Jadaline Torres: Sexual Assaults on College Campuses Capstone

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Senior Capstone · Aziz · ILP/TFI/CAP on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10:26 pm
As a young woman, going into college this fall, my goal creating this project was to expand not just my knowledge but other upcoming freshman going into college, the importance of sexual assault on college campuses and why its such a common thing with not enough attention. I also wanted to address the damage sexual assaults cause, what people think when they hear sexual assaults, the controversy of the topic, and what we can do to bring more attention to prevent them. I included research in my capstone by looking at various statistics and websites with information on sexual assault on college campuses. I incorporated collaboration by connecting with different students from SLA (a 9th grader, 11th grader, senior, one teacher) to see how all of their perspectives varied/differed. For the presentation section of the core values, I first decided to do a google slide shows with different statistics and helpful information. I changed my mind because I felt a video was something more memorable to leave behind at SLA and I also felt it was more creative to get some of my peers involved and hear about their views/opinions of the topic. In conclusion, reflecting on this capstone, I was happy with the outcome of what I created and liked that I was able to collab a few of my peer's opinions/views and see how they were different/alike. Creating this project,  I aimed to be able to spread more awareness of sexual assaults on college campuses and I hope I achieved this.

Water Pollution

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 9:01 pm
For my second quarter environmental science benchmark, my group members and I completed a PSA video of the importance of water pollution. One reason we chose this topic was to raise awareness of how bad water pollution affects our earth negatively. One thing my group members and I did well was stay on top of our checkpoints and keep in contact. The most meaningful part of this PSA was being able to learn and expand my knowledge of water pollution. Check out our PSA here!

Global Water Crisis Infographic

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 8:35 pm

Water crisis is one of the biggest environmental issue that occurs all over the world. Being in a water crisis is more known as water scarcity. Water scarcity is the lack of having access to fresh, clean water in different regions of a world. The water crisis is a big environmental justice issue; billions are affected by the lack of clean water and there are many different movements and groups that are trying to get this problem the attention it deserves. The thing that stood out to me the most while researching this topic is how many countries and cities within those countries are affected by these water issues and how little attention it receives. I am still wondering what americans can do to bring more attention to these natural disasters.

Toxic City: Infographic

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 10:10 pm
When learning about the lead poisoning that has been occurring in Philadelphia, I was very surprised at what I read. Philadelphia has the high poverty rate and the highest lead poisoning percentages in Philadelphia neighborhoods. I was also shocked at the fact that the lead paints being chipped from old buildings/schools, has a sweet taste to children. In conclusion to what I had read and to this mini project, I still wonder why and how these percentages are still so high without no attention/intentions of lowering them.

A sustainable fashion foundation

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 2:25 pm
For my quarter 1 environmental science benchmark, my partners and I created a fictional fashion factory that creates clothing with little to no man made resources and more with natural resources. An industry affects all of earths system because in order for industry's to function, they take a piece from each one. For example, the fashion industry uses a lot of oils to create to clothing affecting the biosphere. With much effort from humans, we can save energy, water and our earth by thinking twice about the resources we use and think twice about the things we use everyday and where they are really coming from.

Natural Disasters and Earths Systems Research

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:04 am

Earth's systems all rely on one another in different ways. Earth's systems include the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere. Depending on what it is, these systems can affect each other positively and negatively. Positively would include examples like recycling more or negatively would include natural disasters like wildfires. Wildfires are fires that can be caused naturally based off of natural causes like hot air. With the understanding of environmental science or how these wildfires are caused, we can decreases the chances of a wildfire with options like avoiding smoking, stop throwing trash in forest areas, cleaning up dry plants that could cause fuels etc. With efforts like this and more, we can create a more sustainable future for our earth.

Fast Plants: Reflection

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Biochemistry 2 Honors on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 10:04 am

Before planting the seeds, we predicted a mix combination of the colors it labeled on the description, the seeds did sprout to match my prediction. The parent generation grew way faster. At first, they did not sprout although, we used another set of seeds from a different parent generation. I believe taking care of my plants and nourishing them everyday helped them thrive. With the help of selective pressure and other environmental factors, this helps an organism meet its environments living standards better. In conclusion, what stood out to me the most this course was my benchmark research. I was beyond surprised about how bad we treat our environment and how much we don't realize it.

Quarter 4 Final Art Benchmark

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Art 1 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 9:31 am

For my quarter 4 final project for art class, I decided to create a self portrait of myself. I choose a self portrait because the artist I researched (Frida Kahlo) was known for her phenomenal portraits of herself. To create my work, I used plain thin white colored paper about 12x13in wide. I wanted a natural soft appearance of the portrait so I used light pencil to sketch it out and colored pencils only to fill it in. This relates a lot to my other work being a lot similar because my motive is to always keep it simple which means my supplies are similar to my other projects supplies, processes as well. Creating my project, I set up checkpoint for myself so I could receive the best product possible. I created a rough draft, fixed up my flaws, started my final and began adding final touches and color. I received a peer review as well. Frida Kahlo inspired my work for this project. It is very similar to the art she creates and to her portraits. I am most proud of my finished product of my art work and I am most proud of how I managed my time. In conclusion to my artist statement, I learned your artwork is what you make it and that you can create anything you put your mind to.

For my quarter 4 biochemistry benchmark, we were assigned to choose a specific biome of our choice and research it focusing mostly on unique issues facing the biome. While completing this project, a lot of information about my chosen biome (the rainforest/Amazon) stood out to me. It was interesting to read because I wasn´t aware of how much damage people were causing our trees, animal and our world itself. Upon completion of the project, I enjoyed being able to make a physical display of the biome and having a chance to show my creative side to my classmates and teachers.

Q2: Art Benchmark

IMG_3125 (1)

For my quarter 2 art benchmark, I created a clay 3d rose. The rose is created with solid color clay and colored with paint. I created the rose to represent “beauty in everything” since the rose has been known for that. For the rose, I used a few specific art tools to create my piece. For the first, I used clay along with my fingers for carving the clay to my liking of petals. I then used red paint for my petals and a green paint for a leaf. I made sure this piece related to my previous work by making sure the theme kept the idea of having beauty. The steps of this process did not take too long. You first want to take a good amount of clay. You then want to start breaking off pieces of your clay, molding them into petals of your liking. When you’ve gotten your petals, you want to connect them together going into the direction of a rose. When you’re satisfied with your looking of the rose, let it dry for a day or two. Your final step would include painting/coloring your rose. My work reminded me of Hukasai since he is known for making garden like pieces. When creating your piece, painting is an important technique because you want to make sure your paint does not interfere with the other petals that will be different. I am most proud of my consistency I kept throughout creating this project because the project was a challenge and did include a lot of fails. Although, I wouldn’t want anything to be changed. In conclusion, this project was a learning experience and is now a fun new hobby.

Jadaline Torres Art: Quarter 1 benchmark

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Art 1 · Hertz · d1 on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 9:46 am
My finished product of this project includes a side view of an individual. Inside of the body, there are dozens of different plants that grow out of the indvidual along with a black background. This reflects me and my culture because it tells the person who looks at it, that I am continuously growing even with the bad in my life. The tools used for my piece of work included markers, paint and pastels. I used the color patels for my plants to give a more pop along with the black paint for my background. The markers were used to outline some plants that the pastels couldn't cover. This was my first time using pastels for any project so it was something new which meant it couldn't relate to any past project I made. My process included the rough draft of my drawing as step one. When I made it to the best of my ability, I painted my background and then pasteled. When some of the pastel couldn't get all the small white parts in my plants, I filled in with marker for the best appearance. My work was inspired by the artist of my sister since she created a similar look. Using pastel was a very specific technique that was important because it caused a lot of mess. SO when using it, I had to be careful to use it to the best of my liking, I learned this technique in the process of my project. I am most of proud of my finished product and I wouldn't change anything.

Jadas Linoleum Rose

I worked/created the linoleum project because it looked the most interesting to me. Watching one of my peers work on it from first quarter, it made me want to do. It seemed like a challenge and required a lot of different tools. Working on this project, I was hoping to achieve the idea I had in my head for what I wanted this to look like. I wanted to achieve a clean cut, black rose. I want my work to communicate to the viewer as beauty when it is first seen. Previous work relates to my linoleum by the time I took to create this project and the time I put into it. My process was simple and short for this project. I started off with my sketch of my linoleum which was a small rose. After the sketch, I transferred it onto the rubber and iron & carved it until I thought it was best. Painting applied to the rubber and a blank white piece of paper was made. My project wasn´t the best and not the neatest but I want people who view it, to get the message that its ok if its not perfect because its art and art is whatever you think is beautiful to you. Carving my linoleum was an important technique because it took patient and time to get it out the way you want to. Carving was one of the newest techniques I learned doing this project and the one I enjoyed the most.

Overall, my linoleum project is important to me and I worked hard on it. The techniques I used were different which taught me something new and I plan to use them in my next art projects in the future.

Jada's artwork

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:14 pm

I created this specific picture because I figured an elephat head would be the best way to insert my texture and lines into my drawing. I hoped to achieve a culture look in my drawing with lines and different designs. I hope my work lets the viewer know that I worked hard for on it and the look I was achieving. I achieved the look I wanted for this project and getting my project done on time like I planned. I first started my project off with a rough draft of my elephant head with a pencil and went over with my final utensils which was a pen. I made sure all my different designs in my drawing werent the same, and where unique. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do for my texture&lines drawing so I looked up images on google and wasn inspired by a specific elephant drawing I came across, so I tried to get an idea from that (). I feel the pen I used was technique to the work because the thiness of it made my designs in my drawing more unique and neat. A new technique I learned while creating this project was to make sure your drawing is always rough before you start it.

While doing this project I learned to always work hard on your work but to take your time while doing it. This project made me realize to never wait last minute and to work just as hard on it as if it were any other project. I enjoyed creating my peice although if I could go back to chose another idea I would.

color wheel project

IMG_1600
IMG_1600

I created the flower look for my color wheel because I felt like it fit best with the idea. A flower could have as many petals as I wanted to draw and it was simple. My overall vision for my wheel came out as I pictured it to be which was all of my color attached to my petals with a clear, solid color background so the my petals with color would pop out more. I expect my audience to be just as satisfied with my final product as much as I was. The color wheel project did not so much remind me of past art classes although, the creating and having my own idea did. Knowing each color and mixing them also reminded me of old work while learning these colors in the beginning of the semester.

I got the idea of my overall project from some ideas I seen online of color wheels. I learned while creating my wheel, having a steady hand and being careful with your paint brush plays a role because you don’t want your work to come out sloppy by not being careful or working slow. I learned to be careful, and dedicated to your work by creating my wheel. I also learned that art does not not always have to be perfect but it is dedication in what you put into the work you created.

Self respect

Posted by Jadaline Torres in ART 9 - Hertz - a2 on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 9:47 am
I created a woman wearing a t shirt that states "a mans opinion does not define you" the meaning of this drawing was to let other females know that a male or anyone whatever the gender is does not define who you are and confidence does not come within someone else's opinion but starts with you. I seen this picture on the internet and seen the same picture but I changed the quote to something I related to/liked. I hung my drawing in the hallway on a wall, I didn't pick this location for any specific reason I just wanted to make sure it was high enough to not touch and just be looked at so it didn't get ruined. This assignment changed my view on art by realizing that art can be anywhere and creating "art" is anything by someone who puts their hard work into something they created.

The Internet and You

Posted by Jadaline Torres in TECH 1 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 10:13 am
When online, make sure you watch what you write because your decisions of what you post can affect others. For example cyber bullying is a serious issue that is still active and mainly because of negative harassment from one user to the other on the internet.

The internet can really hurt your future if you don't watch what you post/write. Everything on the internet stays on the internet even if you delete it. Colleges/jobs look at what you post and they're not going to wan't to accept someone who is smoking/partying etc. every night so make sure you keep yourself together online and be mature.

My number one rule while being online is to be yourself. Its the best way to be and its better that way. No one likes a person who's totally different online, than in person.

social media survival guide

Posted by Jadaline Torres in TECH 1 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 10:26 am

In my opinion, when I am online I am myself. I act/communicate the way I would I would if someone seen me in person. I do not cyberbully anyone else and stick to myself on my social media accounts. I don’t specifically know what other people think of me when I am online but maybe people think I am quiet because I dont post alot or interact with alot of people online. When I am online, I do consider what I post most of the time. I make sure it’s nothing violent, rude a threat to others, etc. Or even if it's a picture of me I make sure it's not too explicit etc. because media gets around fast and I don't want a stranger or anyone to see something of me I didn't want them to see. Anything you post on social media doesn't go away so you have to watch what you post. There are many pros and cons online for example you can promote something online but just know it'll be shared all over social media which means everyone can see it. Lack of control can take a big part when you're online. For example, if you post a status or even a photo after that it's not in your control anymore. Even if you delete it you can find your post anywhere on different websites, google etc. Some colleges/jobs look at your social media accounts to see who you are outside of being professional. It's important to know who your identity is online.
