Mya Bulgin & Iris Wilson Capstone

Posted by Iris Wilson in Senior Capstone · Leaness · ILP/TFI/CAP on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:28 pm
For our capstone, the vision that we had was to address and explain serious issues high schoolers are faced with in a way that a younger audience can easily comprehend;we accomplished this through telling of multiple stories which we then compiled into one storybook. The book is divided between three main topics including advocating for yourself, the balance between mental health and school and (whatever the third story is). At the end of each tale, there is a page which details the big ideas and lessons that could be pulled from the story, hopefully prompting the reader to reflect on that. The process of creating this book could described as having three distinct stages; research, story mapping and revision. We were already fairly well informed about the issues we wanted to write about, so the focus of our research was more about how to address such complex problems in a simple way. Once we got a better understanding of how to do that, we had to move onto to actually solidifying storyline details, which took a lot more time because we had to make sure we were only writing things that could also be shown through illustrations. Thankfully, the editing phase was the shortest, as it mostly focused on the aesthetic aspects of the book and it’s quality. This project taught us a lot about how to communicate more effectively in terms of reaching an audience and about how each experience we have is a lesson.

Iris Wilson Poetry Project

Posted by Iris Wilson on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 7:13 pm
Project Summary:

For this project, there were five components. We had to choose a famous Hispanic poet and research who they were. A brief biography about their life had to be written and we would also have to choose one of their poems that we felt as though related to us. We had to write an analysis on the poem, and also write our own poem using the themes that we identified in the poet's poem. We also had to write a brief autobiography, all of which had to be translated to Spanish.

Reflection:

I think that my grade does reflect my work ethic on this project. I say this because I did acquire a decent grade on the project and I feel as though I did work hard on it. I followed the project guidelines because I didn't want to miss any of the requirements or do any unnecessary work. Sticking to doing exactly what was asked of me, definitely took part in earning me the grade that I got on the project. A factor that I succeeded on with this project is the poem that we had to write. I put a lot of time into writing out the poem, translating and making sure that it still flows decently in both English and Spanish. And I wrote about something, or someone rather, that I actually care about; my younger brother Aiden. He is someone I absolutely adore and because of that, writing out positive things about him hardly felt like work. The only real obstacle I faced during the project was trying to decide which poem and poet I wanted to use. There were a lot of different ones and for some of them, it was hard to find the majority of their work so I didn't get the full selection. And even then, it was difficult to determine which of the poems I could really find a connection to. The resource I took the most advantage of during this project would be the activity we did in groups where we read through the poem, identified the theme and then talked about it. For me, breaking the project down the way we broke down the poem during the activity made it a lot easier for me to organize my thoughts and pull out pieces of the poem I thought were worth noting. To work better on my project performance, I think I need to focus on finding things within the project to get excited about. I think my best work develops when I actually have a genuine interest in the work that I have to do and when I have the proper motivation other than just wanting to get the project out of the way. A lesson I learned about time management in regard to this project is that having everything planned out a head of time, makes it less stressful when the due date is closing in. Usually, I work well under time pressure, but with the project spreading it out made it easier for me to really comb through my work before the submission deadline. Advice for myself for the next project would just be to do what you have to do to find the necessary time and motivation to get the work done. And to always be sure to hold myself accountable for getting he work done, not worrying about what anyone else is doing. Very simply, to stay focused all throughout the project.
  • ¿Quién es el poeta?

  • ¿Quién eres?

Me llamo Iris Wilson y tengo dieciséis años.

estás llegando a mi lado

y la noche es un puñado

de estrellas y de alegría

palpo gusto escucho y veo

tu rostro tu paso largo

tus manos y sin embargo

todavía no lo creo

tu regreso tiene tanto

que ver contigo y conmigo

que por cábala lo digo

y por las dudas lo canto

nadie nunca te reemplaza

y las cosas más triviales

se vuelven fundamentales

porque estás llegando a casa

sin embargo todavía

dudo de esta buena suerte

porque el cielo de tenerte

me parece fantasía

pero venís y es seguro

y venís con tu mirada

y por eso tu llegada

hace mágico el futuro

y aunque no siempre he entendido

Project summary and Reflection
For this project we had to pick a Spanish speaking country and create vacation packages with specific details. The details included actual prices, hotel information, flight and transportation, activities along with other things. We were tasked with creating a powerpoint, a video and a brochure promoting our traveling agency and the packages. I feel as though this project was tricky as far as gathering all the information and trying to figure out how to bundle it all together goes. The whole project felt kind of fast, but when it finally came to an end, everyone was relieved.

Project Summary:
For this project, we had to create a news forecast which included five different segments completely in Spanish. The segments were to have an equal amount of lines and the topics were as follows: Weather, Breaking news, Fashion, Health and news anchors. For my group, the project went relatively well and there was a lot of time spent on editing throughout the course of it. Even the time spent out of class working on the project was rather pleasant, given that the entire group got along just fine.

We used all of the categories which included: origin, identification, characteristics, time (time/date), place of event, possession (material) location, opinion, and condition. We had to create sentences that accurately displayed the proper use of ser and estar for the categories, as well as videos on each slide. Iris Wilson: Dia de los Muertos

Posted by Iris Wilson in SPANISH 2 - Moran - A on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 10:58 am
Summary:

For the Dia de los Muertos project, there were five separate components that the project consisted of. The general point of the project was to create something in remembrance of a deceased relative of mine; in this case, my mother’s aunt Aída. For the first one two components of the project, I created a sugar skull and decorative mask that were meant to be symbolic to my aunt. For example, I chose a mask with nature because she had an eye for nature and enjoyed nature. The third and fourth components were written pieces about my aunt’s life and fifth was video which included a eulogy and pictures of her and family.

Dia de los Muertos Project:

My mother’s aunt Adelaida passed away last summer after suffering from alzheimer's for years. I didn’t really know her when she was still lucid, but she meant a lot to my mom. So by extension, she meant a lot me, too. I decided to create my sugar skull in remembrance of her because I feel as though she played an important role in keeping the family together no matter what, she really tried. One of the things that I remember from the family gathering that occurred after she passed away is how a lot of people kept repeating the same things about her. They continually went on and on about she was truly the heart of the family and how she would want nothing more than for everyone to continue being family regardless of the circumstances we may find ourselves in. I never really meet her, but that’s not at all to say that I never knew her. The way that my family would talk about her, I feel as though I might as well as been watching her life story. They would talk about how she loved to cook family dinners and dancing with Tio Mario at family parties. They would talk about how she would always offer whatever advice she had to give and how she always insisted on helping others, even if they didn’t think they needed it. And that’s another reason why I decided to create my sugar skull in remembrance of her; I wanted a reminder of these little moments, because at the end of the day, all these little moments ultimately changed lives. My sugar skull wasn’t really all that complicated; it just had a few things and the reason for that is because that’s essentially what she tried to do for others--make their lives as simple as easy as possible. After finishing the sugar skull, I realized that leaving the white space also connected with the the fact that the majority of her intentions were pure, she really wanted to simply help others and to have them do the same. With both the sugar skull and the mask that I created, I tried to make the most noticeable and notable feature the eyes. On both objects, there are bright red flowers in place the eyes which are supposed to represent the perspective which she chose to look at life from. Flowers have always been something that I’ve connected with beauty so it just made sense to include them because one thing I know for a fact about her is that she ALWAYS tried to see the best of people and see the beauty of things. That was one of the most important lessons she tried to impose on the family, so I didn’t want to have anything distract attention from that main aspect. The feathers that are on the sugar skull are meant to be angel wings, but they are also representing the fact that she was always “as gentle as a feather”. The gold which I also included on both objects was meant to showcase her bright personality, as well as her golden heart. As I mentioned before, she cared deeply about the welfare of others, family or not. Whether or not she was perfect is up for debate, but it went without question that she was truly a good person at heart. She definitely fit the qualifications for having a heart of gold. I remember standing quietly beside my mother and my sister at the viewing watching lines and lines of people filing in. Admittedly, I was a bit confused because there was a large portion of those who I did not recognize from the family gathering. Then it struck me--these were people who she helped in some way, these were people who she touched and people who were her family too, even if the did not share the same blood. Even after death, there she was, bringing people together with her heart of gold and limitless kindness. She turned strangers into friends and friends into a family that would only continue to grow. On the mask, I colored the skull blue in order to represent the calm and the quiet. She wasn’t one to advocate conflict because she felt it was unnecessarily destructive and she often was one of the few people that could defuse tension when there were family problems actually happening. I would say that the main way “Dia de los Muertos” opened my mind up to celebrating the passing over a loved one is through creating physical representations such as the sugar skull and mask. It’s just something I wouldn’t have thought of, but I feel like those things really bring back the reality of it all.

Humans of SLA Beeber: Alba Rhoads

Interview With Alba Iris Rhoads(mom)

by Iris Wilson

Iris: What’s your earliest childhood memory?

Alba: My mom, Delia was cooking and I asked if I could outside and play. She said yes and took us (me, Tita, and Mama) out on to the porch. The fire hydrant was on and some boy were playing in it. They were about 12 years old maybe. I wanted to play too. My mom said okay, but be careful. I ran right up to the front and tried to hang onto it, but the pressure was so high that it knocked me down and split my chin on the ground. My mom was already on her way to me. As soon as I turned around, she was there picking me up. She put me in her little yellow car and my sisters followed. I got three stitches, but I got to eat ice cream at bedtime for two weeks, and stay up watching Alice In Wonderland, Bambi and Pinocchio while my sisters were sleeping.

Iris: How would you define happiness?

Alba: For my kids to get along and always want to help each other out with a lot of things. Doing chores, picking out outfits when one has a date or job interview, building a lego house, looking for a song one of them heard in a movie. Eating a nice affordable dinner as a family once a week, everyone cleaning up afterward. To live somewhere quiet in a more natural environment, and every time we separate, even if one of us is just going to the store….say I love you because god can take up at any moment.

Iris: What’s a story you always remembered and why?

Alba: One time (at Grandma Alba’s house) someone broke in and we (me, Tammy and Sandra) were home alone. I was just a baby so they wrapped me in a blanket, gave me a bottle and shoved me under the bed to hide me. Tammy said I fell asleep in a few minutes. I remember now because I’m a mom and I can only wonder how kids so small, make such a decision under those circumstances and remain so quiet that they didn’t even know we were in the house the whole time.

Iris: Describe your favorite memory.

Alba: My mom, Delia, let us watch Samson and then Delilah put us to bed. She dressed me in my strawberry shortcake pajamas and helped me brush my teeth with my smurfs toothbrush. We went to our room and mommy put on the night light for us. I grabbed Raggedy Anne and she covered me with my strawberry shortcake sheet, then kissed my cheek and said she loves me.

Iris: When was the first moment you knew you could trust someone?

Katelynn:

The first moment I knew I could trust someone was when I met my best friend Migdalia Ocasio. I knew I could trust her because she was different from my previous friends I had. Every single time I told her something she listened to me never interrupted me, she didn't make me feel like what I said was stupid she let me truly express how I feel.

Iris: What was a moment of emotional impact?

Katelynn:

I don't if I can say this, um, probably when someone told me they loved me. And it wasn't my mom! It was somebody special and, um yeah and I was just like whoa they meant that!

Iris: If you could change anything you would change anything what would it be?

Katelynn:

I would change some of the decisions I made when i was young, years ago. I would change the people I used to hang around with. You know what, actually they taught me something so actually I would thank them. I wish that I didn't trust them as much as I did, I wish that I stood up to more people in middle school.

The message that I'm trying to convey is that everything you do, even the little things, can possibly have an effect. I chose this image to show this because I thought it was a good representation of how one thing can easily lead to another. The hand touches the water lightly in one spot, but still it causes ripples to move throughout the water. To me, the idea that everything you do effects something else is interesting, and this picture kind of shows it. Simple things such as liking a Facebook page can effect something in your future.
