For my quarter 4 project, I choose image editing again. This is the second time I am doing this project in my media design class. But, I decided to tell another story with two different pictures. This time instead of african roots it was about immigration. I edit it a boat and an airplane together because this is the way how immigrants travel to different countries. Also, depending on how you got to your destination overseas you can relate to the picture. So starting this project I thought it was going to be easy again, since it was image editing and I only had to submit two pictures but once I got to checkpoint 2, 3, and 4, I began to use photoshop where I had to  editing the two pictures together and save it as a png etcc. But, midpoint in the project I changed to Pixrl because that was in my chromebook so itwas going to be easier. Then, I came to realize that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be because it was just like Photoshop on a different brand. Some failures I faced during this project was that I forgot along the way how to use photoshop so it was hard to manupilate a little with Pixrl.

So,  it took me back to square one and  it was a little hard for me to edit the two pictures and Pixrl functions a little different then Photoshop. Also, the pictures came out with one background in it unlike when I used Photoshop so I had to go back there to edit again. Some success during this was the story behind the picture and during my presentation I could express myself and explain the picture clearly. This project inspired me to tell another story in the same manner. During this project I did not learn anything about myself really.  If I were fortunated enough to do this project again I will not change anything I will only explore Photoshop and pixrl first and choose a different story. One, important advice that I have for the future people doing this project is that they should explore Photoshop and pixlr first to know what it can do, so they wouldn’t struggle at the end. Finally the tools I used was the magic wand, color changing, and eyedrop tool.

Tobacco in Public Health PSA

Posted by Radiatou Diarra in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 9:17 am

For my final benchmark I choose to focus on tobacco and public health. But first What is public health? Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. And what is tobacco? Tobacco is an agricultural crop, most commonly used to make cigarettes. It is grown all over the world and supports a billion-dollar industry. I decided to focus on tobacco because I felt like all i knew about it was that it was bad and a legal thing, also everyone everywhere smoke. I also know too many people that smoke all I can tell them is that smoking is bad stop smoking but I couldn’t say why. But after this project I learned that the regular cigarette might be safer then the new tools to smoke tobacco. I also know that people think they look cool while smoking by they don’t look really look cool. They are just putting their life in danger. Also the rhular cigarette reduces your life about 11 minute, but the new tools like hookah etcc is high in tar and might be high in nicotine also the chemicals in tobacco. Nicotine is the addictive thing in all cigarettes. Also we all know that smoking is bad I don’t understand why a lot of people still smoke. And why do government make it illegal.

For my senior capstone, I decided to do a club named African  Roots Connection because this club is create a school family for the student through learning about our African cultural roots and this club have every aspect of Africans also we had non -African student who want learn about  African Cultures. Africa is broadly divided in to five as regions but were focused on two regions the East and west African countries history and cultures. Many SLABeeber students have prejudices about life in Africa. They believe people from Africa wear long dresses and all African immigrants cover their heads.  SLABeeber students from Africa have been asked questions like “Why do you cover your head?”, “Why don’t you speak English”, “Do you wear clothes in Africa” and called names like “African Booty Scratcher” and told “Go back to Africa!” and “If you took off your hijab, you’d be pretty”. The best way to help people understand African culture is to teach them about it.   With our African Culture Club, we helped students learn about African cultural clothing and food. We planned activities like attending educational presentations and cooking African food. Our club helped students learn how to make injera, a local African flatbread. Students at SLABeeber now have a better understanding of African culture because we taught them the reasons behind the food we eat and the clothes we wear.  The club members were so surprised to learn why we cover the heads. Our club members know to understand the traditions of Africa.

Air Pollution Project

https://youtu.be/S3VWU3UQ0fI

For our PSA we decided to talk about Air pollution. The reason why I wanted to talk about air pollution is that I knew that many lives were taking by it each year. During my research I learned that 4.6 million people die from Air pollution. So we wanted to bring this to people’s attention. We, also included in our video something that causes air polluted which was the bing truck.

I contributed to the project by my reasearch during chechpoint one and during the script, I also made sure together with my group that we meant everything that was on the rubric.

I think my group did a very good job on the video and the script. I submitted my benchmark late because my group and I did not have a back up plan that if for some reason the editor had some problem finishing our video. We just recorded our scene on the editor’s phone and let him walked away like we were done. So he couldn’t finish the video on time and we couldn’t submit on time either.

So in the future I will make sure that i have a back up plan and not just rrly on only one person to edit the video and send it to me.  The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was I also learned during this process. I learned that I live in a city where air pollution is worse than in the suburbs.

What stood out to me during this project was actually learning about Lead poisoning itself. Before this mini project I did not know what was lead poisoning and or even how it effected people. I've also came to known during my research that I live in a city with very high in lead poisoning and no body had ever warn me about it till now. All I am still wondering is that. How do we save people who are like me and not aware of this? How can they not ignored the symptoms of high lead poisoning? And how do you know when your house was built?

Natural Disasters: Hurricane Irma

Posted by Radiatou Diarra in Environmental Science on Monday, September 9, 2017 at 2:06 pm
Reflection:

The earth system is made of four and a half spheres. Atmosphere: The air that surrounds the earth, Geosphere: The Geosphere is the rocks and minerals of the earth. From hot magma to the sandy beaches, this is all part of the Geosphere, Hydrosphere, and cryosphere: Hydrosphere is made up of all the water on earth, cryosphere is the frozen water of the earth system, and Biosphere: it is composed of all of the living organisms on earth.
Each of these sphere kind of play a role in each other especially when talking about hurricanes. Besides hurricanes destroying people's homes, community, taking individuals lives away they have an impact on the environment as well. Hurricanes also cause strong wind that can completely defoliate forest and cause changes in wooded ecosystems. Animals can be killed by hurricanes or impacted indirectly through changes in habitat and food availability caused by the high winds, storm and the crazy rainfall.

The hard part about this project was remembering the lines and the pronunciations of the words in Spanish. The good part about this project was learning more about ser and estar better. Another good part about this project was my partner and I were able to stay after school and had someone who was recording us.

20150415_131641.jpgWhy did you choice to be a teacher?

This is a very good story I was a Sociologies In a Spanish country in a Latin american country. I got a job in st Diego I worked like a social worker in Diego like homeless family they were living in a out sick like in canyons. I was working with them till I moving into an apartment with someone from Mexico. In part of that I help set up an after school program where I was touring kids. These times were the best part of my day I had fun with the kids I was good at it I felt like I really belong here. At that time I was not married my name was Kara Mullarky. I was trying to decide weather to go back to Philadelphia and go back to school and get teaching degrees and teach kids. But in a second thought that will be a big change and I really love it here but I did not think I had a future here. I was very very poor at that time. One day I went to the library on my way there I said to myself that if I were to become a teacher it will have to be a sign from god. “When I walked in the library I saw a book the title says that Ms. Mullarky can’t be in room one o one today.  The name Mullarky is not a name like. When I saw that I just said to myself it is a sign that I should be a teacher”.

What or who inspired you to come to SLA @ Beeber to teach.

“ Mr.Roy is my husband best friend he is the one who inspired me to come and teach here”. He is the one who told me that he really love it here and the kids are very very smart and that they really want to do work. I wanted to work with kids that wanted to learn. That is the very reason why I choose to teach ESOL or ELL kids because I know that they really want to learn. For example you, you want to learn.

Does your personal life affect your academic life?

I try not to let no “No like never!!! Like never. I never let my personal life affect my school work”. If I had a bad morning at home I try to let that stay at home and if I had a bad day at school I try to let that stay at school and continue on with an happy day. I always try to have to brains one for school and one for home.

I chose this topic because I was watching a show where it said that " many people is calling for a young death by eating junk food a not are not moving a lot". It also said that by " eating a lot of junk food and not exercising your heart is changing color from red to yellow and is not good". So I decided to learn more about and teach others about I learn what I learned.

In the beginning, I wanted to build the circuit in a rose because I love the smell of roses. I even started creating a rose but somehow my little brother messed it up. When I read the project description, I realized that roses meant nothing to me. So I decided to make something that meant a lot to me. You may think I chose to create eggs because I eat them every morning. That is not really why I chose to make the Egg Circuit . I chose to set a circuit on the egg because I used to sell eggs back in Burkina Faso. I used to have chickens that would lay eggs. I would sell the eggs to make some money because back there it did not matter how old you were you could make money. It may sound gross to carefully pick up warm, white eggs laid by a chicken. It is gross but to me the money was the only thing that mattered to me. Back in Burkina Faso chickens and their eggs were life to me because I did not have to bother asking anyone for money I just had my own money.
