Moesha Grant's Capstone

Women Against Abuse (1)
For my senior capstone, I decided I wanted to reflect on something I’ve struggled with my whole life to close my senior year. I witnessed domestic violence in my home since I was a young child and it often hindered my growth as a person. I wanted to help somebody like me, which is a child who has to deal with constant violence and fear in their home. I found an organization called Women Against Abuse in Philadelphia. I raised a $300 first for this organization and brought toiletries for them. I fundraised through selling Fried Oreos and Brownies at least three times a week since the end of February. I also created a Go Fund Me Page that I shared with the faculty and students of Science Leadership Academy at Dimner Beeber and my community. I posted this page on Facebook and even got my peers and family to repost it. I reached a goal of $250 on Go Fund Me and the rest of the money for the $300 came from my bake sales. I decided to give a financial gift to Women Against Abuse because I didn’t grow up with much money to fund my education or my needs while witnessing domestic violence in my home. My senior project helped me reflect as an SLA Student and citizen by I realized my purpose on this earth is to help someone else and not keep my struggles hidden. In order to help someone, you must share your pain and show them how you overcame it!

Senior Capstone

Administrator. "The Facts on Domestic Abuse." The Facts on Domestic Abuse. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.dvcpartners.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48 &itemid=58>.

This source gave statistical information about domestic abuse against women in America. I took some of this information and included this in my brochure. I found this source useful because I wanted to have some statistics on domestic violence against women in America. Most brochures I’ve read that make people aware about an issue give statistical information. One limitation to this source is these statistics were taken in 2011. I would have preferred something more recent.

Cook, Divas Can. "About." Divas Can Cook. N.p., 16 Apr. 2012. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://divascancook.com/how-to-make-cake-pops-easy-best/>.

This source provides information about how to make cake pops. This source is helping me by I’m learning how to make one of the items I’m selling to fundraise for my capstone. I found this source useful because it’s helping me learn how to create cake pops in four easy steps. Also, this source shows how affordable making cake pops are, which is helpful because they won’t cost me too much to make them and sell them. I can gain great profit from selling cake pops for my capstone. One limitation of this source is it didn’t show where I can purchase the chocolate I need for the cake pops.

Domestic Violence Victim. 2013. Kool News. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.koolnews.gr/bookcinematv/theatro-dromoy-parastaseis-me-stoho-tin-exaleipsi-vias-enantia-ton-gynaikon>.

This source was a picture I got from online to put in my brochure. This source added some intense imagery to my brochure helping me portray my message to my community. I think my brochure looks more appealing with this picture. This image gave my brochure more of a personal touch. The only limitation to this source is I don’t know what country this picture comes from, but it’s not from America because the website is in another language.

"Food Fundraisers - Profitable Fundraising Ideas." Rewarding Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.rewarding-fundraising-ideas.com/food-fundraisers.html>.

This source provides me information on numerous fundraising ideas. The ideas presented in this source can help he get to the goal of my capstone faster, which is a gift of $300 to the Woman's Against Abuse. Different ideas for fundraising will help me keep my fundraising fun and profitable. I don’t want to continue to sell the same items to fundraise all the time because people won’t buy them. One limitation of this source is some of the ideas are too expensive.

"Help for Abused and Battered Women." Help for Abused and Battered Women: Protecting Yourself and Escaping from Domestic Violence. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://www.helpguide.org/articles/abuse/help-for-abused-and-battered-women.htm>.

This source topped off all my information in my brochure about the next steps in getting away from abusers. Also, it presented information on the dos and don’ts for forming an escape plan. Also, what to say and what not to say to someone getting abused, so they won’t over react. This source helped me realize the biggest mistake people make being friends of the victims of domestic violence is judging them or making them make instant decisions. I wanted to make sure this information was presented because it’s a common mistake made. The only limitation to this source is the source isn’t very recent.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. N.d. United Nations. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/bf/d4/e9/bfd4e98d0423a06554fb4958c760eab0.jpg >.

This source was another image I got to put in my brochure. It says stop domestic violence against women on a hand, which is the direct message I want to present in my brochure. I should have took picture myself, but I might take my own photography for my presentation. I found this source useful in supporting the information in my brochure.

"Statistics." Statistics. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://ncadv.org/learn-more/statistics>.

This source also, added to the statistical information surrounding domestic violence against women. I discovered the percentages of women that are based is very high and people don’t realize it. This information will give my brochure more purpose and add intensity to getting the message across that domestic violence is a serious issue in society that is constantly ignored. One limitation to this source is I’m not sure even this information is very recent or has some bias in it.

"Violence Against Women." Am I being abused? N.p., 30 Sept. 2015. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <https://www.womenshealth.gov/violence-against-women/am-i-being-abused/>.

This source provides me information on the signs of early domestic violence against women. This source helped me provide some of the information presented in my brochure. Also, the article discusses an unhealthy and healthy relationship. I used some this information to inform people that are unaware about domestic violence against women to make them aware. One limitation to this source is it doesn’t give information on what to do if you're the friend if someone being abused.

Women, New Hope for. "Abuser Tricks." New Hope for Women. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.newhopeforwomen.org/abuser-tricks>.

This source gave me information on the tricky character presented from abusers. Many people don’t notice an abuser is an actual abuser early until an incident happens. This source gives an inside to victims or people that want to know about the early signs of domestic abusers. This source helped me inform people in my brochure about to catch their abuser early. The only limitation to this source are some of the characteristics they listed of the early signs of an abuser are repeated in just different ways.

"Women Against Abuse." Help Me | Women Against Abuse. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017. <http://www.womenagainstabuse.org/get-help/help-me>.

This source gave me information on how I should go about the goal for my capstone. I’m giving $300 to the organization on this website. I’m also  getting hotline cards from this website for women to call if they want to get away from their abuser. I got information about what a women should do if she is trying to plan an escape from their abuser to put inside of my brochure. One limitation to this source is I still haven’t received hotline cards and it doesn't give much statistical information.

Tower Garden Photo Journal Project

Posted by Moesha Grant in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10:46 am

Before I was given, this project I never knew that planting actual food was possible to do indoors. From all the Ted Talks we watched in class, I realized aeroponic gardening could be a revolution for our society. This could help people deal with the harsh effects of climate change. Tower gardening in class was so much easier and cleaner than gardening outside. Our plants started to show results within a day even though our peppers haven’t grown yet. The only downfall with Tower Gardening is affording the equipment. It’s more feasible for people to afford materials to garden outside than all the materials it takes to tower garden. Tower garden has become a new option for gardening because of the issue of sustainability in the environment. Lately, because of changing climate patterns plants have not been able to grow in sustainable environments. The continuation of burning fossil fuels have contributed to making our environment unsustainable.

Often unhealthy lifestyles have been presented in our societies. In poverty stricken neighborhoods, good insecurities are present and these unhealthy food options are proposed as solutions. Tower gardening is trying to defeat unhealthy living in these neighborhoods. I think aeroponic gardening is great, but the cost of it needs to be fixed so it can available to everyone.

Our Garden Observations & Questions

Plants

Observations/questions

Peppers (Nick)

What color will the peppers be? I observed my pepper seeds were really small. I noticed the vermiculite had to fill over half the hole and I wonder why?

Marketmore Cucumber (Imani)

How long will it take for the cucumbers to sprout? My seed were oval like.  I also observed that the cucumber seeds were relatively smaller than I expected them to be.

The lettuce is currently growing but I don’t see any cucumbers sprouting

My lettuce is currently still sprouting and getting bigger but i still don’t see any cucumbers

I wonder when the cucumbers will start to grow?

The ph balance in our water has dropped

Gourmet Lettuce (Jada)

Why are gourmet lettuce seeds so small? I had to fill my hole differently than everyone else’s because my seeds were smaller. The pH balance of the water is very high.

The lettuce is the only plant that’s growing somewhat.

The tomatoes and the peppers haven’t started to sprout yet.

The cucumbers started to grow as well as the tomatoes.

The lettuce has grown a lot and so has the cucumbers and tomatoes. The peppers haven’t grown at all.

Beefsteak Tomato (Moesha)

1/10/17

How will these large tomatoes grow in a small indoor environment?

I realized the tomato seeds were small compared to the actual size of the tomato when it grows. Each of my group members and I had to plant two seeds each except for Jada and her gourmet lettuce.

1/13/17

The lettuce is the only plant currently sprouting.

When will the tomatoes sprout?

1/17/17

The lettuce has sprouted and so did the cucumbers.

Unfortunately, the tomatoes and peppers haven’t sprouted.

When will the peppers and tomatoes sprout?

1/24/17

The pH balance of the water went from 7.0 to 6.5.

The cucumbers are growing the fastest.

The peppers have still not grown and I wonder why?

I hope my tomato plant doesn't get intertwined with the lettuce.

Reflection

This video was created to inform Philadelphians about the CSX Crude Oil Trains that pass through Philadelphia. I chose this topic because many Philadelphians like myself were naive that trains transporting oil pass through our city. There has been no plan for evacuation created in case an explosion happens. These trains go past the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, and Center City where many people live. The fumes these trains leave behind makes our environment worse than it already is. I think all residents should be aware of what passes through their neighborhoods that could potentially harm them.

My contributions to this project were editing footage and audio for the public service announcement video. Also, I organized times to record and the content that should be displayed in the video. I gathered most of the statistical information presented to viewers. I did well with researching and relaying information, but I could have communicated with my group members more about their contributions. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was getting the SLA Beeber community involved in the project and their opinions. This opened up my eyes to how many people don’t know about what goes on in the places they live in. I think this issue should be brought to the attention of lawmakers, so they could create regulations for the CSX Crude Oil Trains and a plan of evacuation if an accident is to occur.

I Stand With Standing Rock

Posted by Moesha Grant in Environmental Science · Aziz · E on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 11:22 pm

Currently, protestors in Dakota are being tear-gassed because of them preventing the Dakota Access Pipeline from being built. Why are these people protesting?

These people are protesting because of environmental injustice. The current group of people being discriminated against native to the land the Dakota Pipeline is being built over. This pipeline could possibly poison their water source. This pipeline is in Dakota, but it affects us Philadelphians. Our tax dollars and teachers’ pensions are being used to pay part of this project. If this project could possibly endanger others why are we funding it? This question has been avoided.

The government hasn’t made any solutions to the conflict surrounding the Dakota Pipeline, but this hasn’t stopped the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. They’ve been creating social media pages, petitions, hashtags, and protests. There might be hope the ending of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the near future. A big foreign investor has divested from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Energy Transfer Crude Oil Company is scrambling for money to continue their project, but they’re running thin in time to meet their deadline.

“Pennsylvania Oil Spill”

Pennsylvania…. The place where the greatest things of this country were accomplished. Where the representation of what Brotherly Love was originated. What is this happy place? Full of different people as idealistic as can be. Children sprouting with knowledge like vines. The perfect state and perfect home, but where there is light it must be darkness.

A third-grade teacher 15 years into their career pray for a peaceful retirement. Not only peaceful but guaranteed like how you expect the ground always to be beneath your feet when you take your next step. A monstrous oil poisons and forbids our pursuit of happiness as Pennsylvanians. We’re blinded of where these “tax dollars” that supposedly help to make a better society go…
Our money has no intent to be used for good, but to harm the water supply of others. Yes, water the source of all life! Without water we wouldn’t be in existence. Yet our voices are gripped and ripped apart by officials that don’t care about our lives. Let your voice be heard or continue to let your tax dollars get burned!

1) Describe your project.
My project was the creation of a tie dye shirt with sharpie markers and alcohol.

2) What did you learn while completing this project?

I learned while completing this project because that you can use different materials than traditional ones to create some of the same art projects. Instead of me, using traditional art supplies to make tie dye shirts I used sharpie markers and alcohol.

3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?

The hardest part about completing this project was getting the materials because I was debating whether to get a new shirt from a craft store far from my house or use one of my old shirts.

4) What was the most fun/exciting part?

The most fun/ exciting part was seeing how the chemicals in the sharpie marker reacted to the chemical alcohol.

5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?

If I were to do this project over again, I would get a bright colored shirt and neon sharpie markers.

Día de los Muertos Proyecto

In this project, I participated in celebrating the Day of the Dead. I created a eulogy, sugar skull, and mask to honor my deceased aunt.

Eulogy:

¡Hola mis amigos!

Yo soy Moesha.

“Día de los Muertos” is known as the holiday celebrating the day of the dead. The person I am celebrating for  “Día de los Muertos” is my Aunt Rosa. My Aunt Rosa died in the year of 2004 from natural causes. Her death was devastating to my family. She was a vibrant woman, who always would bring a joyous vibe everywhere she went. Her presence could change the mood of a room from sad to happy. She had a glistening, white smile that she loved to show off. My Aunt Rosa was always the life of the party and people always remembered her for having a good time anywhere she was.

Her fashion sense was spectacular. She would put the wierdest colors together and pull them off. She had a tendency of constantly experimenting with makeup especially her red lipstick. She used her lipstick to make her signature ruby red cheeks.

The thing she most valued in her life is her family. She would do anything for her family even if her life was at risk. My Aunt Rosa was a generous neighbor and gave out to the people of her neighborhood very often. She meant the word to me, even though I didn’t get to know her that long because I was only 5 years old when she died. I always admired how she smiled at the worst times and dressed up in nice jewelry. She made me develop a passion for jewelry. Since, she exposed me to jewelry I never could leave the house without it. Before she passed away, I received a pearl necklace from her. I cherished that necklace because it smelled just like her flowery perfume. The necklace resembled pearl necklaces from the 50’s. Rosa was the perfect name for her because she loved roses and the color red. Also, because of how delicate and graceful she was like a rose.

I decided to create a sugar skull in remembrance of her because I miss her dearly. Since, “Día de los Muertos” is the holiday of celebrating the dead and my Aunt Rosa loved to celebrate and party I figured she would be the best person to use for my sugar skull. My sugar skull reflects her because it has her favorite color red incorporated in it. In addition, it’s very colorful because as I said before she was vibrant and outgoing.  I added feathers to show how elegant and ladylike she was. Glitter and jewel pieces were added to demonstrate how she loved to be bold with the way she dressed and her makeup. Also, how she liked sparkly items. I added a sign saying Queen Bee because she was the queen of my heart. My mask has a similar look to my skull. My mask only has more light colors incorporated in it. I chose to add more feather to my mask because I wanted a 1950’s theme, which reminded me of the pearl necklace she gave me. Women of the 1950s tended to wear head pieces with lots of feathers and since, I didn’t have any pearl charms that’s the only thing I could use.

“Día de los Muertos” opened my mind up to celebrating the passing of loved ones by it made realize you shouldn’t constantly mourn the lost of your loved ones, but should celebrate it because they most likely wouldn’t want you to spend your life being depressed about their deaths. “Día de los Muertos” taught me I should do more to celebrate my deceased loved ones like bringing their favorite items to their graves or playing music for them.“Día de los Muertos” is different from Halloween by it has more meaning to it. On Halloween, everyone looks for candy and spooky stuff, but on “Día de los Muertos” people celebrate and cherish the deceased. They don’t look for candy, but look for the joy of honoring their loved ones. This holiday is so beautiful and radiant to me. I would love to visit Mexico on this occasion.

  1. Describe your project
My project was about the exploration of doodle art. Doodle Art gives a carefree and outgoing vide. IT’s a very random art that does not require a lot of thinking.

  2. What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
The knowledge I already had about the project before I started was I experienced with doodle art multiple times as a child and didn’t even realize it. Again, dodle do not require a lot of thoguht. It requires a moment of creativity. I never their was an actual label for this art until I researched this project and one my peers created a project about it.

  3. What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
The new skill I wanted to learn coming into the project was learning how to draw freehand instead of looking up pictures and drawing them. I wanted to learn how to just throw my ideas into my hand.

  4. Did you accomplish this goal?
I did accomplish this goal because I made things at random on my project. I din’t look up too many ideas from the internet. I just through my ideas on paper

  1. How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?

. I  finished a  well thought out demonstration of what doodle art is. I  feel like I put my all into the project and I turned the project in before the deadline.

  1. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned how to work with the medium markers more, outlining, and experimenting with colors.

  2. What are you most proud of in this project?

I’m most proud of how i got this project done quickly and still felt proud of it.

  1. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?

If I had to do this project over again I would use crayons, instead of markers.

For the art piece, I experimented with the medium marker. I've experienced many times before with the medium marker. I tried different shading with this medium and outlining. This practice with this medium helped me decide what techniques I want to use in my art project. Marker is my favorite medium out of all the mediums. Marker is so simple to use, but has so many possibilities.

Alicia Keys and Pop Art

Artist Statement

As an artist, I create art to demonstrate the meaning of self expression and freedom. I hope to achieve the gift of attracting someone to explore that art world, who doesn’t like art. My goal when creating art is to do something out of usual or express creativity. I started off thinking art was just for people who loved to draw, but art is for anyone who loves to create the unexpected like me!

Part of my process before I begin any of my art is to think about what I like and to research any type of art that fits this category. The techniques I utilize is if the art form matches a part of my identity.

My current piece I’ve just created is “Alicia Keys Pop Art.” I created the theme of the piece by I like Alicia Keys and how pop art favors a lot of famous people. I am attempting to show how Alicia Keys can be n pop art too without using a computer program system.I used shading with various color pencils to sharpen her features. I used markers to make certain parts of stick out. I chose to sketch the picture of her from her album cover “As I Am.” The color of her lips shows how fierce she is. I wanted to make the features and colors of her face dramatic.

As an artist, I try to just gather all my current emotions into a funky idea for an art piece.

Reflection

My project was involving the concept of pop art. When I researched pop art I found that many famous people are involved in it. I chose one of my favorite R&B artist Alicia Keys to do my pop art on. I chose a picture from her “As I Am” album cover.

The knowledge I have already have about the project before I started was pop art was sort of vintage and colored oddly. Also, pop art was in a lot of comic books. Pop art targets the face of a person more than the body.

I wanted to acquire skills on shading, outlining, create all different types of pop art, and creating sketches of people.

I did accomplish this goal.

I know I accomplished this goal because I shaded, outlined, and created a great sketch of a person.

Other skills I learned along the way was creating realistic eyes.

I’m most proud of how I actually sketched a real life person because it was hard for me throughout the project.

If I had to do the project over again I would probably pick another picture of Alicia Keys to sketch.

Experimenting with Markers and Color Pencil

Posted by Moesha Grant in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 8:10 am
For my second quarter individual project I want to do Pop Art. The different mediums used with Pop Art are marker, color pencil, acrylic paint, and photo shop. I want to use markers and color pencils. I practiced in the below image outlining with markers and shading with value. I outlined the lips with red marker, bottom row of teeth with yellow marker, and top row of teeth with black marker. I wanted to shade the lips with a mix of both red and pink lightly on the upper lip and darker on the lower lip. I darkened the yellow color pencil on the bottom row of teeth because that should have been the boldest. I experienced with color pencil that mixing different colors and values create a more realistic shade.

"Fauvism and Natural Hair"

Posted by Moesha Grant in ART ADV - Hertz - b2 on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 12:40 pm

My current piece I’ve just created is “Fauvism and Natural Hair.” I created the theme of the piece by taking my love for watching natural hair videos on YouTube and how the art form of fauvism is so colorful. I am attempting to show how beautiful and free spirited women with natural hair all. I used various colors because fauvism is known for being full of vivid colors. I made a woman with natural curly hair on one side of my canvas and straight hair on the other. The colors also showed how fierce women with natural hair are.

As an artist, I try to just gather all my current emotions into a funky idea for an art piece.

Oral History Report- Moesha Grant

Posted by Moesha Grant in African American History - Roy - E on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11:06 pm

Abstract:

In this interview, Barbara Grant reflects on her experience growing up as a young, female African American in Philadelphia, PA. She discusses how she suffered with racial discrimination all her childhood years living in a predominantly white neighborhood, like high school and going to public places with her parents. Barbara Grant speaks on protest and sit ins she participated in during the 1960s in Philadelphia.  She talks about famous Civil Rights Leaders and their impact on the black community. Grant also expresses her fear as a child of White Supremacy. Lastly, she presents the concept of how racism is still present in today’s time, but is just concealed.

Research:

During the Civil Rights Movement, the White Supremacy was very present. The White Supremacy, were groups that believed they were superior to other racial backgrounds and went to violent measures to keep themselves superior. White Supremacy was also known as white power. When the Civil Rights Movement was taking place civil rights activist and segregationist were head to head like never before. Many whites thought the City Councils weren’t doing enough to keep segregation, so they took it into their own hands. In the beginning of 1963, a group by the name of Ku Klux Klan (KKK) came into play. Their goal was to keep whites in charge and to terrorize black people with violence.  The KKK harmed anyone who was black or was trying to stop segregation. The KKK used all methods of violence to enforce their authority in the South like lynchings, tar-and- feathering, and rapes. One example, of their violent acts was the bombing at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham,  Alabama where four young girls were killed.

Interview with BARBARA GRANT 14 MAY 2014 5:00 p.m.

Place: At Barbara Grant’s Home

Interviewer: Moesha Grant (MG)

Interviewee: Barbara Grant Age (BG), 56

MG: Today is May 14, 2014 and it is 5:00 p.m. I am interviewing Barbara Grant. So, Barbara. . . . What do you remember from your childhood between the time period of when you were born till’ 1965? What was going on during that time?

BG: Umm…. I was born in 1958 in the City of Philadelphia. Umm.. when I was born the Civil Rights Movement was going on equal rights. Umm.. when  I really could understand was in the period of 1964. In the period of 1964,my parents were telling me different places we couldn’t go why there were so much hatred. And I remember seeing marches from to Washington on the TV why they were protesting because we deserved equal rights. I remember umm.. Rosa Park umm.. sitting.

MG: What do you remember about Rosa Parks and the other leaders that were in the Civil Rights Movement?

BG: I remember when they said told Rosa Parks that she couldn’t sit in front of the bus and I asked my parents that’s not fair. Somebody is tired they should be able to sit where they want to sit, but they said because of the separation between white and black. Umm.. there were places  umm. What I remember about her when she came on the bus and protest. And I thought that wasn’t fair that she should have been able to sit where she want to sit, but understanding that…. white people had to sit in front. They came first and blacks in the back. And it’s just like they didn’t want us to umm.. eat in the same restaurants as white people. Umm.. we had to take the back entrance going places. Umm.. I also, remember umm...  Martin Luther King when he started going, walking to Washington and when they were fighting for equal rights. And when he was talking about you know that we should all be equal as one and the dream he had of one day umm.. we would all be equal. Umm…..Rosa

MG: Did you think whites considered themselves better than blacks during that time?

BG: Yes I do, umm….. yes they did. They considered they were better than us. More educated, had more job opportunities than we had. We were always the last the way at everything. You know getting jobs umm… where everybody like wasn’t equal and ways. The way they thought, they thought they were better than any other race. And as we go into 1965, it started to go from, Martin Luther King umm.. marched for peace. They were violent. They became violent people. Umm.. putting hoses on us, umm..  where they didn’t want us. The  Ku Klux Klan showing the hanging of us. The different umm.. things they would do to us if we came into their neighborhoods and the burning down of the houses and stuff. That frightened me because I thought maybe that would… I didn’t know if it was going on in Philadelphia or not. I know it was going on in the South because my parents both come from the South. My mother especially and especially it was going on near South Carolina. Umm..

MG: Did you think that, that era needed to happen in order for blacks to come up in society of how they are now?

BG: Yes, because that made us umm… better people we strived for more things. Umm.. to prove our point that we were not ignorant people because whites always said that we were ignorant people and we needed to go back to Africa. We didn’t.. all of us didn’t come from Africa. Africa maybe our heritage, but I was not born in Africa, so a white person telling me to go to Africa. Go back to Africa is not where I was born. Umm... I was born in the United States, so I didn’t think that... that was right. But as of now seeing where things have gone we have come a long ways. In which, that movement happened to push us. Even though, today in society we still have prejudice. We still have White American Corporation, but there we are still striving. We still need our young people to strive more to head off where we started a path, so Martin Luther King’s Dream has not died it’s still going forward.

MG: Have you had any experiences like you may not remember the Civil Rights Era, but in general of racism with discrimination or anything like that?

BG: Yes, umm.. I have umm.. We moved to a predominantly  white neighborhood in 1969, which my father wanted me to have a better education.  We moved to Montgomery County and which it was like 10% Black and 90% White. So umm... we had sit ins because they wanted to keep us separated from each other. They really didn’t want us in their schools or to ride their school buses, so even though it was now 1969 and I was going to high school it was... still hard during racial.. And I have experienced with sit ins, where we protested.  You know against that we should be treated. You know it was even in the lunchrooms. Umm… they didn’t like umm.. going, you know getting the same trays. You know calling us “niggers.” At one time, we did get into a fight, which we didn’t like the “n- word.”  Even to society today, they still use the “n-word” and umm... without the protest and Martin Luther King and all the other great ones that walked. That did the march and protested and fought for our rights. I don’t think black people would be where they’re at today, so were still continue on fighting.

MG: So, do you remember… the Black Panthers during that time?

BG: Yes, I do.

MG: What do you know about them?

BG: Umm... they were umm.. motivated. Like they as I can remember they were a group of people that had they own set of rules. Umm... they wanted to take over and they became the Islamic umm… Movement. So, the Black Panthers were like a group of people that were against a lot of things that Martin Luther King was saying. They figured that we could get things better done with violence and still Martin Luther King was walking  for nonviolence. So, they fought against that you know. They figured that they can do things a lot better.

MG: So, do you think racism is still present in today’s era and time?

BG: Yes, I do(2x), They still have places in the South where  umm..black people can’t drink from water fountains or black people can’t sit. It’s more umm… in today’s society. They try to hide it, but it’s still there. It’s even in our basketball courts umm... You know it’s still here in America… still racial going on. Even  predominant whites are now mixed with blacks, but they still say that they should be with their own race and black women still say that you know that black men should be with their race. But it seems to have a change.

MG: Do you think that change was for the better?

BG: Somewhat, umm… I still think that it puts a gap between blacks and whites, where I think that umm.. As a society today, that when the basketball players, football players, etc. start making money they think that they should have a white woman in their life, instead of a black woman. I don’t think that’s fair because… we are equal. There’s no because you're making money now doesn’t mean that oh.. you can’t have a black wife you know. So, society.. they think that society looks at them better by them making money and have a white woman, instead of a black woman. You know, so that’s I don’t think that that’s right.

MG: Thank you I’ve appreciated interviewing you.

BG: Thank you very much!

MG: I love your input!

BG: Thank you very much!

Light Me Up Taylors by Jada Martin and Moesha Grant

We chose to make this  sculpture because it represents an item in our sense of style. Jada and I both like the Chuck Taylor Brand because it represents us growing up and comfort. Chuck Taylors often remind us of the summer activities we often did when we were young. Adding the lights to the shoe shows how we want to grow out of old things and make our mark on the world. Also, we chose this sculpture because adding lights is easier than any other object we thought of with the holes on the side of the shoe.
