Reproductive Health PSA

Posted by Jacqueline Shepherd in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:58 am

In summary, our PSA is about reproductive health, what is being researched, how women are affected and how it is treated in politics. The cause of these issues surround the political views, religious views and how clinics and research are funded. Under healthcare, some things are treated but many issues that affect women more are not covered by insurance or Medicare. Politicians and people are pushing for restrictions on abortions and this affects the number of clinics in a state. Those clinics are very important to the surrounding area because they offer screenings for cervical and breast cancer. They help expecting mothers and offer contraceptives to those who want them. The defunding of those clinics cause a lot more damage to a community because of a person's view of what a woman can do with her body.

I helped with creating the interview questions and arranging the interview with Dr. Driscoll. I also helped with the recording and I edited the video and audio together. I think it came out well, except I would have picked a quieter place to record. This is an important issue because it affects me and the access I have to be healthy. I believe that women should have options planned parenthood offers. The most important part of this project was listening to someone in a professional field talk about the concerns about how the issue is being treated. How different states have different laws that make it extremely hard or impossible for them to make their own choices about their body.

Jacqueline Shepherd Capstone

When I was initially thinking about what to do for this capstone I was considering the idea of an informative display about greenhouse gas. In addition to information about the effects of greenhouse gases, I wanted to include alternatives. For this project, I decided to inform people about the 5 contributing sectors, transportation, agriculture, industry, electricity, and forestry.  I gather the information about what makes up each sector and how much it contributes and how.

Then I began to consider how I wanted to present this information. I started with wanting to create a model city with information printed or engraved on building and streets. Then I worked down that idea to each section a dedicated box with background information, examples of contributors and alternative to help reduce emissions. I used adobe illustration to make the layout of the box and the laser cutter to cut and engrave the text. In addition, I  used fusion 360 to add in 3D models of the examples to accompany the information.

The information about the specific sectors and about how much of a populated city can contribute to carbon emissions was learned. It was informative to talk about the forestry and agriculture sectors because of how trees and plants affect O2 levels and how reliant this country is on agriculture. I also learned how to create a project from of my own idea with the objective of teaching something specific.

ALS and the CNS

Posted by Jacqueline Shepherd in Biology of the Human Body · Aziz · C on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:20 pm
Reflection: It was very interesting after learning about the central nervous system and then investigating a disease that degrades the system. ALS is a degenerative disease that primarily affects motor neurons. In the brain, the motor cortex is in the frontal lobe of the brain. ALS includes the slow loss of motor function and takes a short time to fully manifest. The body can regenerate cells but it can't brain cells can't grow back. If the brain is the control center why can't its tissues heal or regenerate?

  • Question: If you could go any where in the world where would it be, and why?
  • Answer: I would want to to Italy because a lot of my family is from there so I would love to go visit it and see it with my other cousins Nina and Julia and I just think it would be a really nice place to see.

  • Question: What is one of your earliest memory?
  • Answer: I have a lot of early memories such as one of the walking by the tv and seeing Hamtaro on. I remember things like when my brother was born and playing i spy with my grandmum.

  • Question: What was one of the happiest moments of you life?
  • One of the happiest moments... so I really I cant really pick one happiest moment but I really enjoy you know when I have a good time with my friends. I also really liked getting my cat because I had to do so much research and stuff to prove to my parents that I was responsible enough to have a cat. So when we finally got her which was a surprise and I was just so happy about that.

Question: What is your earliest memory?

Answer: One of my earliest memories is growing up in Virginia on a tobacco farm and enjoying running around the farm and being able to enjoy all the fruits and vegetables I wanted from the garden.

Question: What is one of the most important lessons you have learned in life?

Answer: Wow. Do onto others as others as you would have others do on to you I think for me being a people person has been a very valuable lesson for me. Being kind to people even when people are not kind to me and forgiving people easily and right away which is not always easy but I get there.

Question: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Answer: I think it would be to the Caribbeans and it would be for pure pleasure of lying on the beach sipping on strawberry daiquiris and earning income from some form of business venture while lying on the beach.

We picked a poet and wrote a mini biography about them then we wrote a shot one about ourselves as well. We also choose a poem that they wrote and we liked and talked about the poem. Then based on the themes in the poem we wrote our own.

Sea Giants Infographic

Posted by Jacqueline Shepherd in TECH 1 - Hertz - a1 on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 9:44 am
I decided to make an infograph on sea giants because they fascinate me. Knowing that these animals thrive in waters that we can't even get a camera down to is amazing. Just thinking that the Colossal squid was only discovered 90 years ago, within some one's life time, only because of another animal who was washed up. I would just want people to learn about how much we still need to discover about the deep sea's.

Our electric art project By Jacqueline And Alyssa

The objects we chose to use in our project were a cardboard flower which Jacqueline created, and a protist stuffed animal which Alyssa created. We chose to use these things because we wanted to use projects created in school that were meaningful to us. We decided to place the protist stuffed animal on Jacqueline’s flower sideways, so that we could set the flower down when lit. We tied the stuffed animal to the flower using the protist’s strings, because glue or staples might have ruined the flower, and tape would not work.

Lights were placed in the center of the flower to make it stand out, and lights were placed on the “ears” of the protist to allow it to stand out in the dark. The bright colors of the protist contrast the the brown cardboard of the flower, though in the dark it needed something to stand out, with all of the lights in the flower. It almost resembles a koala or cat resting on a flower. Its whiskers resemble a cat’s, though on the flower it could be mistaken for a koala climbing a tree.

The flower represents hidden beauty, because even though it has duller colors, it is still a beautiful flower. The protist stuffed animal was shaped like a type of animal on purpose, to represent Alyssa’s love of animals. Combined, this creates a project with a deeper meaning. Even though at first glance you may not be able to tell what the project is, but once you hear the story behind you may come to understand the true meaning behind the project.

A Picture Worth A Thousand Words~Jacqueline

I decided to choose this image because I wanted to show different people working on computers not necessarily think about who is going to read their work.  I wanted to show a small number of people that have the privilege to use the internet and do most things on it.  The message I am trying to tell is that one should consider that other could find the content not appropriate or just offensive. I am not saying that everything that's posted is insulting one person or group of people. I just wanted to say think about what you are posting before you post it.
