Teen Pregnancy PSA

Our video discusses the demographics of teen pregnancy and how society as well as politics has an influence over these numbers. We focused on the lack of preventative care surrounding young teen women and a way to better provide support and care to teen girls and teen moms to prevent more pregnancy. I contributed to the project by doing my fair share of research and editing the video. The most meaningful part of this PSA was getting to see how far we have come as a country in helping to push against teen pregnancy but we still have a ways to go.

Our project focuses on how obesity, one of the largest health issues in America today, effects the brain and homeostasis. Through the completion of this project I learned so much about how obesity impacts every major organ system and how damaging it can be to the nervous system.

Comparative Ethnobotany

REFLECTION:

Indigenous plants, cultures and wisdom should be conserved by spreading awareness of indigenous people and their background. They use every plant in a different way depending what the plant is good for. Depending on the plant, like herbs can be used as medicinal, while other plants like fruits, nuts, vegies, is used as food. If humans genetically modify the plants to help change with the environment, it will allow the plants to survive in those specific environments, etc. What stood out to us was how many different organizations there was to help out the Indigenous plants and people.

I created a sculpture of a woman pouring paint. It is a black and white woman and the only color is from the color she is pouring on the floor. I wanted to recreate a famous photo of the well-known sculptor Lynda Benglis.  To create my sculpture, I used tinfoil, clay, acrylic paint, wood, hot glue and various clay tools. I first used the tinfoil to create a basic shape to mold the clay around. After I was able to mold my clay around the Torso I had created out of tinfoil, I then let it air-dry. I painted the platform and the clay woman in white and black paint and let it dry. Then I took plastic wrap and poured red blue and yellow paints on to it and then proceeded to swirl it around to create a pattern. This gave the illusion of poured wax on a floor. Once everything dried  I made a bucket out of clay glued the acrylic paint onto the bucket and then glued figure onto the white platform. My current work is very similar to my previous work because I created a clay sculpture in my last project too. A new technique that made my sculpture easier to create, was the tin foil method. By balling up tin foil, it made my project lighter and it caused the clay to crack a little less when dried. I am proud of this overall project because I believe it looks very nice, and it stays true to the original idea I had about it.

3D Sculpting

In my project I chose to create a clay model of a women’s open legs. In place of genitals, there is a large flower. The skin of the piece is comprised of patches of tan and brown to represent different skin tones. I want this piece to encourage an empowering message about sexuality and femininity and masculinity. It is often looked down upon to be open with sexuality and I want my piece to show that all people should not be ashamed of who they are. To create this work I used metal wire, air dry clay, acrylic paint and a fake flower. First I created the frame with the metal wire and then wrapped the wire in the clay, shaping legs and the bottom half of a torso. I then let the clay air dry, and painted over the entire thing with different shades of brown. I then hot glued the flower in between the legs of the sculpture. This piece is definitely more meaningful than my last. I chose to create this piece in the light of something I think about very often.

Another artist that has inspired me to want to start sculpting is Lynda Benglis. Specifically her exhibition titled Female Sensibility inspired me to go in the direction of sexuality.

http://www.cheimread.com/artists/lynda-benglis/exhibitions

The most important technique to my piece has to be the smoothing. Making sure the clay dries smoothly and not rigid was accomplished by wetting the pads of my fingers and smoothing over the surface. A new technique I learned has to be the ability to shave layers of the clay off. You have to remove and reapply to effectively shape the sculpture. I am most proud of the actual shape of the body. The legs and hips and everything else look very nice in my opinion. If I could change one thing about this project it would have to be the color of the skin. I wanted it to be a bright color like purple or green. I have learned to be more comfortable with clay.

This is a Digital Portfolio where I can display information about me and showcase some of my best works. In completing this Digital Portfolio I had hoped that I would have created  an easily accessible, professional platform in which I could represent myself to the world. This is precisely what I have achieved. In order to build a successful website, I first had to choose the best website creator for me. My Weebly website showcases all the necessary features. The process of creation for my website consisted of, using the elements available and writing brief explanations about myself and my work. An obstacle I encountered in completing my project was having to switch websites in the middle of the project. The Wordpress format wasn't working for me. But that was easily resolved. However, a success was the ease of revising my website because I was happy with the original design. One thing I have learned was how to write a resume.

Although this project taught me a lot, I cannot say that I am an expert. One thing I learned about myself was that I have an abundance of photos, none of them seem to be professional though. If I were to do this again, I would probably make sure I took better photos and spent time gathering information on myself to see what it is I did because I feel that my resume lacks substance. That would have to be my advice to others completing this project. Find substance. It’s hard to create a website if you have nothing to put on it. This project inspired me to complete more projects so I can put them in my website. I feel as if in this project, the message dictated the medium. A website was the best way that I could express myself and have it so that it is easily accessible to the world.

Self Portrait

In this portrait, I chose to recreate an image I sent to a friend as a joke using watercolors. It is an image of me holding glasses in front of my face so that way my mouth looks bigger. I chose a bright yellow background because that is my favorite color and if I am choosing to display myself I want to be surrounded by things that I love. This work represents me as a person in the sense that I am very goofy and a lot of the things I like to do are pointless. However, I love to be creative and bright. I chose to use watercolors because of their ability to be layered. This way it was easy for me to maintain a vibrancy throughout the entire piece. The point was not to create clear precise lines with the paint. I wanted the paint to flow as freely as my thoughts. I then used a very thin, felt-tipped, black marker to outline my teeth and the glasses. This brought just a little more depth to the piece solely for aesthetic.

In order to complete this piece I first had to find a picture to replicate. My friend had made the suggestion to use the last photo I sent to someone. So I drew a sketch of the image in my sketchbook. I then grabbed thicker final papers because I wished to use paint, and I transferred my final design to the paper. I then began to work with the watercolors. I first painted my hair using a brown paint and a yellow color. The yellow mixed with a light brown for depth and then a thin brush with dark brown to add waves and layers to my hair. I then used a flesh tone to evenly shade my skin. Pink for lips, green for the eyes, black for the glasses and finally, bright yellow for the background.

I cannot say that a specific artist inspired this piece, but I will link an artist that I really enjoy which will definitely be influencing my future pieces. I enjoy Eugenia’s style so much and I hope to learn how to create art like her. https://www.flickr.com/photos/eugenia_loli/ . The specific technique required to complete her artwork is the eye for matching photographs together that typically aren’t supposed to go together. The key is to match the style of both images through manipulation to make it appear as if they are supposed to be together even if they clearly are not supposed to be. I am most proud of this work because of my quick ability to learn how to navigate the watercolor paints. The skill I learned through the completion of this project was that the paint to water ratio needs to be more water than paint. This high concentration of water allows for more layering and depth in the work. If I could change one thing, it would have to be the paper we paint on. I wish it was thicker.

Q4 Benchmark for Media and Design

Posted by Lourdes Blazquez in Intro to Design and Multimedia on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 2:02 pm

For this project I created a digital portfolio using a website generator. Here I would display my work I have completed throughout my highschool career in an attempt to get my name out in the world. When I Google my name I don’t find much, so I wanted to put something positive out into the world. I have an About Me page, Projects page, Resume and and Contact page. I think my project for Quarter one was a success because I created an easily accessible, aesthetically pleasing website that showcases my talents as a student. For my second project of the year I chose to take a more political approach. I decided to Photoshop a series of photos of Donald Trump into a Cheeto. I wished to express my feelings regarding the 2017 presidential candidacy. For this project I used Adobe Photoshop. This was a difficult task because the application is not the easiest to learn. But with tutorials and random clicks, I got it. For this project I chose to do 3D modeling. I wanted to learn how to use the application TinkerCad so I could apply this knowledge to other things I was working on outside of school. I decided to play with the shapes to create a chicken shaped coin bank. This project was not about what I created, it was about the process in which I got there. Overall this project was a success, I was able to familiarize myself with this application so that I could design bigger, better things. For my revision I chose to enhance my Quarter 2 image editing project. I chose this project because I wished to enhance the image quality subtly so that it could be that much better. This is by far my favorite project and I wanted to work on it one more time. I used the smudge tool and blur tool to clean up the edges around the edges of the cheeto. I also changed the order of some of the faces and added a orange filter to a few of the images. I feel as if this gave the image a cleaner look and a clearer display of what my image represents. A highpoint of this course in regards to this class is I have become insanely familiar with different applications and their functions. I can say that this class has helped me with tasks I do throughout my school day and extra curricular life. I was apprehensive to be a part of this class at first because it seemed like it was a waste of time, but my expectations were exceeded. This class has forced me to manage my time a little better. Meeting deadlines was harder at first because I was too focused on other classes, but my priorities have changed. I used the 3d Modeling skills I learned in this class in my Digital Fabrication internship at the Franklin Institute. I have to create two hands on activities teaching kids about brain waves. My knowledge of the application TinkerCad allowed me to use their 3d printers to create brains and lasercut wooden cards. An interesting project for next year would have to be something with coding. I think that many people will benefit from this skill and can maybe create applications. TURN IN CHECKPOINTS ON TIME AND COMPLETE. Choose projects that are interesting and challenging. Use the skills from this class to help you with other projects.

You hurt me, and I apologized.

you hurt me, and I apologized.

This is my childhood room, as a child I wasn't one to stand up for myself. I constantly took what was given to me without a word. It was hard for me to find a voice for myself outside of my home. Although I was not really bullied as a child, I felt singled out by both myself and my peers. Up until the sixth grade, I stayed in the foreground, didn't make myself well known. I avoided conflict at all costs. The phrase "you hurt me, and I apologized" comes from all the times I let the words and actions of those around me affect my person. Now I have learned to be my own person. Not everything is my fault. No one can compromise my character. The dead flowers and box labeled trash represents the death of the old me.

Electric Art Project

I chose this bear because this is my childhood stuffed animal. His name is Freny. I got him from Boyd’s Bears outside of Philadelphia. I’ve had him since I was five. Freny has gotten me through a lot and has been through a lot himself. His frayed feet are proof of this. By putting lights around his ears and legs, I’m returning the life he gave to me long ago.

Sla Street art

Posted by Lourdes Blazquez in ART 9 - Hertz - a2 on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 1:23 pm
My artwork is meant to be a PSA. I wanted to shine light on the issue of meme abuse in this world, especially in this day and age. I want to inform people of the help available to meme abusers. The inspiration for my work was my beloved friend named Priscilla. She was a meme addict and needed urgent help. I did some research and came across this ad. This hotlines saved her life. I chose to put this in this location because it is a very common area that a lot of people walk by. I want people to notice my art. This project showed me that immature jokes and pictures on the internet can be art. Street Art does not have to always have meaning, it can just be entertaining. This project made me appreciate the art on the streets more. Before this unit, I would have paid much attention to me rows in the city, now I pay more attention and questioned the author's perspective.

The Internet And You

Posted by Lourdes Blazquez in TECH 1 - Hertz - a1 on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 8:17 am
What you post on the internet can affect how people view you. Whether you are viewed in a negative or positive lights, is entirely up to what you post.

If you work you get money. If you post something inappropriate online and your employer sees this, you will get fired. No job means no money. If you have a significant other, then you are happy. If your girlfriend or boyfriend sees you post something inappropriate on social media, then they wont want to be with you. Removing the happiness from your life.

Ned takes a photograph of him consuming alcohol in his place of work. He decides to post this to Instagram as a joke. Ned's employer sees this and fires Ned. No one wants to hire Ned so he can't make money. His wife leaves him because he has no money. Now Ned is a disappointment.

Think about what you post. What would your mother say if she saw this post? What would your Employer say? Don't be like Ned.

The Internet: A Survival Guide

Posted by Lourdes Blazquez in TECH 1 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 10:26 am

Online I am @call.ofbooty, lackofpizza or lulu. I do not have my full name on my social media sites. I try way too hard to come up with witty captions and take a lot of pictures of myself to make it seem like I have self confidence.

I think people perceive me as a self absorbed white girl. Or maybe a cool, not sure what race she is, lol she looks 12 sometimes and 37 other times, girl. It all depends on the person.

Some things I consider before I post online are,

  • What would my parents think?

  • Do I look trashier than normal?

  • It is a good time of day to post? (more people online= more likes, notes, etc.)

  • Does this match my aesthetic?

Pros of sharing online are allowing all the people who follow you to see all the lovely pictures of coffee, legs, feet, puddles and selfies you post; making online friends who will become more important than real life friends; and having the chance to see what things are like for people around the world. Cons of online sharing are posting dumb things that will haunt you forever; reaching “that” side of tumblr *prays*; and making a name for yourself that may not be great.

Lack of control impacts my life because if I post something and someone saves it (almost immediately, this is called immediacy) , then I no longer have control over what happens from there. So I must be careful. After that post is saved by several people, then that post is permanently on the internet. This is called permanence.

Free speech is, by definition, "
the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint." (-Google). What is protected is anything that allows one to express themselves. But if the form of expression is harmful to others in any way, it is not considered free speech. This is not supported under the Constitution.

Three tips for anyone on the internet:
  • Do not put all your information on the internet. No one but rapists and stalkers care about what school you go to or what part of Philly you're from. No full names are needed, unless you want to be found by employers and your grandma who's having too much fun on Facebook.
  • If you have to contemplate whether or not its a good idea to post something, just don't do it. Like jeez, save yourself while you can.
  • Don't be a h8r m8. That's boring.
