Abstract:
Since 2017 is my last year as a student at Science Leadership Academy @Beeber, I decided to do my Senior Capstone on “Welcome to Cooking With Jasseca”. As a Cambodian American living in Philadelphia, not many people know about us, our culture or our food. And because of that, I decided to incorporate my love for food and my culture into my Capstone Project. The purpose of my Senior Capstone project is to learn a few Cambodian dishes from scratch with the help of my grandmother and uncle. I wanted to focus on something that is a part of me. As I was growing older, I felt a sudden disconnection from my culture. Though, as I entered high school, I was able to slowly come to terms on who I am and where my family derived from. And so I asked myself the beginning of senior year, “What can I do for my capstone where I will enjoy and learn throughout the process? How can I make a positive impact to others with what I do?” And so I thought about cooking Cambodian dishes! Not only do I enjoy cooking, but I can learn what type of things are used to create these dishes. I decided to make a blogpost where I can put the recipes on in order to share with others who are interested in cooking these delicious dishes! Sharing these recipes with others will allow them to have a taste of Cambodia! So far, I was able to make two soup dishes and 1 appetizer. I hope to continue doing this in the future, adding on more recipes of delicious Cambodian cuisine to my blog.

Campaign Reflection Experience

During my experience volunteering for the polling campaign, it was not what I expected it to be. My first thought was that there would have been more people out in front of the polling place, handing ballots and such during voting times. However there weren’t. There was one person handing out ballots and one person standing by the door at the polling place i was at. What I did during the time that i was volunteering was stand in front of the polling place.

The polling place that I went to was the one taking place at Taggart Middle School. Outside, I was out waiting for people to come in to vote and wait for people to come out from voting to ask them questions from the survey that  we were given from the organization we were volunteering for, The Committee of Seventy.

During my time out there, I did not meet anyone apart from the volunteers who were handing out ballots and directing people on where to vote and how. Overall, I think that volunteering for the elecetion was a good experience, to be involved with the election that was taking place in Philadelphia. However, I did forget to take photos during my volunteering time but I was able to collect a few artifacts from the polling place. But one of the artifacts was a bit shady because the democratic voting paper only had Hilary Clinton as the Democratic Candidate in red and I thought that it was a bit weird that it was like that.

This artifact is a Democratic Ballot listing those in the Democratic party that is running for a certain position. As you can see, only Hilary Clinton is listed as a Democratic candidate running for president.

This artifact was being handed out to persuade voters to vote for Zappala, Democrat for Attorney General.

One of the six elements I used was value. I shaded in the crevices of the objects and used a lot of detail.

The meaning behind our project statue is that as the lights get higher up the building, the better your future will be. All you have to do is strive for it. As long as you work hard for it, you'll get there. You'll get where you want to be.
