Ever since I visited the Barnes Foundation a few years ago I fell in love with my favorite artist, Amedeo Modigliani. I like his simplicity and abstract drawing of people. This would include his dramatic exaggeration of people’s narrow/long heads and necks. For someone like myself who does not have much knowledge of art, Modigliani’s paintings are very identifiable compared to other artists’ works.

In the art piece I selected (“Jeanne Hebuterne with Hat and Necklace”) a woman is positioned in the middle of the space looking off into the distance. There is a window in the far corner of the picture and possibly a sofa on which she is seated. She is wearing a simple hat, a necklace, and a blouse. Her right hand is draped over the side of the couch in a relaxed position.

With this piece I tried to replicate the original sketch but changed the color scheme. The original was kind of dark and gloomy with earth tones.I tried to experiment with my palette by trying different combinations of colors.  In my sketch I tried to use brighter colors that had contrasts of warm and cool tones. I also chose to eliminate some of the elements in the background so I focused more on the woman’s face and body.

In conclusion, I am delighted with the finished work. I felt I put a good amount of time and effort into really looking at the original and then trying to reinterpret it in my own way. I feel that I successfully created the picture I had imagined.

For my end of the year, senior project, I decided to raise money for Habitat For Humanity Organization. Typical when walking throughout parts of Philadelphia, (whether downtown or in urban areas) it is likely you will see people without  shelter and living on the street. This is something that has stood out to me since I have born and raised in areas where seeing this unfortunate circumstance, was unavoidable. To think that whether tragedies or snow storms we may see as beautiful, may very well cause death of those without home to escape to is torturing to think about.   Just because the situation I live through may be better, shows I should extend a helping hand to others of less opportunity. Through my capstone opportunity, I broadcast my care  by trying to raise $500 to Habit For Humanity. The GoFundMe page I have created has so far raised $305 in several weeks and I hope to continue growing towards my goal. To provide more of my passion I will also run a five-kilometer race to symbolize the distance of effort that homeless have went through.

C.Harris Still Life Drawing

Posted by Cinque Harris in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 11:11 am

In my art piece of still life, I depicted a corked glass bottle, positioned behind a foamed banana. The pieces were displayed on a standard table in Mrs. Hertz’s room. When viewing the pieces the way I aligned them was to have the bottle be a strong vertical on the extreme left and the banana to be a strong horizontal with a curve on the extreme bottom. This allowed for a lot of negative space to be explored behind these two objects. This negative space contains the texture of the table these objects are sitting on.

In this composition I also remembered to include a horizon line on the very top of the picture which shows the edge of the table. This was important to show that the objects are not floating in space but have a place that they sit. I also tried to use some shadow and light, especially on the bottle. Because the bottle is transparent you can see the lines through it. The cork also has pencil marks to create texture.

In general, I tried to create a simple composition that is also strong because of its use of extreme large shapes and where I positioned the objects on the page. I tried to make the negative  space as interesting and important as the positive space. I think this piece is successful because it is balanced. I think I could make it better if I added more shadow to the banana as I did with the bottle. Also, I think I would leave more space under the banana so you could see the bottom and some shadow under it so that it really looks like it is laying on a table. All in all I am pretty happy with this drawing.

Cinque Portrait

Posted by Cinque Harris in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Monday, November 6, 2017 at 1:18 pm

In the art piece that I created, it represents a visual of one of Science Leadership Academy  Beeber students; Jhakur Hall. It portrays him on the soccer field with a ball and goal net in the distance. He is pointing to his jersey number “15” to distinguish hom from his teammates. I wanted this piece to in some form communicate the community of our SLA soccer team, by displaying one of its’  players. I made the piece very simply by just a led pencil and four colored pencils. To be completely honest, this someone aligns with my other pieces as being finished just before set due date. I was not necessarily inspired by a painting artist, but rather sport photographers. The way they photograph athletes after, or during games made we want to cultivate such images. I experimented with detail in this project. Especially regarding the leg muscles, I tried to make it as accurate as possible. Such legs turned out to be my proudest depiction in my work. Included in my success of the art is how I looped around my weakness of drawing faces, so drawing the back of a head was so much easier, and a lightbulb moment. In reflection of my project, I would want to change the open space (or background) of my art piece. Next time maybe include field grass or other players. During this project I learned that portraits are not always, just a fact, but rather a representation of a perspective or opinion of something.

Posted by Cinque Harris in SPANISH 2 - Moran - E on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 3:12 pm

Cuesta luz dinero, amarillo

en la cocina. Treinta pasos,

le dice a tus manos,

ahora en forma de prismáticos.

Podría elevarlas a tus ojos:

..,”

¿Cuáles son mis pensamientos? (Parte cuatro)

I think the theme of poem is hard work. When he describes the reader in a cotton field, he describes fatigue. I connect with this poem because it also describes life. Examples in my life would also be running and physical work. Both things explain my character, Especially in  running, you can see the easy way out (home with the lights on), but determination pushes you. This poem supports my life morals. “To be the best, you must beat the best”, (which in this case, work harder than).
