My name is Justin Gatewood and for my senior capstone, I decided to begin my own workout journey, also creating an informational website for others to take inspiration from and gain knowledge. Mostly all my life, I’ve always been the smallest, weakest link and have always wanted to get into bettering my body to build up my confidence and ultimately feel better about myself. First, I had to thoroughly educate myself on the topic before jumping in because I knew virtually nothing about working out or fitness in general. I found many reputable sources all over the internet throughout my journey and am glad to be educated on it, though I wouldn’t call myself an expert. I found and created a workout plan that worked for me and on the way purchased things that helped me, such as dumbbells, pre-workout powders, and protein powders. Honestly, I didn’t put on as much muscle or weight as I wanted to but I’m still happy with my results. Working out is something I’ve always wanted to get into my whole life, but just never had the motivation or knowledge to do. When I really got into it, I realized it was fun and felt rewarding, even when I didn’t see any progress. I feel like this is something that I should’ve gotten into a long time ago and I’m happy that I finally did. Overall, I am happy with what I’ve accomplished and what I will continue to do, and I’m glad I have found an outlet to share it with others through my capstone.
My name’s Qawyyah Powers and for my senior project/Capstone I decided to do a Stop the violence teen pop-up shop. Throughout my project, I have been working diligently to get everything together. I’ve handpicked every single vendor either by friends or by request. One of my friends helped to create our Pop-Up Shop flyer; he was very respectful and understanding of every detail that needed to be changed. I’ve also been working with Dimplez 4 Dayz as they’ve helped me perfect every detail of my Pop-Up Shop. I was also In contact with both Council Member Gauthier and Brooks to see If they’d be Interested In speaking to the youth about the violence within our city.
On April the 9th I finally got to host my pop-up shop and honestly It was an amazing experience, I was finally able to see my dream become a reality. The amount of support that I and the other vendors received brought me joy. In my opinion, It was very successful and I enjoyed every last minute of It. The only sad part was that Councilwomen Brooks couldn’t make It due to a funeral. However, I and Council Women Gauthier were able to speak and I was able to tell my story which I could tell hit home for most.

I believe that I can gain a broader perspective on the college experience, get to meet other young people who share my zest for technology and social media and participate in a program that will allow me challenge my knowledge and learn something new. I am constantly searching for youtube videos, tutors and apps that will help me understand a math problem. However, I know that I have to put in the extra work to accomplish my goal and at my high school there are several teachers and resources to assist me in math. Not every student, especially black and brown students, are able to receive the needed support to make them feel confident in science and math. Hence, I believe this has a major impact on why there is a lack of diversity within the STEM community.
