Air Pollution

Posted by Nydirah Torrence on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 10:17 pm

Air pollution is caused by fossil-fuels, vehicle exhaust fumes, construction and agricultural activities, natural causes and waste. My group wanted to highlight this issue because we see this problem as a major problem that is causing so many things to happen to our economy. One issue that comes from this pollution is cancer by most people smoking cigarettes that have so many chemicals that are harmful to the human body. Also, in highlighting this type of pollution it generates an essentail message that we care about earth by the changes that are occurring on our Earth such as climate change with the weather being cold one day then hot. Throughout this project I was the researcher that helped my group get all the information about our issues plus telling my team memeber about my findings in order to alert them about what we could add to our project. In reflecting off the project I did well in being supportive for my team memebers. If my group got a chance to redo the project I think we would change our time that we spent in making the video, the video would be don before the due date.In conclusion, the most meaningful part about this PSA is just learning more about air pollution and knowing more about how this issues is really affecting Philadelphia’s community.

Toxic Strawberry Mansion High School

Posted by Nydirah Torrence on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 10:41 am

In our research in studying Strawberry Mansion High School, we found out that the high school needs serious repairs for the students to have a safe school that will not cause any health problems. By looking at the reporting of the school it showed that there are above average reports about the lead in the paint affecting classrooms in which includes pipes that were always affected by the spread of the lead. For example, on the website, the water in the fountain was affected by lead in which affected the students that would usually drink from the fountains. I still wonder about the other schools that might have these same problems and what the school district is doing about the spread of lead before it affects a wide range of kids in schools.

Transportation Benchmark

The Earth systems affect each other in how all systems work together in order for everything to be controlled. The atmosphere provides all of the elements in order for life (Biosphere) to exist such as air that contains carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. The Biosphere has all the animals in which make up life and we know that life includes water(Hydrosphere) that nutrients all the plants and providing drinking water to humans and animals. Water covers the Earth and the Geosphere (land) needs water in order for all the landforms and soil to be healthy.

In my group’s project, we create a sustainable Earth that has trees, frogs, and hybrid cars. The hybrid car that is presented in our visual supports our business name Hydro-Green in which is a company that manufactures hybrid cars. Our slogan is Saving The Earth One Car At A Time, the company manufactures in hybrid cars because they don’t release as much as much gas usual cars and our batteries are not so sensitive so our customers will get the better offer in having a 1-year warranty on their car’s battery. Throughout the process of doing the project, I learned about sustainability; defining as something being maintained over a long period of time. The project taught me that we have to use our resources wisely in order to have resources for the future. Also, it bettered my understanding of how our transportation ways such as cars, planes, trains, and buses really pollute the air of so much gas being put into them and the gas being exerted into the air.

Natural Disasters and Earth Systems Research Project

Posted by Nydirah Torrence in Environmental Science · Sasso · A s1 on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 11:30 am

Each earth systems affects each other by each system giving off energy in order for each one to operate correctly. For example, the atmosphere consists of air including with elements such as carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. By the elements being present in the biosphere, they can be absorbed for all the living forms to use such as animals breathing in oxygen and releasing the carbon dioxide back into the air. Then, the biosphere benefits from the hydrosphere of the system consisting of water and water being an essential natural resource that helps make plants grow. By the plants growing the geosphere is healthy by the soil being fertilized. Also, by understanding the earth systems and why they are important benefits our understanding when we face an issue in our environment that could be simply solved by our own knowledge from the environmental science class. For example, in the US we face some seasons in which we get a lot of rain that causes flooding and we could solve this by creating devices that can capture the water for another source to help the environment than flooding homes. Furthermore, to help the future be sustainable we could focus more on climate change in how it’s affecting all living features and we need to create more action plans towards making beneficial changes in our daily routines that cause conflicts. For instance, when our factories are creating objects they are polluting the air and this causes our air quality to be unhealthy and it affects us humans health plus doesn’t benefit the plants that cause them to decay. Then, with humans, we develop health issues. In conclusion, in our findings, we realized that our natural disaster of tornadoes affects most of the earth systems in areas that receive windy and thunderstom conditions.

Caffeine Elimination

Posted by Nydirah Torrence on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 9:04 pm

Do you ever just wake up in the morning and have a taste for a large Dunkin Donut medium iced caramel coffee with sugar and whipped cream with a donut on the side? You might have answered yes to this question but do you ever think about how much caffeine is going into your body? Everyday we go to the coffee shop or Dunkin Donuts and get our nice warm coffee that we enjoy the most and we slug down all of those sugars and other added sugars down our throat and into our body. Maybe we need the coffee for a kick start for the day or maybe we stayed up all night doing homework and we don’t want to be tired for our morning class that we might fall asleep in causing us to be sleep through the whole class period. So we drink the coffee for the energy and the pleasant feeling we get from the coffee.

Caffeine, a stimulant that act in ways that can do good and bad to the body. But do we know all the effects that caffeine can do to the body? If a person consumes 32 to 200 mgs of caffeine it acts a minor stimulants that might just speed up your normal ways in getting through the morning. But if a person consumes more than 300 mg of caffeine it produces a temporary insomnia (trouble in falling asleep) and 480 mg consumed will cause panic attacks for patients with a panic disorders. These effects can be life changing in not knowing when you will have a panic attack or realizing that you can’t go to sleep until you’re up all night just looking at your ceiling trying to fall asleep. Studies show that ¨13 percent of caffeine in the body is eliminated each hour.¨

Over the past weeks in Mrs.Sallo Algebra 2 class we have been studying exponential functions; functions including with a starting point and a decaying/increasing factor. The project that was presented to us was the Caffeine Elimination project in studying yourself or someone that drinks anything with caffeine. I studied my grandmother’s caffeine consumption over 3 days in her drinking sodas such Mountain Dew and Pepsi. The Mountain Dew bottle consumed of 4.50 mgs and the Pepsi bottle consumed of 37.2 mgs of caffeine.

Slide 2. An explanation of how the Internet has changed communication. Make sure to use at least one specific example.

The Internet has changed communication over time by how others use it.  Ex.Communication started from little beepers that hung off people belt now we have Iphones.

Define Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control as they pertain to the Internet and explain how Immediacy, Permanence and Lack of Control affect both our offline and our online identities and lives. Include at least one example for each.

Slide 3. Immediacy- when you post something and open up something and it immeditly shared to others

Ex.When you post a comment on a non- private account and the whole world can see your comment

Slide 4. Permanence- when you post a comment online and it’s forever online.

Ex. Posting a nudity video online.

Slide 5. Lack of Control- when you the user don’t have any control over.

Ex.The story we read in class when the boy had a gay roommate and he put a camera in the room to record his gay roommate and his boyfriend.

Slide 6. What are two ways that you can actively manage and protect your identity and your reputation online? (one of each)

Create a private account;not sharing any personal information

Creating a page with the little star on your page that shows your the real user/account owner

Slide 7. Answer the question: “Does the Internet have rules?” Use at least one specific example.

Yes,The internet have rules. Why because in my opinion I considered the laws to the Internet as rules based on what you can or cannot do. For example,The First Attendant. Anonymity (Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press)The freedom to publish any written work anonymously.

Slide 8. Define cyberbullying in your own words.

Cyberbullying is bullying that is over a monitor device controlled by a person(s).

Describe at least 2 kinds of cyberbullying and why they are considered cyberbullying

Outing-posting someone’s information online.

Polling-the posts that include rates judging others personal appearances.

Both are considered bullying of both types being done online.

Slide 9. Provide advice for: victims, bullies and bystanders of cyberbullying

Victims of cyberbullying just calm down and don’t be scared to speak up for bullying.

Bullies of cyberbullying don’t ever bully anyone’s kids because that is very wrong. And being a bully is not good because it doesn’t make you any better than the person that is getting bullied.

Bystanders of cyberbullying please speak up about what is happening with others don’t be scared.

Slide 10. Your Top 5 tips for using the Internet

  • Don’t post anything that includes with showing inappropriate skin.

  • Everyone online is not your friend.

  • Don’t share any personal information with people you just met on the Internet.

  • Stay away from others that encourage you to do bad stuff on the Internet.

  • Remember your rights including with the First Amendment.

Creepy Clowns

In different parts in the United States clown threats/sightings have been recently the main story in local news. The clowns have been creating fake social media accounts getting others attention of threatening them of coming to their schools and lots of reports against the clowns been reported. The past week a 13 year-old girl in the Philadelphia area was identified on her social media account of how she made clown threats as a prank but not to harm others, she referred. On Monday,in Virginia a 13 year old was legally arrested of socializing with a clown on social media to kill her teacher. Also,in Texas a 14 year-old was charged for making threats on social media to others.Recently, the police been working on the clown threats by having more security for each school that listed as a threat on the clown pages and tracking down the sightings that was reported.Schools in Connecticut decided to ban all clown costumes or anything that brings terror/threats towards the school for Halloween. Meanwhile, police are still investigating the case upon the clowns.

Based on the clown threats and sightings the clowns are creating terror for others.Resulting to the terror schools are being very strict on how kids dress for Halloween and coming to school. Many parents are creating plans on going out for Halloween and how to avoid encountering a clown.Immediacy played a role in the clown threats and sightings of lots of people getting influenced by the real clowns and following their path that really wasn’t great.Permanence played a role of how the people that are dressing up in the clown costumes permanent records will include their actions of creating a bad affect on the world by how they terrorized lots of people with their threats and encounters on people.Lack of Control played a role of the clowns continuing to terrorize people and not having control to stop,of seeing how many issues they created already.

My advice for the Creepy Clowns is to end the harassing and threats towards others.By ending this others won’t have an problems going places and being worried about clowns being near them.Another solution for the clowns is turning their self into the police and just be off the streets, so no more issues are reported.
