Natural Disasters and Earth Systems-Earthquakes

Posted by Katherine Russell in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · Y s1 on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 11:36 am

EarthQuakes (1)
EarthQuakes (1)
  1. How do earth systems affect each other?-Earth systems are all connected by energy flow or matter. In this case, earthquakes(part of the geosphere) are responsible for the formation of tsunamis.
  2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters?-If we learn more ways to prevent or stop earthquakes we would be able to prevent casualties and millions of dollars to fix damages.
  3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?-Start by avoiding the changes to the geological formation.

My reaction to our findings was surprising, I wouldn’t have ever thought that the hydrosphere and the geosphere would be connected, especially when it comes to natural disasters.

Natural Disasters: The Tsunami

Posted by Ronald Atkins in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · Y s1 on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 11:35 am

I've learned that Earth Systems affected each other by going through something similar to the Dynamo Effect. This means that whatever happens in one sphere of our Earth System effects another sphere by either completely altering it's state or adding to what's already there. As for a simple example, if participated clouds were to absorb water from the ocean and return it to a landmass with enough rainfall then it may have the chance of causing floods to occur. Studies like this can help us better understand how we can avoid natural disasters so they never happen again. We can use the measurements of what happens in each sphere to determine how we can approach it, and what solution will be the most beneficial . So the efforts we can make to help better our future is to be more vocal, active, and aware of what's happening around us. My reactions to the findings of the group weren't as surprising because to me it seemed like these actions pertained to common sense. However, I am interested in how it's formed.

Tornados, All you need to know

Posted by Gianna Handschin in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · Y s1 on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 11:34 am

What is there to know about tornados? Well, a lot more than you probably remember from 5th grade. A tornado is a perfect example of how the earth systems intermingle. As I said in my group's google doc, (which you can find at the bottom of my post,) the spheres that are affected the most during a tornado are the atmosphere, tornados have extremely high pressures of wind, which contacts the geosphere, the surfaces of the earth, which sometimes kills or injures people which would be a part of the biosphere cause they were/are alive. Knowing how tornados form allow you to spot one, and stay safe if one were to occur where you are living. To ensure a better future, this knowledge can be used one day to maybe develop a way to prevent natural disasters. 1. How do earth systems affect each other? They help each other for example, the hydrosphere helps the biosphere to stay alive. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? Understanding this could possibly help us prevent natural disasters. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future? We could recycle.

2. Our findings were really interesting. It was fascinating to see how the hydrosphere and geosphere interact.
