Our names are Hector Tapia and Ekkleysia Lumintang. We are seniors at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber High School. For our last year in high school we are assigned a project called a capstone. A project that can be about anything, and possibly influence the world in some way. We have realized that there has been many signs of poverty and people without homes all around Philadelphia. This made us ask a a question "what can we do as student with a voice, to help give and contribute to this community." So we decided to take advantage of this project and use it to help show awareness of the the people struggling everyday, living on the streets hungry, and in need of help.

  1. Arroberts922. "Homelessness in Philadelphia." YouTube. YouTube, 19 Jan. 2011. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0_PcHS5_gs>.

  • This source provides information about the perspective of different residents of philadelphia regarding the homelessness that is going on in their city. We selected this source because it provides some ideas on how the style of the documentary can be made. It also helps me with trying to figure out what types of questions we should be researching, and even figure out where the direction of my project will lead to. One limitation to this source is the fact that it does not reflect the vision we have for this project, and seems like any other typical documentary when you just interview random people. It is not necessarily as successful at catching attention as we would like for our documentary to be.

  1. "Facts on Homelessness." Project HOME. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://projecthome.org/about/facts-homelessness>.

  • This source provides information about the statistics of the amount of homelessness in Philadelphia. This is very helpful due to the fact that I am trying to spread awareness of the amount of homelessness in Philadelphia, and how everyone has different reasons for why they are in the position they are in. It isn’t just single homeless people, but in some cases there are families that are stuck having to live in their car, or sleeping on the train, or even at the train station. This website covers a lot of information including  the circumstances that the majority of the homeless are in. One limitation of this source is that it is only estimates of the amount of homeless. So the number could have risen, or fallen during the time this information has been released.

  1. Blt189. "Down and out (Homeless in Philly)." YouTube. YouTube, 18 Aug. 2011. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op2Bq6cNU5g>.

  • This source provides a bit of information during the introduction in regards to facts on homelessness in Philadelphia. Except this video was made in 2011, and I am not sure if this is an accurate source. The main thing that I am able to get out of this source is being able to get a look on the director’s idea, and how he came across on trying to make this type of documentary. There are some things I liked about what he did, and there are some things I did not like. When making the documentary I will be sure to copy the things that I do, and avoid making the same mistakes he committed when editing/shooting the video.

4. Lattanzio, Morgan Zalot Vince. "Fighting for a Place to Call Home: The Silent Epidemic of Youth Homelessness." NBC 10 Philadelphia. NBC 10 Philadelphia, 07 Feb. 2017. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Fighting-for-a-Home-The-Silent-Epidemic-of-Youth-Homelessness-332250942.html>.

  • This source provides information specifically on the youth that struggle with being homeless in the streets of Philadelphia. The article not only provides statistics on what the homeless youth would typically do if they had no where to stay, but 5 different interviews on the lives of 5 homeless young people. I found this source useful because it is definitely the source that has come closest to being able to accomplish what I have in my mind/my vision for the documentary.

5.   | , Jared Brey. "Philly to Focus Outreach to Homeless on Center City "Hotspots"." Philadelphia Magazine. N.p., 18 May 2016. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://www.phillymag.com/citified/2016/05/16/philadelphia-homeless-center-city/>.

  • This source provides information about what the city of Philadelphia has tried to do in regards to the amount of homelessness. It brings up how the Jim Kenney administration had a plan to help get the homeless off the streets. Except the thing that is wrong with this article is that it was written on May 16, 2016. In about 3 months it would be a year since the article was made. Reading this article it made me feel like instead of fixing the homeless problem it has just been swept under the carpet. Instead of finding homes, and shelters, the homeless are just straight up being pushed out of our city.

6. "Homeless Advocacy Project - Free legal help for homeless individuals and families." Homeless Advocacy Project - Free legal help for homeless individuals and families. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://www.homelessadvocacyproject.org/>.

  • This source provides information about an organization that helps out the homeless. I don’t want to just present the problem in the documentary, but be able to provide somewhat of a solution. If I am able to get at least one person’s sympathy, and get at least one person wondering on how they could help the cause, I have achieved my goal. It is for that one person that I would include this source. The only problem though is that this source does not focus in Philly, because it is a pretty big organization that covers more than just Philadelphia.

7."7 things you should know about homelessness in Philly." Generocity Philly. N.p., 13 June 2016. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://generocity.org/philly/2016/05/24/homelessness-facts-poverty-youth-government/>.

  • This source provides information about 7 facts on the homelessness in Philadelphia. It mentions topics that I didn’t even think to look at. Such as how in the LGBTQ community there is a major problem in regards to the youth that are left homeless. This is definitely a topic I would like to touch upon because of how popular the Gay rights movement has been. So to intertwine the 2 topics would be a nice way to look at homelessness from a whole new perspective.

8. "HomelessShelterDirectory." Philadelphia Homeless Shelters and Services - philadelphia PA Homeless Shelters - philadelphia Pennsylvania Homeless Shelters. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/cgi-bin/id/city.cgi?city=philadelphia&state=PA>.

  • This source provides information on the amount of shelters that there are in Philadelphia, as well as their location. The reason I would like to search for information like this is because I don’t want to just interview the homeless, but be able to provide at least a little help by providing them with information on what they can do to help themselves. Hopefully this would influence others to do the same, and simply help out the homeless by providing simple information.

9. https://www.nlchp.org/documents/Homeless_Stats_Fact_Sheet

  • This source provides information about the laws regarding homelessness, and poverty in the nation. As I read through the source it seems very professional, and reliable. It provides details on homelessness going way back. Finding this source makes me want to branch out more towards spreading information that is national, and not just talk about the city of Philadelphia, because although it is a situation in Philadelphia it does affect the rest of the nation as well.

10. "Philadelphia unveils new, proactive outreach program for homeless." PhillyVoice. N.p., 16 May 2016. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <http://www.phillyvoice.com/philadelphia-unveils-new-outreach-program-homeless/>.

  • This article explains that there is apparently a new outreach program created by the city of Philadelphia. It talks about the story of a man they helped, and although he claimed to be homeless it had turned out he could return home whenever he pleased. This is another point I would like to bring out. Most of the time it is the fault of the person themself that they are in that position. Except that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve help. A limitation to this source is that it is from last year on May 16. It is unknown of any other cases in which they were able to help anyone out from this year. So I can not necessarily say this is a successful Philadelphia program.

How to Use 5 iMovie Features

Posted by Hector Tapia in TECH (INTRO TO DESIGN MULTIMEDIA) - Hertz - d2 on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 4:50 pm
When I was doing the screencasts for the video you have no idea how many times i messed up, and had to start all over. I had to use my mac computer, because for one the chrome book does not have iMovie, and second my chrome book is messed up. This makes things harder because I had to find a good app in the app store... that was free. Which can be rather difficult. Nonetheless I was able to find one. So when I finished with the screen casting I had to find a way to download the video it took, because this was an internet based app. This meant that I had to figure out how to download a screencast from online. I was able to figure it out after looking at sources from google for half an hour. The ironic part is that I edited the video with iMovie. This was a really good learning experience, because it was the first time I had ever done a screencast. I definitely think that I would use that tool again for a project.

Here is the link to my video on youtube just in case the code I embedded does not work:

In order to create the spiral(aka the rams horn) You are going to need a protractor, because without it you are not going to be able to do the math portion. You can start off by putting the dot anywhere on the blank piece of paper that you have. Once you have your dot you want to create a line that is an inch long. Then create another line, that is also an inch, where it would create a 90 degree angle. Then connect the 2 ends of those lines in order to create your right triangle. From there you are going to use the hypotenuse from that triangle as your base for the next triangle. You will then repeat the process. The spiral of Theodorus is based off of the pythagorean theorem. The equation a^2+b^2=c^2. When you simplify the answer for c^2 by square rooting it, that will be your hypotenuse for that triangle. When you see the hypotenuse for all the triangles you will see a slight increase in your numbers as you keep adding triangles. You will get to a point where there will be no more room for any right triangles. That is when you know you have finished. If you're feeling creative you can make your own design with the spiral, such as I did by making it the horn of a ram.

Oral History- H.Tapia

Posted by Hector Tapia in African American History - Roy - A on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 12:37 am
In this video Hector Tapia is interviewing three people, James Cush, Dennis Gruer, and Alexander Henderson, on 10 questions that are related to the civil rights movement. Alexander Henderson brings up what Dr. Martin Luther King jr. did in the civil rights movement, and racial profiling in his interview. All three of them also say that they have felt like their rights have been violated by the government. Two of them said it was because of the police, and one of them said it was because of the army.

Dr Martin Luther King jr. was one of the most recognizable civil rights leaders. He was the main civil rights movement leader. The movement was a success, it led to the civil rights act of 1964. On February 26, 2012 Trayvon Martin was murdered by a Hispanic male, George Zimmerman. The reason that happened wa because of racial profiling.

Transcript:

Hector- Hi, my name is Hector Tapia and this is my Civil rights movement project. I hope you enjoy.

Hector-What do you believe to be the difference between human and civil rights?

James- There is no difference, human beings require civil rights to exist in a society together.

Hector- So did ever feel that your rights have been violated?

James- Of course!

Hector- By who?

James- I’ve felt in the course of my life, of course my rights have been violated in a lot of type of ways. Being drafted to go to vietnam was one.

Hector- How do you remember the civil rights movement was it a positive or negative thing in your life?

James-It was a positive thing.

Hector- I am going to mention human and civil rights leaders, i’ll say them 2 at a time, and out of those 2 I want you to tell me which one affected you the most.

James-Ok

Hector- Martin Luther King .jr or Nelson Mandela

James- Nelson Mandela

Hector- Malcolm X or Gandhi

James- Gandhi

Hector- Rosa Parks or Barack Obama

James- Rosa Parks

Hector- What do you consider to be moral?

James- Anything that pertains to human behavior. When its the love its moral, when there is no love its immoral. You have a choice, its either one or zero.(soft laugh)

Hector- (soft laugh) Is it your responsibility to make sure that your neighbors rights are protected?

James-Yes

Hector- What do you think is most important to the nation, religion or politics?

James-It would be politics.

Hector- Why?

James-To have a society that functions; there is so many different religions it would be chaos if you try to run it with religion.

Hector- For the last question, if you had the opportunity to create or change a law what would it be?

James- I would probably want to create a law.

Hector- What would it be?

James- Everyone must love everyone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hector- What do you believe to be the difference between human and civil rights?

Alexander- The way you treat one another, now your talking with somebody with sense. Go on, go on.

Hector-Did you ever feel that your rights have been violated?

Alexander- Yes!

Hector-By who?

Alexander- Police department!

Hector-How?

Alexander-Because the police profile black man, now I’m a gentlemen and a soldier and im a veteran.Put my hat on and I’m a respectable man who has never been in jail, put your hat on like this, (puts his hat to the side), the cops will stop you. I dont think its correct for your hat to be like that, but it doesn’t mean you did anything. Next question.

Hector-How do you remember the civil rights movement was it a positive or negative thing in your life?

Alexander- Positive thing, MLK initiated it other people started it but he was the founder of the civil rights movement.

Hector- I am going to mention human and civil rights leaders, i’ll say them 2 at a time, and out of those 2 I want you to tell me which one affected you the most.

Alexander -Alright, alright go ahead.

Hector- Martin Luther King .jr or Nelson Mandela

Alexander-(Silent for a moment) No comment, they were both equal.

Hector- Malcolm X or Gandhi

Alexander-(Again, silent for another moment) No comment.

Hector- Rosa Parks or Barack Obama

Alexander- Rosa Parks

Hector- What do you consider to be moral?

Alexander- Morality is ethic, sexual, no rapist, that is morality. Dont take advantage of nobody, and act like respected.

Hector- Is it your responsibility to make sure that your neighbors rights are protected?

Alexander-Absolutely correct.

Hector- What do you believe is most important to the nation, religion or politics?

Alexander- Religion!, politics is rubbish.

Hector- For the last question, if you had the opportunity to create or change a law what would it be?

Alexander- The democratic and republican parties would be one because they go against each other and that fucks up, excuse my language, the nation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hector- What do you believe to be the difference between human and civil rights?

Dennis- Well human and civil rights are basically the same thing, I mean pretty close. Civil rights is like when they have different senses for different nationalities. Like back when they changed the law for the blacks to have the right to vote, and stuff like that. Human rights is like when you just get treated like shit by your government.

Hector-Did you ever feel that your rights have been violated?

Dennis- Yes

Hector- By who?

Dennis- Policemen

Hector- What did they do?

Dennis- You see how my car is sitting right here, I pulled up one day and I got a ticket. You see how this corner right here, (he points at corner with stop sign), you know how you have to pull up in front of it to see. They acted like I ran a red light, they treated me like a criminal.

Hector-How do you remember the civil rights movement?

Dennis- I don't remember a lot of it because I was fairly young, but I remember MLK. I remember a lot of people who were involved in it.

Hector- I am going to mention human and civil rights leaders, i’ll say them 2 at a time, and out of those 2 I want you to tell me which one affected you the most.

Dennis- Alright

Hector- Martin Luther King .jr or Nelson Mandela

Dennis- I would say Nelson Mandela.

Hector- Malcolm X or Gandhi

Dennis- Malcolm X

Hector- Rosa Parks or Barack Obama

Dennis- Barack Obama

Hector-What do you consider to be moral?

Dennis- Everybodys morals are different, you know?

Hector- Well what do you consider it to be?

Dennis- People make moral decisions on more on how they were raised, some people werent raised on moral, its kind of hard to answer that question for me.

Hector- Is it your responsibility to make sure that your neighbors rights are protected?

Dennis- Its not my responsibility, but i think its our responsibility to make sure our rights are protected.

Hector- What do you think is most important to our nation, religion or politics?

Dennis- Religion

Hector- Why?

Dennis- Because think a lot of people dont have that structure, no background religious wise. I think if somebody believes in something they will be more capable of making right decisions.

Hector-And for the last question, if you had the opportunity to create or change a law what would it be?

Dennis- Uhh, now thats a good one,(laughs). You got me on that one, I dont know im going to have to pass on that one. There is so much stuff that I don't know what I would change or create.

Let there be Light!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the Hat?

Posted by Hector Tapia in Physics - Gray - B on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 11:51 am
Well what we did is put lights on at hat. A hat? Yes a hat! In the beginning we were skeptical of doing this. We were unsure and we weren't even going to do this at first. But after sitting down after a while and talking we decided lighting up a hat would be cool. We wanted to do something cool and different but also simple and pretty decent. And we came to a conclusion of doing this. And it turned out! We got all them to light some lighter than others but it worked out! Mission accomplished!
