Ethan Berlenbach Game Design Capstone

Game Design Mini-Course

For my capstone project I decided to lead a Mini-Course at our school teaching 9th graders about game design. The reason I wanted to do this project is because I aspire to become a teacher. The class was held every Wednesday not only this year but also last year when I was leading the class as part of the ILP program. Every week I worked with my partner Austin,  who was helping me run the class as part of his capstone. The goal of the class was to get th 8-16 freshmen depending on which session it was, to learn the basics of game design and be able to transform those skills into a miniature game   We wrote and revised lesson plans in order to teach the class and had to make adjustments as time went on. We had to do often enough because there were many challenges with supplies and technological issues we faced. Overall, I learned a lot about what it means to be a teacher and the challenges teachers face.

Environmental Science PSA

The video doesn't truly represent the goals or the information I learned through researching for this project. Between lack of of the members of my group giving our all including myself and lack of certain supplies the goal I had originally set for my group and I, resulted in our video being highly underwhelming. I felt as though that my group did not really give out much leadership effort, leaving me to do most of the planning. I wish we could have gotten more time to work on the project. The most meaningful part of this project was being able to take national research and citywide research and apply it to my every day life and see food waste happening literally all around me.

#DakotaAccessPipeline -https://twitter.com/zipadeedoodles/status/801825443389308928?lang=en

About 2 weeks ago police used rubber bullets, tear gas, and water in cold temperatures to deter protesters. The police say they used water to put out fires but video footage proves this to not be the case. 167 people were injured. Most recently the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have told the protesters to leave by December 5th.

After reading the article “Norway's Largest Bank Sells Assets in Dakota Access Pipeline Company” I feel grateful for this foreign bank to hold morality over money. The people on the front lines protesting needed to hear some good news and I think this is some of the best good news they have gotten in a while. The article talks about how the largest Norwegian bank has severed its ties with the pipeline and could even revoke the funds it lent the project. As for what the American people should do now, we should continue to oppose the creation of this pipeline. Just because one group has stopped funding this project does not mean we can stop. We must continue to protest this until it is cancelled. We must put more funding into recyclable energy, such as solar and wind power. The more we rely on oil the more and more situations such as DAPL will pop up.

Quarter 4 Project - The Amazing Pushbutton w/Arduino

Posted by Ethan Berlenbach in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 8:36 am

1) Describe your project.

I used an Arduino circuit board to create a button which changes a signal which is being sent from the board to the computer

2) What did you learn while completing this project?

How to set up a circuit board to send a proper signal and some coding so the desired objective of the button would work..

3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

Trying to get the circuit board to work after a few days of checking the code and the wiring

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The most exciting part was finally getting the board to work after days of trying to get the code and the wiring on the board to work.

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

Know more about how to set up the board so I have more time for the project.

This is the arduino. With it I will create an all powerful button that does...something. Currently I am assembling the parts I need to create it. Hopefully it will be something cool.

  1. Describe your project

For my Quarter 2 Art Project I created a Minesion...a mansion created in Minecraft.

  1. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?

I have created mansions before in MInecraft but never to the scale that I did in this case.

  1. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?

Creating a new height at which I can build.

  1. Did you accomplish this goal?

Yes because as Syndrome says “...Its bigger, Its better…”

  1. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

I know because 1 block is equal to 1 meter irl. The buildings I have made previously have been about 8 by 7 blocks and 4 blocks tall, rather than what I have done with this project where the building is 13 by 12 blocks and 15 blocks tall.

  1. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?

Scaling practice.

  1. What are you most proud of in this project?

I am most proud of the amount of detail I put into it.

  1. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

Worked even more on it.

This is my work of art. Every since I was little I have liked astronomy. The idea of a place that one day we can visit if we push ourselves to find it. That's when I decided to make a solar system poster. When I was trying to find an idea through some solar system posters that some people have already made, I didn't really like their styles so i came up with my own. The planets are in a compass formation N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, NE surrounding the sun. That's what you might first notice, but I also added some Easter eggs. Each planet has its own special feature and therefore I added those things to each planet. For example Saturn has its signature rings. This project allowed me to open up to something that I have always wanted to do which is to draw the planets in their glory.

My project is to create a mansion in minecraft. Here I have applied some of the skillz I have learned from various sources as part of my research to this mansion creation. For the project I will be creating something much larger in scale. This is my research because there is no correct way to make something in minecraft. Therefor the mansion I will create will look different from the in the photo.
