Emma W - Lead Poisoning PSA
Our PSA is about lead poisoning. I chose this because this is an issue that is very relevant to our city specifically, and even our school. It was really fun to write the script and research more specific statistics.

This video talks about how many houses in Philadelphia have lead paint in them. This paint is especially bad for small children and can cause a multitude of negative health effects for them. It then talks about some things that can be done about this, such as people can remove lead paint from houses and there can be new legislation made to stop houses being sold with lead paint or other lead sources in them. I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting and I was intrigued by the article we read in class about lead poisoning in Philly. I think we did well with compiling overall information, I feel we could probably have done better with time management. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was learning about the different ways lead poisoning could be stopped because it seems like it would be a difficult thing to do something about but some of the solutions are actually quite simple.
Throughout creating this infographic, something that stood out to me is that it was happening in California. I say this because a lot of people want to live/vacation in either California or Florida (which happens to have its own climate change problems with flooding). I wonder if this can actually be fixed and if California can ever gain more water.
The global water crisis is definitely an environmental justice issue because it’s all about the environment and the residents. Water is a very important factor in people’s lives and there are millions of people who do not have access to drinking clean water which is actually a big problem. This is a money issue and a worldwide issue, there is a difference between those who have money and those who have little, with the water issue. How can we make a change?
This is a very serious issue being that Sao Paulo supplies over 21.7 million people water, all for it to be shortening quicker and quicker as days go by! This situation needs to be quickly solved as we can’t have this damage the lives of these people. Just imagine how many of them that struggle already.
Considering the information that my group and I discovered, we concluded that the water crisis at hand is quite intriguing. I was not surprised by the fact that California is currently experiencing a drought due to the vast increase in temperature. As I knew prior knowledge, the areas that are closer to the equator are susceptible to possessing high temperatures These high temperatures ultimately lead to droughts, which is essentially a notable lack of rainfall that leads to a low supply of water. A concept that stood out to me regarding the water crisis in California was that the state relies more on the snowpack in the mountains to store water, rather than the occurrences of rain. This made me wonder how snow is utilized more as an essential source of water rather than rain being the main source. In the aspect of the global water crisis being an environmental justice issue, I believe that it is. Due to how environmental justice is essentially a fair treatment of all people on Earth regarding the environment, the global water crisis falls into this concept. Since humans rely so much on the water to survive if this water is not accessible to all that would have a great correlation to environmental justice issues.
This may not seem as important to your life as other things but I ensure you that the water crisis is real and coming faster than you think. It really stood out to me because it’s so close to what we call home. If this issue is so close to us when will we begin to feel the effects? Its important that we act on the crisis before it’s too late
Some people might say that the water crisis is an environmental issue while others may disagree. I feel that the water crisis is an environmental justice issue because environmental justice is about the people and for the people. Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, etc. So no matter the situation it is supposed to benefit all people. If people in lower or higher income areas have water that has lead or some type of issue then it should be fixed because if not then we the people have to suffer. A lot stood out to me. It just shows the similarities and differences that many different areas face. I feel that each issue could have a variety of ways of being solved but has yet to be done. I felt that in all places funding is hard and that may be the hardest part. It’s like we want to help and we try hard to but our trying could be damaging this more. How can we make a change?
I’m wondering if we can just create rain clouds everywhere like once a week to keep a steady water cycle and prevent droughts. This crisis in an environmental justicwe issue because people in areas that are less cared for are more affected by droughts than people who can afford to live in a better area.
A global water crisis is definitely an environmental justice issue. In class, we defined environmental justice as addressing the ecological-related problems that could have a sufficient externality of other people, especially those in marginalized groups. Considering that water is both part of the Earth and a fundamental component for human survival and function, any problems that would arise with the water supply or distribution of water would clearly be an environmental justice issue.
