Mercury Exposure

Posted by Chelby Elam in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 12:51 pm
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_rkOeqrRcw

In our PSA video we talked about Mercury Exposure, we were interested in this topic and chose it because we've never heard about Mercury Exposure before and wanted to learn more about what is it and what it does. I contrubuted in the project by helping with research, editing the video and helping with our script. I think what we could have done differently was make our scipt flow and make a little more ense for our psa. The most meaningful part of this was learning about mercury exposure and the harms it causes.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

Posted by Chelby Elam in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 12:45 am

We created a power point for our visual as we researched our natural disaster. The natural disaster we researched were sinkholes. A sinkhole is a natural disaster where a giant hole forms in the ground. It’s usually caused by collapse in the surface layer, erosion, or underground water. Sinkholes can be natural or man made. Sinkholes affect the hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. From this we learned that all of the Earth systems are connected. If something bad happens to one it probably affects another one in a bad way. Our understanding of environmental science can aid in handling natural disasters because we know how the earth and its systems work and why these things happen. From that we can figure out what to do when these things happen. To create a sustainable future, we should cut down on trash that’s created, we can continue to find different modes of transportation and keep our underground updated by fixing things like water mains.

Ecology Benchmark

For our Q4 benchmark we focused on the Cycles of Matter and why it’s a problem within ecology. Our video shows where this problem happens, how we affect the different cycles and what we can do to stop it. What stood out to me is the things that affect the cycles. Everyday things that I had no idea affected our lives. I’m curious to know if this issue will get better or worse.

Comparative Anatomy in Evolution Benchmark

Posted by Chelby Elam in Biochemistry 2 Honors on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:10 pm
While doing this project, I learned more about the evolution of certain animals and their similarities. For our benchmark we researched and compared the Skeletal Systems of an Earthworm, Frog, European Rabbit and a Human. When researching each of their skeletal structures, they were all similar in some form. The worm had no skeletal structure, but it had segments that gave it its posture. The Frog, European Rabbit and Human all had spines. Other findings showed that the Frog did not have a rib cage, and only the European Rabbit and Human have rib cages.

Overall I enjoyed doing this project. My favorite part was researching how the different animals had similar skeletal funct structures. The topic of Evolution tends to stay interesting the more you learn about it and i'm excited to keep learning about it.

"I run so I feel good." is my 6 word memoir.  I have come to the conclusion that if I go a day or two without running I feel horrible. I like it and when ever I do run I feel really good when i'm done. So I run to feel good physically and I run because i'm doing something i'm not that bad at doing. My room reflects my memoir because I have a poster in it that says "Not Running Sucks" which is very true.

Electric Art Project

Posted by Chelby Elam in PHYSICS 1 - Gray - D on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 2:47 pm

The sculpture I chose to use for my Electric Art Project was my tripod. I chose my tripod because I like taking pictures and I wanted to make something light up other than using my camera. I only do two things, and that is running and taking photos. I thought that my tripod would be perfect because I use it to take my pictures and I wanted to do something other than talking about running.

Justice Will Prevail

The meaning of my artwork “Justice Will Prevail” is that if anyone does something wrong they will eventually get punished for what they did. I got the quote from an anime I watched called Death Note and I really liked the quote.

What inspired my art was that I really liked the quote. What inspired the design of my art was the logo of this college called “The New School”. Their logo was a red background and the name of their school was written in white with two white lines under it. My artwork was the quote “Justice Will Prevail” with a white background , red letters, and two black lines under it

I chose the location I chose because no one else’s street art was in that area and I thought it would be easy to notice.

This project changed my perception of art by telling me that art can be anything and nothing is wrong when you're drawing art.

This project changed my perception of art I see as I travel around the city by making me look around to see different art while i'm on the street.

The Internet And You

Posted by Chelby Elam in TECH 1 - Hertz - e2 on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 9:12 am

  1. The first slide is how overusing the internet can get me distracted from important things. Getting distracted by it causes you to be online more and also a bigger chance of making a mistake that you will regret.

  2. The second slide is how I try to be positive online and post appropriate things. I do this so people can maybe take me as an example and be positive and post appropriate things because people can be watching. I like to run too so maybe they could also post about a hobby they really like too.

  3. The last slide is titled “think”. I want people to think of what their about to post online before they post it. I want them to know that anyone could be watching them and it could stay online forever.

Social Media Survival Guide

Posted by Chelby Elam in TECH 1 - Hertz - e2 on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 1:56 pm

Online I appear as a girl who has a lot social media and is associated with programs and sports such as cross country and Project Flow at the Fairmount waterworks.I think people perceive me as a busy person who looks really nice. They might perceive me as busy because i'm in a lot of programs.I consider who can be watching what I post online and people who see it might not like what I post, so i'm cautious on what I post online. A pro from sharing online is that you can get yourself out there. Some cons are that people can stalk you and you may post the wrong thing and important people might not like that. Lack of Control, Permanence, and immediacy have an impact on our online lives because when we post we're getting ourselves out there. I think social media background checks is a great idea, if I was an employer , I would like to get a feel of who I might consider hiring. Freedom of Speech is protected by the First Amendment.  Religion, speech, press, petition, and assembly are protected by the First Amendment. What isn’t protected by the First Amendment is obscenity, child pornography, true threats, fighting words, incitement to imminent lawless action, criminal solicitation or defamation. An internet troll is a person online who starts arguments and they upset people. The goals of an internet troll is to annoy people and make them mad. You can stop trolling by possibly ignoring them because that means they didn’t reach their goal of annoying you. Some pros of posting anonymously online is that people don't know it’s you and if you say something wrong they still don’t know it’s you. The cons of posting anonymously online is that you say something really good but someone can take the credit and act like they thought of it. My 3 tips for someone who uses social media is Be safe, Be cautious of what your post, and Ignore trolls.
