During this entire capstone procedure, I experienced lots of ups and downs throughout the entire project. Believe it or not, my whole goal got turned around and created the birth of my newly found idea. The intention of my capstone was to create an annual event for the future of the SLAB community to be able to have fun and enjoy. I illustrated a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for the students to participate in. How the tournament worked was, the first 16 teams that had entered were selected to play. There were a series of rounds that led up to the final championship game. In each of the previous rounds there was a scoring goal of 11, first team to it wins. In the final game the scoring goal increased to 21 in order for each team to get as many opportunities possible. After the winners were announced, each team member earned a unique t-shirt as well as SLAB’s very own ‘Annual 3v3 Tournament Champions’ trophy.
The extremely diverted amount of people that participated in the tournament was what really seemed to amaze me the most. Some people I knew for almost all four years of my high school experience and never knew that had any ounce of passion in them for basketball. From this, I took it as an understatement. Just because someone doesn’t try out for the basketball team does not mean they have no love for it. I learned that some people may even have a nick for something that they’ve never tried before. So for that, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in my event and hope that you’ll be there to continue the tradition.

Q2 Benchmark Final INDIVIDUAL Submission: Video and Reflection

Posted by Shaelin Nixon-Mosee in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 11:57 pm
In my video I talked about the sewage disaster that we have going on in our city, the city of Philadelphia. I discussed how the issue was negatively impacting our community as a whole and the ways that we could successfully terminate the problem. The reason why I chose this topic is because it seems to be a huge problem in Philadelphia considering the fact that it's ruining our clean drinking water system as well as the air that we breath on a day to day basis. I also chose this topic because it's something that interests me.

I did the entire project on my own, just me, myself, and I. Something that I did well was finish the project on my own with the set back that I had of also starting only a week before it was due. Something that I could have definitely did differently was not waste class time or at home time to work on the project. By doing this I could have finished the project in a much timely manner.

The  most meaningful part to me while creating the PSA was giving the great advice that I gave that could help prevent the sewage issue in our city. With that being said, my PSA should help everyone learn to live in a clean environment without a hassle. Stay clean & keep on breathing!

Yellow Stone Wildfire in 1988

Posted by Shaelin Nixon-Mosee in Environmental Science · Aziz · C on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11:14 pm

The earth systems affect one another because the spheres are all part of the same interconnected system, changes in any sphere ultimately affect the other spheres as well. The actions of nature and people changes in all of the other parts of the Earth system.

A disaster management specialist plans and directs programs and procedures for responding to natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Emergency management directors plan responses to emergencies and disasters to minimize risk to people and property. Their plans must comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as established best practices.

Some efforts that could be done in order to create a substantial future are by minimizing resources (some renewable, some not), population, pollution, global warming, species extinction, etc. are some examples.

Interview with Grandmother: Vanessa Smith

Posted by Shaelin Nixon-Mosee in AFRICAN AM HISTORY - Roy - X on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 9:20 am

Abstract

In this interview, Vanessa Anderson-Smith, remember their lives in South Philadelphia. This interview offers more information on the young life of Vanessa Smith as she grew up going to middle school, high school, college, and later onto the real world. She talks about how students of her skin color were treated in middle school, high school, and college. She also talks about her neighborhood friends, how she raised three children of her own and much more.

Research

We drank water from the tap not a bottle and nobody knew about the dangers of lead poisoning so even cribs were painted with brightly colored lead based paint. Medicine and Bottles with tablets did not have child proof lids. No seat belts or air bags in cars, nobody knew or if they did told our parents smoking and drinking was bad for the baby, kids shared coke from one bottle, soda had masses of sugar and we ate real white bread and butter and everything else including full fat milk that we are now told is bad for you. Parents couldn't reach us ( no mobiles ) and most of the day we would be out playing with friends and parents knew we would be safe with hardly any weirdos wandering the streets. If we got caught doing stuff we shouldn't the cops would take us home and we may well have a got a hiding for breaking the law ( but no do gooders saying mustn't smack children ). And if we played up in school the same applied. While playing we got cuts and bruises and the occasional tear in jeans but it was just part of being a kid and no visit to the hospital. We had no fancy games but could play for hours making a Go cart or a new tree swing and for other games most times we would find a ball and whatever we could use as a bat. or in the summer all jump into the nearest place we could find and if the water wasn't that clean we just didn't swallow it. We rode our bikes with no helmets and doing whatever stunts we could ( bikes were so much heavier and hard waring) and always had punctures to repair or get dad to help with. If we didn't get in the team we were not good enough and that was that. But most of all we were allowed to be kids. To dream, to invent and to play. It's no wonder that the generation that grew up then created some of the most innovative and exciting technology we have today. Thanks for those years and all those "BAD THINGS" that is why we are who we are today.

Tips for Teenagers

By: Shaelin, Mukhtar, Charles, Ashley

Based on the I-Search papers that we completed on teenage development, here are some tips for teenagers to help them be happier and to help them develop in positive ways.

  1. all teenage girls are beautiful in their own way they should  not worry about what other people think about their self appearance and just be yourself people will only like you for you they won't like you if you try to be somebody you're not.

  2. I want all the teens growing up not to think that they have a mom that's too old or too young

  3. Teenagers should think twice about making the better choices  in life because the parents won’t get bad if you do the right thing.

  4. My tip is that teenagers need learn how to have better and more control over their lives and the things they do because with the lack of control in their lives, they start to stress out. This also something that they should discuss with their parents or guardians.

How to Shoot a Basketball the Correct Way

Posted by Shaelin Nixon-Mosee in TECH 1 - Hertz - e2 on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 4:31 pm
The reason I chose this topic was because there are a lot of students and even teachers that would like to know how to shoot a basketball the correct way. So I am creating this to help them learn how to shoot a basketball the right way and start to make a higher percentage of their shots. From this info graph I want people to learn to shoot a basketball the correct way.

Physics Artist Statement

Tyrone Hart & Shaelin Nixon

January 9, 2015

For our project, Shaelin and I built a model of a rocket and included a launching pad. Our original plan was to make a basketball, but we thought. This school has been so good to us throughout the year, so why not make a model of it? Well making a model of the school would take a little too much construction, also a few of our classmates already had that idea. So we decided to make a the symbol of our school. A rocket. Although we didn’t have all the supplies to make it look perfect and we aren’t very good artist, we made the best of what we could find and tried our hardest to make it look good.

On this project we created “THE ROCKET” is a unique bottled rocket with lights at the bottom. This rocket symbolizes our school mascot. It represents our school, That is the reason we created it. We also created this because we both would like to be engineers when we grow up and rockets involve a lot of engineering to build them so we’d like to make rockets later on.

A Picture Worth a Thousand Words

There are multiple reasons why I chose this image. One reason why I chose it is because this picture really is worth 1000 words. It shows great power and is states its topic very clearly. I think if anyone were to see this image they'd know right away that this is an image of cyber-bullying. Don't be a victim of it!
