Tower Garden Photo Journal Project

Posted by Moesha Grant in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10:46 am

Before I was given, this project I never knew that planting actual food was possible to do indoors. From all the Ted Talks we watched in class, I realized aeroponic gardening could be a revolution for our society. This could help people deal with the harsh effects of climate change. Tower gardening in class was so much easier and cleaner than gardening outside. Our plants started to show results within a day even though our peppers haven’t grown yet. The only downfall with Tower Gardening is affording the equipment. It’s more feasible for people to afford materials to garden outside than all the materials it takes to tower garden. Tower garden has become a new option for gardening because of the issue of sustainability in the environment. Lately, because of changing climate patterns plants have not been able to grow in sustainable environments. The continuation of burning fossil fuels have contributed to making our environment unsustainable.

Often unhealthy lifestyles have been presented in our societies. In poverty stricken neighborhoods, good insecurities are present and these unhealthy food options are proposed as solutions. Tower gardening is trying to defeat unhealthy living in these neighborhoods. I think aeroponic gardening is great, but the cost of it needs to be fixed so it can available to everyone.

Our Garden Observations & Questions

Plants

Observations/questions

Peppers (Nick)

What color will the peppers be? I observed my pepper seeds were really small. I noticed the vermiculite had to fill over half the hole and I wonder why?

Marketmore Cucumber (Imani)

How long will it take for the cucumbers to sprout? My seed were oval like.  I also observed that the cucumber seeds were relatively smaller than I expected them to be.

The lettuce is currently growing but I don’t see any cucumbers sprouting

My lettuce is currently still sprouting and getting bigger but i still don’t see any cucumbers

I wonder when the cucumbers will start to grow?

The ph balance in our water has dropped

Gourmet Lettuce (Jada)

Why are gourmet lettuce seeds so small? I had to fill my hole differently than everyone else’s because my seeds were smaller. The pH balance of the water is very high.

The lettuce is the only plant that’s growing somewhat.

The tomatoes and the peppers haven’t started to sprout yet.

The cucumbers started to grow as well as the tomatoes.

The lettuce has grown a lot and so has the cucumbers and tomatoes. The peppers haven’t grown at all.

Beefsteak Tomato (Moesha)

1/10/17

How will these large tomatoes grow in a small indoor environment?

I realized the tomato seeds were small compared to the actual size of the tomato when it grows. Each of my group members and I had to plant two seeds each except for Jada and her gourmet lettuce.

1/13/17

The lettuce is the only plant currently sprouting.

When will the tomatoes sprout?

1/17/17

The lettuce has sprouted and so did the cucumbers.

Unfortunately, the tomatoes and peppers haven’t sprouted.

When will the peppers and tomatoes sprout?

1/24/17

The pH balance of the water went from 7.0 to 6.5.

The cucumbers are growing the fastest.

The peppers have still not grown and I wonder why?

I hope my tomato plant doesn't get intertwined with the lettuce.

Air Pollution

Posted by Imani Washington in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 10:00 pm

We made our video to inform people and give them a deeper knowledge about what's going on around them. Our topic of focus was air pollution. I contributed to our group by writing lines for our script and recording my various parts throughout the video. I think the most meaningful part of the project was being able to use our voices to spread awareness throughout the community.

Oil Trains

Posted by Yaseen Thomas in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 10:55 pm

In our video we created a news report focusing directly on the oil train situation directly in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. In this video my partners and I discussed that the issue was and there were two directly affected citizens in the skit as well as two reporters. One of the anchors was on ground zero with the oil trains and protesters interviewing their point of view on the issue, and the other was supposed to be at the broadcasting station all aware of the oil train issue. Overall I chose this topic because it was so close to home, and the effects could affect all of us. But I really chose this because no matter how big the issue is you tend to really not hear about it. Honestly I did not hear about oil trains being a threat to the atmosphere and life until I did that research. If one of these trains blew up it could create an explosion that could destroy the atmosphere immediately.
In my group I was represented as a news anchor. My role in the script was the one who introduced the news station and asked my fellow reporter Menlenda questions because she was the one on the scene. I gave examples to why water is essential and how with the chance of an explosion water would be affected, and we use water for very essential tasks and just living period. I also found out how to use imovie and the green screen so I was able to edit the video also. I also at points when needed recorded. I did well with making sure I was distinct and easy to understand in my video. I think I could of did a better job with getting all my shots done with one take because if you pay close attention I think my clothes changed 4 times in that one video which is supposed to be one day. The most meaningful is the fact that this can really open awareness. I believe if someone maybe just one person is touched or this can actually change something is pretty interesting. I like this because it finally taught me how to use and operate a green screen.

Environmental Science Pollution Project

Posted by Aaliyah Cooper in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 7:14 pm

Our video was about " educating you on what’s going on around you", but our focus was about pollution. It was about understanding a topic that we all heard many times. Just trying to understand exactly what pollution is. How I contributed to the project was recording my parts and creating the trailer that was in the beginning of the video. What I think I did well was making sure the trailer was edited properly and what could've been done differently was the sound on my project because we seemed to have a lot of problems with that throughout our project. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA is the raising the awareness part and getting people engaged into the project.

Q2 Benchmark Video Reflection David Baker.

Posted by David Baker in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 11:09 am

This project was very meaningful. We got to do a research and learn more about an environmental issue of our choice and spread awareness on that topic by entering a film festival. For our project we covered the littering problem in Philadelphia. My job in this project was the “speaker”, I came up with some of the shots you saw in the film as well as managed supplies. If I could have done something differently I would try and get some more footage of the trash if Philadelphia. The most meaningful part of the project for me was definitely spreading awareness and hopefully inspiring people to pick up after themselves and clean our great city.

Project reflection

our video is about rising awareness for all of the oil trains. We used our governor Tom wolf and our soulda been president, Hilary Clinton. we talked about the problems of train derailments and some laws that were passed to protect the citys, small communities that these trains go by because there are trains that will derail and cause a huge mess for some of the communities.
my role was to research Tom Wolfs point of view on the oil trains and what his plan was to protect Philadelphia if one of these were to crash and make a mess. the other role i had in my group was to host a discussion with Hilary Clinton to also ask her hat she wanted to do with these oil trains as well. I helped both sides of this disscussion and gave them a little background imformation as well. i also went out with my partners to go interview some of the students to see what they thought about the trains and weather they new about them or not.
What did you do well and what could you have done differently?
i think i did well in presenting the information that i had. I think that my group and i did a great job with working responsibly and making sure that everything we did wasn't a last minute kinda of work. i think what i coulda done differently was differently research a little more into this topic and give my audience the full blown version of the oil trains and instead of thinking that if they enjoyed it they would research more themselves
I think to me the most meaningful part was just spreading the word about it. because there were alote of students that didn't even know about these oil trains and just how bad they could be.I thought that since i was spreading the awareness that this generation would be ready for those oil trains that do derail. i also thought that actually making the video with my group was meaningful because i feel i got a little closer to them and got to know them a little more.

Project reflection

For our project we did a psa on air pollution. The psa was basically about what would happen if  to ignore it and about a specific neighborhood in Philadelphia that is immensely affected by air pollution. I chose this because I believe that air pollution is a big problem in America and people don't make it as important as it is. I

I contributed to the project by doing whatever was asked of me and also lending my phone when we were having technical difficulties with the camera.

I did the parts that I did so very well such as doing my part with the voice over and our check points but I wish I would have helped with the editing of the video more.

Overall I think the most meaningful part of creating this psa was being able to inform people of a problem that affects the whole world. Also it was nice to be able to relate this big issue to our own hometown.

Quarter 2 PSA Benchmark #THECRUDEISRUDE

Posted by Cameron Lockett in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 10:30 pm

Reflection:

For our project we recorded a PSA about  oil trains and the danger they have on the surrounding area. We started out with talking about how the trains could fall off the rails and cause an explosion that has the blast radius of taking out a part of Southwest Philadelphia. We continued on with facts about how the trains also release dangerous fumes into the air. The we finished up by saying how if one of the trains did fall over we have no real plan for evacuation, so we would just be sitting ducks. The reason we chose this topic is because oil trains do go through our state, so this issue is real to us. People we love and care about are being affected by these trains, but no one seems to know about them. We decided that doing research on this topic might share some light with people.

I mainly helped by trying to be a multiple purpose tool. As I helped during the research, helped record if Obasi wasn’t there. Did some small edits to help Moesha out. I didn’t want to be a burden on my group, so I tried to help out with whatever we were working on at that moment.

Most of the time if my group needed something I tried to be there for them. My time management still needs work. As for checkpoint 2 I didn’t start working on my part of the research until near midnight.I could have also helped Moesha with the script as she did the main part and I just revised my part later on.

For me the most meaningful part was knowing that we are informing the public of knowledge that the generally don’t know. Who knows maybe somebody in a high up position will notice our PSA and try to make bigger change about oil trains. Since at the moment they are a danger to the general public as they release dangerous fumes, and if they explode the blast radius is too large for those near it to escape in time.

My group's topic  was Oil Trains In Pennsylvania. This topic was completely brand new to me I had no clue oil trains were such a big problem that we are facing. I also found this topic interesting I wanted to know more. Derailment is a huge problem this can cause pollution, and even explosions. Not to mention people's rights are being taken away. These oil trains  are actually placed where many people live. We all share this space so it's very important that we all take a stand for each other! In our video you see how  we explained why this is a such a huge issue.

I'm not sure what role I played in my group. I was everywhere, I did a little of everything. I helped out wherever I could. My main focus was to make sure my group mates stayed on tasked and focused. I made sure we used our time effectively.

I believe I did a good job of staying on task. I believe I did a good job of keeping my group mates on task too. I was a excellent team player. I helped my group mates to the best of my ability. When it came down to it I made we finished. If it's one thing I could of improved on it would be communication making sure my group mates knew what was going on at all times. I would also have made more time to edit, so time manager was something I could of worked on as well.

The most meaningful part of this PSA is that my voice is being heard! I am raising awareness in the community. I feel like I am making a difference I am taking steps forwardin the directions I want to lead by example. If others see how much I care about the space we share hopefully this will get them to be active, and involved   to take steps forward in making earth a better place.

Filthadelphia, PA

Posted by Zoie Jones in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 10:09 pm

Our video features interviews with students and teachers. We named our video “Filthadelphia, PA” because of how much the littering problem and filth has taken over our city of Philadelphia.  We were able to get many different perspectives on the littering problem in Philadelphia. We chose to cover the littering “epidemic” in Philadelphia because we understand how big of a problem it truly is. Everyday walking through our neighborhood, seeing trash makes us feel truly ashamed, especially when it is not much for us to do about it. We wanted to understand how other people felt about trash being in their neighborhoods and the type of effect it could have.

I was in charge or interviewing the people featured in the documentary. I also made the script for the voiceover featured in our project. I feel that I was an effective interviewer that asked the questions necessary in order to get our message across in the video.

I asked very good questions during the interviews. I believe I asked thought provoking questions to our interviewees. I also feel that I did a good job of picking a wide range of students and teachers to interview. I wish we could have got more footage of Philadelphia for the video.

The most meaningful part of this experience was interviewing Mr. Rosen-Long who gave an interesting and very different perspective on the littering problem in Philadelphia. He changed my idea of why there is a litter problem in Philadelphia. I won’t explain what his perspective was because it is featured in our video which I hope you will check out!
