For this Biochem project me and my group decided to create an ocean and show the different ways that humans negatively affect this biome. We learned that humans cause a lot of pollution and there are simple ways to prevent this from happening but it keeps on going. I also learned about different kinds of pollution and how it affects the animals. The creative process for this took a while because of all the things that needed to be done that seemed minor but were actually crucial to the project. This topic was chosen this topic because the ocean is one place that humans cannot live in but somehow we still find a way to mess up this part of the world.

For our quarter 4 benchmark we focused on researching Ecosystem Interactions. This being how the climate changes that arecause by humans are affecting the producers which will soon harm the cosumers and ourselves. In this project we go into detail about everything you should know about it. Throughout this project that was something that caught my eye, this was because it was so fasinating to see how humans could cause so much damage to the places they live without even knowing it. Something that I’m curious about is when will it all stop? Though we talk about major things in our project, what we say may not get out there fully and be most likely won’t stop doing thing to harm our enviroment. So when will it stop for good?

Ecology Benchmark

During this unit I was able to expand my knowledge about ecosystem interactions. I learned about the topic in eight grade and I haven’t touched upon it sense then. Being able to be reminded was really helpful because this was something that I could have needed to remembered for any testing about this topic. Some key points that stood out to me about this unit is the three types of interactions which are mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Also remembering about the difference between abiotic and biotic factors. These stood out to me the most because they are two of many things that make up a ecosystem. While learning this unit I want to get more into what the decomposers do in a ecosystem. We know that they play a role and we know what they do, but we don’t actually go any deeper than that. I want to know what factors can affect the decomposers in any ecosystem. Overall I enjoyed making this poster even though it took hours to make. I’m glad about how much I was able to take from this unit.

Ocean Pollution Biome

Posted by Ayanna Russell in Biochemistry 2 Honors on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 1:34 am

It was a surprise to know oil spills were still happening in our oceans and that plastic was harming the animals. There are so many toxic industries who make money from destroying the land and this severely affects marine life in all of the ocean. There is also bacteria growing on the ocean's surface such as algae that could affect the amount of sunlight that reaches into the ocean which affects how other plants grow in the ocean. Mining for materials such as copper and gold is a major source of contamination in the ocean because copper is a major source pollutant and can interfere with the life cycle of numerous ocean animals. It worries me a lot that our oceans are being polluted because this is water we need, they are the piece keeping our land together. They produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere and absorb the carbon from it. The carbon will eventually grow out of control and our oceans won’t be able to consume so much then still be a reliable oxygen source. I am also worried about the animals. Tortoise have been found with straws up their nose, around their neck and it’s really heartbreaking to see that this is the heart of humans. We have grown so high and mighty within ourselves that its forgotten we need the world around us to even be who we are, we are destructive of our own kind. I wonder why humans lack so much care about an environment they live in. It is difficult to make a change in a mass community when you are the only one who wants to make that change. Climate change has grown to be so important to me, I want to be apart of a better world, I want to breathe better air, I want to save the Earth but when there are obstacles around you prepared to constantly destroy what you fix, it’s a pain to try again. I think this is why we give up but I want to teach youth like myself to do this. I wonder how the world will survive in the years to come if humans don’t find it necessary to change their behavior. This project is a model of the oil spill that took place April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico.

In this benchmark we focused on the Cycles of Matter and the effects it has on our planet. In the video you will learn the problems it has had with ecology. What mainly stood out to me is that fact that we can do something to solve this. We can work on making our world a better place for us to live in.

Biochem 2 Quarter 2 Project

Ecosystem Response to ChangeEcosystem Response to Change https://youtu.be/Ek6uk9WWi0M In this video my group and I give you a quick representation of how a population can be effected by polution. In most cases the population with the most people as well as a rapid rate of reproducing seems to suffer the most when it comes to pollution and this is because with more people comes the usage or creation of more products and since you have a heavily populated area you wouldn't want them waiting on food so you will try to find a way to speed up the process, but speeding it up does more harm. This can be seen in the video when The guy who offers us food (Jorge) offers us food and he talks about how quick he made it, and right after that Pollution (Jorge) comes and messes me and leon up, stuffing our lungs with bad air.

For our Q4 benchmark we focused on the Cycles of Matter and why it’s a problem within ecology. Our video shows where this problem happens, how we affect the different cycles and what we can do to stop it. What stood out to me is the things that affect the cycles. Everyday things that I had no idea affected our lives. I’m curious to know if this issue will get better or worse.

For this Biochem project me and my group decided to create an ocean and show the different ways that humans negatively affect this biome. I learned a lot from making this project. Academically and creatively that is. Academically I learned that humans cause a lot of pollution and there are simple ways to prevent this from happening but it keeps on going. I also learned about different kinds of pollution and how it affects the animals. Creatively I learned that I am not an artist and I can not sculpt. The creative process took a while because of all the things that needed to be done that seemed minor but were actually crucial to the project. For example positioning the fish properly and painting things that I did not think needed to be painted. I chose this topic because the ocean is one place that humans cannot live in but somehow we still find a way to mess up this part of the world.

Q4 Benchmark FINAL SUBMISSION: Ecology

Posted by Dejah Watts in Biochemistry 2 Honors on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 10:42 pm

For this project, my group and I decided to show the effects of trash, pollution, and overfishing on wildlife. The biggest takeaway from this was that it doesn't seem like anything is happening to protect these creatures that are getting harmed by our actions. So to me, it was just really important to show the beauty of the ocean, but also show how we ruin it.
