Raquel Singleton Capstone

Posted by Raquel Singleton-Wright in Senior Capstone · Reed · ILP/TFI/CAP on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 10:19 am

For my capstone, I decided to create a project based on my future plans of volleyball and how my experience in high school has helped me with those plans. For my project, I interviewed freshmen who were on the JV volleyball team and asked about their experience and what they are looking for in a captain. My main focus was on the challenges and character traits that a person should have to be a team captain. Based off of the interviews, I learned that you need to be helpful when being a captain and showing leadership. My process for this project was a little rocky at first, but it winded up coming together. I reached my goal of finding what I wanted to learn and other people's interpretations of what it takes to have a leadership role. This project has taught me many lessons. For one, you shouldn’t be afraid to stand up and ask for help. Second, you have to work hard for what you want. These two things are life lessons to go by because it will get you through what we call life. After this project, I hope to be a volleyball coach in the future, but starting off I want to be a captain for my volleyball team in college. This experience will help me be the person that I want to be.

Dance is Life

Posted by Raquel Singleton-Wright in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 3:01 pm

I have created the ballerina because I wanted to draw something that would represent me and what I love to do. I was hoping to achieve showing my personality through my work and showing how creative I am doing it. I think my work communicates to the viewer that the definition of my ballerina is very exquisite and the way that I used the background to bring my drawing out was nice. I have achieved outlining the figure to have straight lines and I also achieved in printing the figure out very nice. My current work relates to my previous work because of the definition that I used for my previous one I used on my current work. An example of contemporary art that is similar to mines is the artist Stephen Mackey. His drawings of Arcadia Contemporary is like mines because his use of dark in the background to bring out the main point of the picture is what I did for my painting. Also his use of colors I would definitely say contrasted together like mines.

The process I used to create my work is I first drawn my figure. Then I transferred my image to my linoleum and traced it. After that I used some tools to carve the figure the way that I wanted it. After this whole process, I started printing my linoleum onto a paper and I chose to do a pink background because I felt like it would have made the ballerina pop out more. Then I was finished after that all I had to was scan my paper. My inspiration for this was me and my personality and what I love to do which is dancing. My work reflects the world I live in and my experiences because this is really all I know to do besides volleyball. My work can influence people to know that you don’t have to draw what everyone else see and know, you can draw something that you know, learned, and love to do. A certain technique is important because like say you're drawing a picture and the way you hold your pencil is important if you want the lines to be hard or soft or curvy or straight it’s all in the wrist. A new technique that I learned is how to carve at a certain angle and basically how to carve linoleum in the way that you want to carve it.

In conclusion I learned a lot from this project and hope that I can have more experience with it in the future because there is many ways that I can do stuff with linoleum cut.

Rocky's Artwork

Posted by Raquel Singleton-Wright in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 5:57 pm

I have created an avocado because I felt that drawing food would have been an easy thing to draw. I was hoping to achieve to make a drawing that would represent what I love to do and what my vision is. I think it communicates with color to the viewer because the colors make my drawing pop out. I think I achieved making the seed of the avocado 3-dimensional. I think I also achieved with using my colors appropriately and in a useful way. My current work relates to my previous work because of the 3-dimensional use of shapes and the use of colors. One example of a piece of contemporary art that compares to my art is Adam Belt. Because of his use of shapes and texture to make his drawing and sculptures.

A process I used to create my work was I first searched a fruit that seemed easy to me to draw. Then, I drew the avocado to see how it would then after that I started to analyze my colors to see how I could use them. After that whole process, I realized that my avocado could turn out like how I wanted it to turn out. One source that inspired my work is Adam Belt. https://www.artsy.net/artist/adam-belt-1 On this link it shows his work and the use of shapes, texture, and use of definition in his work. This really inspired me to create this avocado. My work reflects the world I live in because it expresses the creativity that happens in today’s society. It reflects my life because it shows how hard I’ve worked on it. It reflects my experiences because in the drawing you can see that I used some of the stuff I have learned. My work can influence the world by just seeing how hard I’ve worked and tried to create the painting can influence others to try. A certain technique is important to the work because it can help you to get a good feel out of creating the work. For example, detailing, glazing, palette knife, etc. These techniques are helpful in making your piece of art. A technique that I learned is palette knife. I experimented with color mixing techniques which is what I used to make the colors for my drawing.

In conclusion, I used a lot of ways to show what I was aiming for in making this piece of art. I know it’s not the best painting but I want people to know how hard I worked on this painting. I hope that everybody enjoys.

Color Wheel Project

Posted by Raquel Singleton-Wright in Art 2 · Hertz · b1 on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 3:26 pm

I have created the color wheel because I felt that it would be easier for me to just do a regular circle but I wish that I was more creative in adding stuff to my circle to show some creativity in my project. My vision was to show that I can use tertiary colors, primary colors, and secondary colors for a color wheel. My main vision was to show that I can be very creative in a art project. Which is something I will bring to Quarter 2 project. I expect my audience to know that I at least tried to be very creative in my project and worked hard on it. I think they will say that my project is very nice and she worked hard on getting the right colors. My current work relates to my previous work because I’ve used different colors before to show my creativity.

My work fits in the creativity of current contemporary art. My work fits in with the history of art practice because in this time I am still learning how to do different art styles and how to paint. My work fits into a series of projects I have done because most of them involved being creative and for this project you could be very creative in what you do. How artists use colors to make a nice piece of art influences my images. I have been influenced by Vincent van Gogh because of the creativity he had put into his artworks. I have also been influenced by Pablo Picasso also because of his work. A certain technique is important to the work because it helps you get the right color you need to make your work. My technique is to make sure I mix the right amount of colors to create another color. This technique is important to the work because it is easier to get the right color also so that you don’t add too much of a color. This is also a technique I have learned in the process of making this work.

In conclusion, my piece was overall a good project but sometimes difficult to do because it was difficult getting the right color for tertiary colors and mixing them with white and getting the right color for that. But at the end I still tried my best. My artwork shows the hard work I put in to create it and how I used the colors to express the meaning of my piece.

Final One Point Perspective Project

Posted by Raquel Singleton-Wright in ART 9 - Hertz - a1 on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11:48 am
"I'm cracking up. I'm cracking up."
My backstory to this is I say this a lot and everyone knows that I say this for different meanings. For example, I say I'm cracking up to when things are really funny and to things that I think is annoying. I also say this to express how I feel about certain things. My 6 word memoir connects to my room because it shows that I am watching television and it shows me and my life when I'm saying, "I'm cracking up." One experience that illustrates how I arrived at the memoir is when I realized that I had to think of something that resembles my life I thought of something that I say a lot to every situation in my life which is, "I'm cracking up. I'm cracking up."
