Water Pollution PSA

Posted by Emily Cajamarca in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · A s1 on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 10:52 pm

For this project, we were given the task to create a PSA on a topic that we were given. My group did water pollution since it has become a big issue today that is talked about alot. We see it everywhere but many don’t do much about it, this is something that affects all of us. The water we drink can come from a place that is polluted and not taken care of which is very dangerous, so we decided to make a video about it. I helped research about water pollution in Philadelphia that can be put into our video. Something I would have done differently is to put some more information about how it affects us politically. I guess the meaningful part is to be able to make a video about our city’s water pollution because I don’t think many know what had happened when our water was unfiltered.

Toxic City Infographic

Posted by Emily Cajamarca in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · A s1 on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Our group read about a school called Watson Comly that is located in Northeast Philadelphia. This school has had at least 38 reports about the high levels of lead in the school which is a big problem. Lead poisoning can affect anyone but it mostly affects children, it can slow down their learning skills. A kid named Dean Pagan that went to Watson was found with high blood-lead levels which caused permanent brain damage. To think that this is happening alot in Philadelphia is scary because we could be affected too. I live in Germantown and there are so many lead reports here because of how old the houses are. This is something that needs to be addressed more so the problem could be fixed. Why is this not something we address more and fixed?

Q1 Benchmark

Posted by Emily Cajamarca in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · A s1 on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 11:25 pm

In this quarter we learned about what we do to affect the earth and explored ways we could help. Our benchmark was to pick an industry and make a sustainable business that could be eco-friendly. My group chose the food industry since it had a huge impact on the earth, however, we had to focus on a specific part of the food industry since it was such a broad topic. We created a bakery that would focus on using its own materials that would be friendly to the environment instead of harming it. The food industry impacts all of the earth’s spheres, for example, the production of food releases harmful chemicals and CO2 into the atmosphere which is a factor of climate change. Each sphere affects one another since they are all connected, if the atmosphere is harmed then it could also harm the biosphere or any other. We need to make more sustainable choices and it can be the smallest thing to help the environment like supporting organizations that are creating more sustainable options for people to choose from. Here is a picture of the bakery we created.

Building a Aquaponic System

I was part of the Power, Pipes, Pumps group where we had to work on building the system so that the water could flow through the plants and back to the tank. My job in the group was to make the Aquaponic poster with information on the Carbon Cycle as well as about the system and how it works. During this project I learned that there is a easy way to grow plant as using just fish and water, you can do it in your own home!

This person who lives in this room is calm and takes a liking to nature so they have big windows. Its the living room, this person has a lot of sunlight coming through this room and some furniture. We see a camera because this person loves photography, a coffee because this person loves their coffee, a flower vase because it belonged to their grandparents.

Think Before You Post

Posted by Emily Cajamarca in Technology- Freshmen · Hertz · a2 on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 6:13 pm
Alicia Kozakiewicz was 13 years old when she decided to meet a boy she has been chatting with on the internet. Alicia thought that the boy she said she "knew" was her age and harmless, but she couldn't have been more wrong. On New Years Eve Alicia went out of her home to meet the mysterious boy, she had been waiting down her block when she finally decided he was not coming seeing that she had not seen a boy calling her name or seem like they were looking for something. Just as she was walking back someone called her name but when she turned around to look she wasn't expecting to see a man much older than her and grabbing her forcefully. The man was dragging her to his car and put her in the back seat, Alicia tried to get away but feared that her life would be taken if she had. They went from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Virginia were the mans home was located. Once they got there the man had her take her clothes of and put some sort of dog collar on. From there she was raped, beaten, tortured and this had gone for 4 days straight. Alicia lost all hope of being free when suddenly FBI's had come to the house she was currently stuck in and saved her. The FBI found her by someone recognizing Alicia through a video that the abductor had taken of him beating her and posting it on the internet. This horrible experience made Alicia have a goal in life, to protect other children from making the same mistake she did and many others.

Alicia's choices that she had made when deciding to meet the boy was not the best. She did not think about the consequences that would come when talking to the stranger. Alicia should have asked herself, "is this safe?", "is he lying about who he is?". She was not taking care of her well being and went with the decision to keep talking to the boy. Immediacy, Permanence, and Lack of control all have a place in this story. Immediacy would be that Alicia had automatically wanted to meet him without thinking about her actions and where this choice would lead her. Permanency is that Alicia would always remember the torture she went through from making the decision to meet someone from the internet. Lack of control is when the man took her and recorded all of things he did to her and posted them online. When you are online remember to think before you post.
