Reflection: I discovered a lot about ALS through this project. I found out how ALS affects the motor neurons. During my research, I found out that a brain cell called microglia, which is the first and primary immune response cells in the brain and spinal cord. Through the many researchers and funding, I always wondered how close are we to finding the cure. Researchers have concluded that motor nerve cells use C9ORF72 protein to build lysosomes–which are cellular compartments used to engulf and break down toxic proteins and other garbage so if this is one of the keys to create a mutation in order to develop ALS, then is it quite possible to prevent this?

ALS and the CNS

Posted by Jacqueline Shepherd in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:20 pm

Reflection: It was very interesting after learning about the central nervous system and then investigating a disease that degrades the system. ALS is a degenerative disease that primarily affects motor neurons. In the brain, the motor cortex is in the frontal lobe of the brain. ALS includes the slow loss of motor function and takes a short time to fully manifest. The body can regenerate cells but it can't brain cells can't grow back. If the brain is the control center why can't its tissues heal or regenerate?

Before stating this project i knew a bit about alzheimer's, but after doing over 2 weeks of research i knew a lot more than when i started. This a common problem that a lot of people have and now i am more informed on this topic.

We learned somethings about the body and about how Alzheimer affects your body. We learned why sometimes you get it and what are ways you can try to avoid it. Some times they say you cant avoid it.

Reflection:

I learned a lot about how ALS can target the motor neurons in the brain and completely affect the way the body achieves homeostasis as a result. I wonder why it has been so difficult to find effective treatment and even a cure for ALS and how researchers are pushing the limits of our technology and knowledge in search of one.

Alzheimer's Human Anatomy Benchmark

I knew a bit about Alzheimer's before but since doing this project I've really come to understand the root causes of the disease and why it exists. My rough understanding of the disease was nothing compared to what Alzheimer's truly is. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1wAcXzhPeZkFmjWKjH2SL_B1dSHgOL2ZPWKo_Wce7pdo/edit?usp=sharing

The major thing that I learned is the transmitters in our brains. The levels of opioid released in your brain when you eat can change based on if you are obese or not. I found it interesting how we can feel "good" when we first taste unhealthy food but once its processed our emotions change.
