Zaina Belgrave Capstone

In this project me and my partner decided to explore mental health and how it affects high school students. To do this we researched mental health and how it relates to teenagers. Then we interviews people asking them "their lowest point in high school?". They went well and we learned that a lot of kids suffer from mental health issues. I learned that people go through different things in their lives and not everyones experience is the same.

In our video we talk about HIV. It starts off with a skit of an HIV support group meeting and then transitions to us doing research on our own. We talk about what HIV is and how it affects your body. We also talk about different ways to contract HIV and how it affects different parts of the economy. I contributed a lot to the project. I did research and wrote the script for the video. I also provided a lot of direction for my group. I feel like I did well on the content of the checkpoints but I could have managed my time more. The ending of the PSA was really a good part because its just really nice.

In our project we researched how the sport we chose, track, is related to what we are learning about in class. Which is anatomy. We researched what muscles are being used and different injuries that can occur. We also looked at how injuries can be prevented.

Oil Spills

Posted by Zaina Belgrave in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:45 am

In this video me and my team of experts walk around the school asking people what they know about oil spills. They know nothing so we take it upon ourselves to create a video education people about oil spills. We tell them about how they happen, the affects on the environment and then clean up and further steps that could be taken. We chose this topic because people never really learned oil spills in school and it was just a topic I personally wonder about.

I contributed to the project by helping to write the script. Also coaching everyone on what to say a long with filming and editing the video together.

I think I filmed and all the editing for the project went really well for me. I feel like I could've taken the script more seriously.

The most meaningful part of creating this PSA was the freeze frame at the end.

Global Water Issues

Posted by Zaina Belgrave in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 12:27 am
While doing this assignment I learned that many people are suffering around the world because they do not have access to clean water. There are diseases they are more prone to because they do not have toilets. That is something that really stood out to me because I never really think of having a toilet as a privilege and it just really caused me to think about the amount of things that are in my life that are privileges. I also feel as though this is an environmental justice issue because waters are being polluted and it affects no only humans but animals too.

Automotive Industry

Posted by Zaina Belgrave in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 11:18 pm

The earth systems affect each other because they are all connected. A lot of materials flow through all the spheres. For example water goes in all the spheres but it takes on different forms. Along with carbon and many other things.

If you know how a natural disaster works and what systems it affects you will be better equipped in what to do when said event happens.

We can all try to decrease our ecological footprint because we use a lot of earths resources everyday. This way we can slow down.

W.A.L.L and Tsunamis

1. Earth systems affect each other because they are constantly transferring energy one way or another. They are interconnected.
2. If someone understands why natural disasters happen they can better prepare for it because they know what causes it and know how to look for the signs.
3.We can build better buildings that can withstand natural disasters and also set up more places for people to go while they occur.

Jake Gyllenhall and Heath Ledger

Posted by Zaina Belgrave in Art 2 · Hertz · C1 on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 9:02 am
The piece I created is a greyish white mountain that covers a lot of the bottom half of the page. The mountain has trees scattered throughout it. The trees are light green and light brown. There are not that many on the mountain but they are there. Then there is a darkish sky that is also light. It connects with the mountain. In the sky, there are brown birds. They are a darker color and are also scattered throughout the mountain. I want my work to communicate that this could be somewhere in the world, anywhere. Also, that nature is a valuable part of life and that life is simple and not everything is perfect but it still is something. To create this artwork I used watercolor and a variety of brushes. For the mountain, I used a pretty standard brush and mixed black and white to create my grayish color for my mountain. For my trees, I mixed a dark brown with a green to create the color for my bark. For my leaves, I just took a standard green and used a fan brush to create these evergreen-like trees. For my sky, I mixed a really dark blue with some white and painted her on. Some techniques I used were like quick side strokes for the trees. The rest was regular painting.
My current work relates to my previous work because all my work starts off with a plan and it usually does not go according to the plan because I mess up but then it turns out okay. Also, most of my work has a sky. I’m proud of my birds and the trees that I made. I would change the way the mountain curves because I do not like it.

The artist that inspired me is van-Gough because his work is a lot of scenery and trees and mountains. I think it does not really reflect his work but in my eyes it does.

For this Biochem project me and my group decided to create an ocean and show the different ways that humans negatively affect this biome. I learned a lot from making this project. Academically and creatively that is. Academically I learned that humans cause a lot of pollution and there are simple ways to prevent this from happening but it keeps on going. I also learned about different kinds of pollution and how it affects the animals. Creatively I learned that I am not an artist and I can not sculpt. The creative process took a while because of all the things that needed to be done that seemed minor but were actually crucial to the project. For example positioning the fish properly and painting things that I did not think needed to be painted. I chose this topic because the ocean is one place that humans cannot live in but somehow we still find a way to mess up this part of the world.

Mountain Day

In my art work there are many different colors used to represent things. The bottom of the work has like a brown mass that is supposed to represent water. Then there are pink type clouds that has a mountain structure in the middle of it. There is also this blue wind sweeping over the mountain. The sun is a blue circular figure to the side in the corner. I want the work to communicate whatever the person feels looking at it. The wind, ocean, sun and mountain can represent different things to a person while looking at it. For the painting I used a block of wood as my canvas. I used tempera paint, newspaper and acrylic paint. The tempera paint was used for like everything and layered of the newspaper for part of the ocean and the sun. The acrylic paint was used to make “snow” on top of the mountain and used to add some white details in the ocean. My current work is like my previous work because both of them are like whimsical in a way. In both works nothing is supposed to be the color that it is. The process involved for my work first started off with me making an outline on the wood for what I wanted the painting to look like. As i began painting with the outline I quickly realized I did not like and another vision popped into my head. So I started off with painting the ocean and the mountain was a leftover thing from my previous vision. So I added a sun using newspaper for texture.

I do not know an artist who makes similar work to me. I don’t get inspired by other people I just go with the flow of things. One technique I used working with tempera paint is layering. This was really useful to get colors to pop. I am most proud of completing because I thought I would never finish. If I could change one thing I would change maybe the color of the sun. I learned that even if there is a plan you don’t have to strictly follow it if you change your mind.

Final Art Project Q1

My artwork contains a faded green hill on the right hand side of the paper and it overlaps the darker green hill on the left hand side of the paper. Above the hills is a reddish purple color for the sky and then there are three clouds. They are outlined in black and are colored with purple and blue for a blended look. Coming out of the cloud on the right there is a head with their brain exposed. The brain is the same color as the lower portion of the sky and the person is looking at the grey moon and the yellow stars in the sky. The sky above is a light red that is fading out. I want my work to communicate my hope that I had to visit space. The person is coming out of the clouds because their head is in the clouds making it a dream like state. Which is why the sky is red when the moon and stars are out. It is not reality.

To make this artwork I used colored pencils, a black sharpie and pastels. I used the black sharpie to outline everything and the colored pencils and pastels to color in everything else. To make this work I drew the picture on the canvas and started off using colored pencils to color the clouds and then I realized there were pastels. I began to use the pastels for everything and blended them with my finger. One technique I used was blending with my finger and it really helped bring everything together. I am most proud of the clouds in my work. One thing I would change is the outline of everything in black. I learned that pastels aren’t as easy as they seem to use.
