Jada Reynolds - Capstone

For my capstone, I focused on trying to remove allergy triggers from the school and air quality improvement. I made a “PSA” to try and inform the students of how to prevent certain things from happening in the school.

I talked about asthma and how people who don’t even have asthma, can have asthma-like responses to certain things. I also briefly discussed heat strokes and heat exhaustion, plants that can be useful, and simple forms of modern technology that can maintain their usefulness as well.

For my senior capstone, my friend and I decided to create a collection of poems for young girls. We would have our poems divided into different sections for each stage a heartbroken young girl goes through. We decided to do this because people don't recognize what a lot of young girls go through and they normally end up dealing with everything alone. 11th grade year was when we decided on this idea when it was mentioned by a friend. The process was simple, and the fact that I was actually going through things when I wrote most of these poems helped a lot. What I learned is that most of out experiences are they same so we shouldn't feel uncomfortable talking to each other so that we are not alone. The product turned out great. We created a website to showcase what we accomplished.

Sarah Sam's Senior Capstone

For my senior capstone, my focus was on sustainable art. Sustainable art not only promotes sustainable practices but also stimulates people on how we can better our environment. There are many hazardous compounds in art products that can harm the environment and human health. I mostly did a lot of research on different sustainable art interpretations such as, using recycled materials or Eco-friendly materials, buying supplies from sustainable businesses, etc. To accomplish this, I partnered with the SLAB Green Team to compete in a high school Eco-sculpture competition. With the new addition of the 5th graders, I was able to have 5th graders do art as we brainstorm what our sculpture would be about. During this process, I challenged the 5th graders to conceptually think of how we can turn their art pieces into reality through sustainable art. Whether that be making a ladybug out of recycled red bottle caps or a butterfly from used curtains.

Diamond Adams Capstone

What I did for my capstone was talk about and educate the youth on sex trafficking. Which is “the action or practice of illegally transporting people from one country or area to another for the purpose of sexual exploitation”. I made two slide show presentations, and even made a video that explained strictly what sex trafficking was. I explained statistics, warning signs and even how to prevent getting trafficked yourself. I even took it amongst myself, to have my video broad casted in our first Senior Capstone showcase. In my first slide show presentation I just simply discussed information on my topic that was researched. For my second slideshow I discussed the challenges I faced, my process and lastly the legacy I will be potentially leaving behind. Which to me is leaving the youth with enough valuable information on sex trafficking so they can take a stand in this epidemic. Maybe even coming up with programs to stop these sort of things from happening. Throughout the process I gathered information for sex trafficking and asked my adviser/capstone mentor for help where ever it was needed. I also asked around other people who may have had more information on the topic than me. I interviewed a few of my peers to see what they knew, and how they felt about the topic. Throughout my capstone process there was one struggle I encountered. That struggle was making sure my project tied into our core values to the best of my ability in which it does. For my capstone, I decided to make a PSA about why people should adopt their animals from the shelter and not buy from any breeders or pet shops. I’ve always been an animal lover since I was born. I’ve even thought deep and hard about going into a career with animals such as a vet. Deciding the topic for my project wasn’t hard at all and this is even one of my favorite projects that I’ve done in my high school career. The process for the project wasn’t too hard to do since I enjoyed it. We researched a bunch online about puppy mills and pet shops. I also went in person to the SPCA and interviewed an employee there who also gave us a lot of good information which is shown in my presentation. Our final product ended up being the slideshow with all the information we learned, and it also includes a video interview and a montage of all the animals at the shelter.

Lamier Howard's Capstone

Hello my name is Lamier and for my capstone, I worked with my friendd Dexter, Anthony, and Eric to create a video game demo. A lot went into making this however. First we had to come up with a plot for the story which we had to change multiple times. We then had to choose what engine we wanted to make it end (we decided on Construct since it was easy to learn and we didn't have time to learn the other complex ones like JavaScript.) We had many other issues such as time management and communication. It even got to the point where we thought about scrapping the idea altogether and do a card game. However, we got it done and we're pretty proud of it. The link to the game demo is down below.

Elohim Smith Capstone

My capstone is in correlation with my passion for music, so I volunteered at The Village of Arts and Humanities. Which is a program that basically offers a safe space in North Philadelphia where children can go in order to have a creative expression in many different ways such as photography, music production, journalism, fashion design, etc. My role in this was helping children at the program with music production which consisted of me helping students with their individual projects they were working on and moderating them with their group project which was different groups collaborating with each other to come together and make an original song based on the topic that they chose. I also tried to help The Village of Arts and Humanities by trying to recruit more students who would've been interested in being in the music production program. I learned that music is a universal art form because of all the different types of kids that were extremely excited to be there every day and try to work on their craft and trying to get better at making music. This was something that I immensely enjoyed working on this project. I've posted a link to my Capstone process presentation also.

Jeremiah Conley Capstone

My capstone was mixed with my own goal related to engineering and the Green Team agenda of completing the Butterfly Pavillion sculpture. As a member of the Green team and also a future engineer. I wanted a project that combined my two passions along with a minor in business finance, in this case, it also includes Third Party donations. Working with other members of the Green team to complete this sculpture, I came up with multiple ways to sustain the Green team with Third party donations and also ways we could continue to support the green team in the future without being here anymore. And this is a short presentation based on that and all the information I and other members have collected.

Benjamin Hahn Capstone

Posted by Benjamin Hahn in Senior Capstone · Aziz · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 10:27 am

My name is Benjamin Hahn and for my Capstone Project I decided to research the impact that paper has on the school and how the school could benefit from using less paper. I was given the numbers from Ms. Moderski of how much paper the school school uses and how much it costs the school. From this I gathered that an obvious benefit to using less paper would be that it would save money, and paper isn’t great for the environment either which is another benefit to using less of it. To incorporate a presentation aspect I decided to host a paper free day at school where I requested that the teachers not use any paper for a day, at the end of that day I had the teachers fill out a reflection form to gather data on how many teachers participated, how those teachers feel about paper, and whether or not they would consider using less paper in the future.

Jadaline Torres: Sexual Assaults on College Campuses Capstone

Posted by Jadaline Torres in Senior Capstone · Aziz · ILP/TFI/CAP on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10:26 pm

As a young woman, going into college this fall, my goal creating this project was to expand not just my knowledge but other upcoming freshman going into college, the importance of sexual assault on college campuses and why its such a common thing with not enough attention. I also wanted to address the damage sexual assaults cause, what people think when they hear sexual assaults, the controversy of the topic, and what we can do to bring more attention to prevent them. I included research in my capstone by looking at various statistics and websites with information on sexual assault on college campuses. I incorporated collaboration by connecting with different students from SLA (a 9th grader, 11th grader, senior, one teacher) to see how all of their perspectives varied/differed. For the presentation section of the core values, I first decided to do a google slide shows with different statistics and helpful information. I changed my mind because I felt a video was something more memorable to leave behind at SLA and I also felt it was more creative to get some of my peers involved and hear about their views/opinions of the topic. In conclusion, reflecting on this capstone, I was happy with the outcome of what I created and liked that I was able to collab a few of my peer's opinions/views and see how they were different/alike. Creating this project,  I aimed to be able to spread more awareness of sexual assaults on college campuses and I hope I achieved this.
