk about, and we were interested to learn more information about it. The textile industry is something that is involved in our everyday lives and I did not realize how much it affected our environment.
For the project we did it in the form of a talk show. I helped write a lot of the script, research information, and helped film the video. I think we did a good job filming and finding out good information on the topic. Something I would of done differently is not let anyone else in the room while we are filming as it was very distracting.
The most meaningful part of this to me was being able to create a video sharing a good message with my friends. It taught me more about using the cameras and I learned a lot about a topic I did not even realize was a problem before.

For my project this quarter, I did a still life drawing. The two items I drew were grapes and seashell behind it. I really tried to focus on the texture of the grapes and capture that in my drawing. Something I want to communicate through my piece is the detail in the work. It is something I am proud of.
When I was working on the rough draft of the picture, I just used a number 2 pencil to sketch it out. When I wanted to do the shading I used a pencil with a different type of graphite. They made shading the grapes much easier. They were a softer touch and easy to draw the lighting of the grapes. This work relates to work I have done in the past because I have done still life in the past. It was similar techniques I had to do to capture the look of the object.
Our first nt was to sketch a rough draft in our notebook. After working on that one we had to make another one before starting the final product. The first rough draft I made did not get finished. I only got half of the grapes shaded in. The second one I was able to finish the whole thing. The leaves and the grapes all got shaded in.
An artist who makes similar work to this is Willem Kalf. A lot of his paintings were still lifes of fruit. His are all paintings and mine is not, but they have very similar shadings.
http://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/still_life/willem_kalf.htm
When I was coloring in the grapes, I started coloring in the circle really dark, and continued to get lighter and lighter till the tip of the grape. I wanted to get the light bouncing off the grape, and I think that captured the look.
It took me a few times to get the leaves of the grapes down. In order to capture the lines in the leaves, I had to color in the leaves and stop coloring where the lines would be. That is what gave it more of a realistic feel. Something I am proud of how the shading on the grapes turned out. I think the shading makes them look realistic.
If I could change one thing about this project, I would want to start the second object earlier. I forgot that we had to use two objects, so I only did the second object on the last draft.
Something I learned during this project is multiple drafts is an important part to drawings. Even if you like the first of your drawing, you should do a new one to your skills and see if something comes out better. You can always go back to the first drawing, but if you don't make new ones you have no chance to improve.

For the quarter 1 project, we had to draw a self portrait of anyone and have it convey an important message to you. I drew a picture of me back when I was on treatment for Leukemia. This picture is of me getting chemotherapy but instead of chemo, I drew in all the emotions and things I was feeling during my experience. During treatment I felt a lot of different things. My emotions were all over. I was sad a lot of the time, sometimes happy, tired, grateful, I tried to convey this in the picture.
The picture is me bald. I have a port in my chest which I used when I got chemo. There is a bag of chemo going through me. I specifically made the chemo in the backround yellow because that was the color of one of the chemos that made me feel most sick. My goal was to make my skin color look on more of the pale side being I was sick. I drew makeup on myself because it was one of the things I got into when I was sick to help me feel more pretty. The things I drew in my chemo bag were the emotions I was feeling.
I drew the litle explosion spark to express me going crazy. I drew the skull to represent feeling so “dead” and out of it. I drew the heart because I was grateful for the expirience and meeting the people I met. It shaped me into the person I am today. I drew the “zzz” to represent how tired I was physically and emotionally. I drew the first pump to represent me as a fighter. The shot and pill bottle was to represent treatment. The upside down over represents me being over with it. The happy and sad face represented my moods changing often about things. And lastly the survivor ribbon represents me being a survivor.
The tools I used to make this picture was a pencil and colored pencils. I chose colored pencils because I wanted the final product to have a light easy to look at appeal, not too many bright colors to distract from the point of the drawing.
My current works relates to my previous work because of the style and materials I used. Colored pencils is a material I usually use and this is a style of drawing I have done before when it comes to drawing people. Something I might use next time is oil pastel because I have not used them in a while and it would be nice to try again.
These are the steps I took for creating this piece. I brainstormed some different ways to convey the message. I looked up some up pictures of myself to base my drawing off. looked at each picture and drew what I saw (I looked at pictures of chemo bags, ports, shots, etc.) After that I got colored pencils and colored in the picture. I got it critiqued from Ms Hertz and fixed the background which was her one piece of advice.
I had a picture inspire me for my work. I saw a beautiful picture of a girl who was bald which inspired the style I drew my picture in. I tried to get all the details on her face but make them look similar to mine. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1CADEAA_enUS761US761&biw=1366&bih=702&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=bald+girls+tumblrwith+makeup&oq=bald+girls+tumblrwith+makeup&gs_l=psy-ab.3...13707.14542.0.14627.6.6.0.0.0.0.123.529.1j4.5.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..2.1.121...0i13i30k1.0.yXmEWb2EUEM#imgrc=vzlmV8eeRh9Z7M: (link to the picture).
A certain technique to the picture that is important is the light pencil marks. I tried to make it light and simple to not take away from the message of the drawing. Personally when I was making this I did not learn a lot of new techniques. Art is something I have done a lot before so this was nothing new to me.
The thing I am most proud of in this piece is the girl I drew representing me. I think I drew her well with good detail to tell what it is. Also proud of the things I drew to represent my emotions during treatment.
Personally I don’t think there is anything I would change about the project. If I did it again I would maybe try a different material to try something new, but I really like how it turned out. Something I would try next time is new materials and to do someone other than myself.
Something I learned from this is how to convey a message through a self portrait. I have drawn a self portrait before but never tried to convey a message through it. I got to explore different ways to show a message by looking at the examples and doing some brainstorming.
Tsunamis
In the past week I learned a lot. Earth science is something that I did not know a lot about. I learned about the definition of the different “spheres”. Geosphere (lands and rocks) , hydrosphere(water, lakes, oceans), atmosphere (air), cryopshere (frozen water on earth), biosphere (life on earth). I learned about how they contribute to the earth. The natural disaster we chose were tsunmamis. You don’t hear about tsunamis as much as hurricans, tornadoes, etc. We wanted to learn more about them. I learned some things like how they are caused and what to do to prevent them.

Aliya's Media and Design Project
Q1 project - My overall vision of my project was to make a site to inform people about me. My overall vision of my project was to have pictures to show off who I am and that went along with the pictures. I feel the website was successful. I think I had good pictures to represent what I had to say.
Q2 project - Image editing. For my quarter two project I took a picture I drew and changed it around. I wanted to make the pictures pop more than it did before to have a cooler effect when your looking at it. If I had to change it I think I would be more organized with making it. I had another idea before but changed it as I was struggling with it. I would ask for more help this time.
Q3 project - 3D modeling. I used to use it at my old school and wanted to try it again. I made insects out of it and wa going to print it out and give it to my sister as a gift. If I had a chance to do this again I would do a much more detailed thing as I like exploring new forms of art. I was not working to my potential I feel, but it was fun to make.
Revised projects
For my website I felt like nothing needed to be edited. I feel like everything that I wanted to add got put into the project.
For image editing I did not add any revisions. In the future I would choose a different picture to edit and make it more unique to myself.
For 3D modeling I did revise the project. I felt like I didn’t add enough so I added more to the design. I added her name, and a few more bugs to the image.
My high point of this course
My highpoint of this course was learning new techniques and skills I did not know about before. Before the class I did not know about making my own website and I have never tried image editing. The one thing I have done before is use tinkercad for 3D modeling, I did the project again because it has been a while since I did it.
An area of growth
I feel an area of growth for me would be learning more about image editing. The website I used confused me a bit so I didn’t add/change as much about the pic that I wanted.
A skill I used outside of class
I used the skills I used from using Wix to make my biochem project this year. It was really helpful to have already done it before and it was really fun.
An idea I want to pitch for next year’s class
I want to see more creative film projects.
Q3 Art Project
I created this project because it stuck out to me . When I saw it I remembered I completed something like it in middle school so I wanted to try it again since it has been a while. When I saw the project I immediately thought I wanted to make a beach scene. I love drawing the beach and wanted to see if I could make a print of it. I like to make the leaves really detailed and I thought it would look really cool on the print. When I actually did it, it was hard for the leaves to turn out on the page. I think my work conveys to audience hard work. I feel this way because I have four different images and it shows how I tried a few times before I got it correct. Something I feel I achieved in this project was patience. I admit it was annoying having to go back and heat up the print and keep carving. Also when I printed and it didn’t come out right. I gained some patience from all of this. This piece relates to past work I have done as I have drawn many things with trees like this. I enjoy making my work have beach scenes. I feel my art relates to contemporary art/prints because of the style and colors. For example I found this print I pictured here below. We both used red and black and the fine lines in the painting reminded me of the tree in my print. http://fengshui-paintings.com/823-Wall-Art-Canvas-Prints-Koi-Fish-Wall-Art-Contemporary-Art-Modern.html (link to the painting)
What I did to create this was I made a sketch of my design. Then after that I traced it onto another piece of thin paper to transfer onto the block I made the official print. I carved the image into the block. I had to put it under the iron to make it warmer and easier to use/carve it in. After that I did some test prints, and then the official ones. When I was doing the prints sometimes they came out too faint or too thick. My only inspiration for this work was my past drawings. My dad taught me how to draw palm trees and I have been doing it ever since. My work reflects me because the beach is one of my favorite places to go. I feel my work could be an influence on others who want to do print making to start if they want to. A technique that was important to this art piece was the tin lines on the leaves of the tree. I wish they showed up better on the print but they really make the tree look real. A new technique I learned was heating the linoleum to make it easier to cut into.
My 3D modeling project Q3
My project was made on tinkercad. I designed a caterpillar. I did a caterpillar for my little sister because she really likes bugs and I thought she would be excited. When I first started the project I watched some tutorials on how to do it. Then I started to design my project. A success I encountered was learning to move the pieces up and down. A failure I encountered was accidentally not saving the project, and I had to start again. Luckily I remembered what I did. In the project I learned about doing 3D modeling and how to use different tools to make different things. Something I learned about myself is that I am not good at computer programs. It is something that takes me awhile to get the hand of. I would watch more videos and try something more complex if I were to do it again. Since this is my first time, I think I took the easier root. I made something easier then others made. A tip I have is watch a few video tutorials on how to work the program you are using before you start so it is easier. This project has inspired me to try to use the 3D printer next time. The tool did not have any specific thing to help me convey the message. I personally feel I could of done this on any 3D modeling website.
Quarter 2 Project - Aliya
For my project, I chose image editing. I originally was going to a picture of a door in a dark room with a beautiful picture on the other side. That was really hard to figure out how to do. I watched videos but I could not figure out how to use it on Pixlr. A success I had with this project is just learning how to use image editing websites, it was something I have never done before. A failure I had with this project was learning how to crop pictures into another picture. Some skills I learned from doing this project is some of the tools used in image editing. An example of this is changing the entire color of the object. Something I learned about myself with completing this project is that this is not something I really enjoy doing. It was cool to explore the website and play around with the pic but technology/photo editing is not my strong suit. I learned to have more patience with working with this stuff even when it gets hard. If I were to do this project again I would learn more about the website and how to work it better. I feel like I would of had a better outcome in the end. Some tips I have for someone completing the project is make sure you watch enough tutorials to understand what website you are using to edit your image. This project has inspired me to improve my photo editing skills in the future. The website did not necessarily help with the message of my pic, but add more details to the pic.
Quarter 2 Art Project - Aliya Rouine
My painting originally started out as a sketch I drew outside of school. I really liked it so I decided to make it my painting. I am not sure if I necessarily had an overall vision of how the finished product would turn out. I think my work communicates patience and effort for my viewers. I could only use three color and I had to shade everything correctly. Something I feel I achieved was learning how to shade better and limit myself to all colors. I feel this work compares to other work I have done in the past because the bright colors. Something I like to do is paint with bright colors. Contemporary art is ard produced in this day and age. By doing some research I found an artist who did a similar piece to mine. She painted some lemons in a jar.http://ind5.ccio.co/PB/g6/W2/38c342a6b70dc8f200f8ee49dcc91328.jpg
I chose this piece because they were both of fruit and had similar shadings to mine and they were both pictures of fruit. Also thread the sketch then I traced it onto a harder canvas top colors used were similar to mine. The first thing I did was make a color chart of the three colors I used. This showed how each color would look mixed with one another. I then traced my drawing onto a canvas to start painting. Then I painted, I made sure the shading was right to make it look more realistic. I did not really have inspiration to paint this. I just saw the pic online and tried recreating it. I feel my work reflects the world we live in because it represents holding on to the important things. I feel an apple can represent It makes an impact on the world because it shows the simple beauty in everyday objects. A technique that is really important to the work is shading. Before I shaded my hands and apple looked weird and unrealistic. Adding the shading really made them pop. Something I learned was how to shade better and make things look more 3 dimensional. I am really glad I got to do this project. It made me explore what just three colors have to offer. They do a lot more than you think. Also I got to paint one of my favorite sketches and see it turn into a beautiful piece of artwork.
Quarter 1 Project
Project Statement
I made my website using Wix. It was a website I have not used before and I wanted to try it out. Personally I am not the greatest when it comes to creating your own website so in the beginning it was hard. After some exploring of weebly got the hang of things. Something I hoped to learn was how to actually make a website presentable for people viewing it.
To complete this project, I first made an outline of what I want my website to look like. Then I picked out the website I wanted to use. Completing this website was a bit hard for me. Trying to find the right layout and put all my information was difficult. I could not really tell how the website worked. After trying a few times I finally got it.
A failure I encountered was my whole website got deleted. I think I forgot to save it one time and when I logged in it wasn’t there. This gave me a chance to make my website better because the layout I had before was a bit confusing. In that sense it was also a success.
Something I learned and got out of this project is how to make websites. I learned how to organize them and make them appealing to look at. I learned to taking your time with this is a good idea to make sure it turns out well.
Something I learned about myself is that I enjoy making websites once I get the hang of it. I like personalizing it and making it your own. Something I would do differently if I had to do it again would be not using a blog layout the first time. It is too hard to work with. You can’t switch pages on that one and it was confusing. A tip for people doing this project is take your time and don’t use a blog layout unless you're making a blog.
I am not sure if this project has inspired me to do anything next. But doing this project has given me ideas for what to do if I want to put something out there, I will just make a website! All the pictures in my website are mine so I don’t need to do proper citation. I feel the medium dictated my project. I used Wix to make my website. I feel like I just went along with what Wix had to offer and made it my own. Overall I am happy with how my project turned out.
