Have you ever been late to class? Have you ever gone to the wrong class by accident? Well, you are not alone many SLA Beeber students have been in your shoes too many to count. Most of us have had to go to class at one point or another and we all have learned to adapt but for other students adapting ay not come easy. Maps have been used throughout history to pinpoint locations and to give humans an easy and most accessible path through the discovered territory. If you are a freshman, troubled student, or adult Science Leadership Academy at Beeber is the new territory that you must explore and I will grant you a map to help you in your quest.

SWBAT - Have an understanding of the Science Leadership Academy at the Beeber Building. Most Importantly you will understand why a map is so important for SLA students instead of just numbers on a sheet of paper.

Lucas Drinen - Composting Capstone

Posted by Lucas Drinen in Senior Capstone · Schaar on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 6:28 pm

Abstract

Our capstone project focused on how we as individuals and communities can less our carbon footprint and environmental burden. SLA Beeber, like many other high schools, produces an astronomical amount of food waste. Food waste makes up a significant percentage of waste in landfills. We decided to combat this by implementing a compost system. We met with Ms. Sasso to formulate a plan for this project. Our plans changed drastically over the past few months. At first, we planned to acquire funding to purchase proper compost bins and distribute the compost at the end of the year. Unfortunately, we could not secure the necessary funding and had to create our own 0010 makeshift bins. These bins are located in Ms. Sasso’s and Mr. Kucewicz’s rooms. They are equipped with informative signs (on what is compostable), and mini-compostable trash bags. Once filled, the content of the bins is disposed to the compost tumbler outside. We also were not able to distribute the compost due to weather-related issues. Even though we could not produce any compost, our project resulted in a fully functioning compost system with a guide for future staff and students. Now that we have laid out the framework, all the SLA Beeber community needs to do is follow in our footsteps. Throughout the process of this project we learned more about how our school community functions, and the various ways that we as students can make a lasting impact.

Digitized Project:

Two slide presentations (a guide, and show and tell) serve as the digitized version of our project. Our full presentation is embedded at the bottom as well. They contain all of the pictures and videos taken.

If you are interested in composting at SLA Beeber, take a look at the slides below!

Salena Witmer Dance Runs the World

Posted by Salena Witmer in Senior Capstone · Schaar on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 8:55 am

Many aspects are represented in our project, including history, sisterhood, black culture, dancing, and more. Sanai and I agreed to teach black female dance routines as part of a mini-course, as well as the history of dance in black culture. We also decided to give the pupils short lectures on the history of dancing. We’ve demonstrated two separate routines, each with its own style and difficulty level. We are quite proud of our pupils for their ability to learn these routines and demonstrate their personality and style at each rehearsal. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next. They’ve also devised their own routine based on the five ideals we teach them at each practice. We’ve also had numerous discussions regarding events in our town and how they affect our dance life, as well as our lives in general. We are always forceful in how we discuss these topics with our students so that they understand they can speak up and utilize their voices to make a difference in their communities. Dance is one of the numerous ways that change has been brought about. We want our pupils to be proud of themselves and to be concerned about one another. As teachers, we have worked hard and made mistakes, but our kids have demonstrated that our efforts have paid off. We hope that they remember what we told them.
