Lead Posioning
For our Public Service Announcement (the video) we decided to make a “Breaking News” video because we thought it would grabs people attention, and make people more aware of the situation going on with lead poisoning. In the video it is split up into different “segments” such as the Introduction, an interview, news reporters talking about the information that we thought was the most important to educate people about the problems of lead poisoning. I chose this topic because I was really interested in researching more about the lead problems in Philadelphia, and also I wanted to educate myself more on this topic. I really wanted to do this topic because I feel like more people need to be aware of this problem, and more people need to step up to fix the many issues that are involved in the city of Philadelphia. I didn’t know much about the lead problem in Philadelphia, and doing this project helped me gain more information and more knowledge about this topic, and also made me want to put a stop to this problem. We need to all come together to fix these environmental justice issues, and make Philadelphia a clean, safe place to live.
Throughout this process I’ve reflected a lot on what I have contributed to the project and the role I’ve played in the group. I contributed a lot for my group since the beginning of this benchmark. I reached out to my group members since the start to figure out if they wanted to be in the group, and which topic we wanted to pick. I contributed to the research part of the project by completing the questions / research I was assigned too, and also adding on to other parts of the research (such as additional research, or helping anyone who needed help for their part.). I contributed in the recording of the PSA too by recording my group members, and also helping them remember their lines, or giving ideas for the video. I also edited the video all on my own with the help of only of two of my group members. I believe my role for this project was to be a helper, and being the person to make sure I’m on top of things and so are my group members. I helped guided them through this project, and did anything they needed me or wanted me to do.
As I reflect on our benchmark that we were given, I believe that there was a lot of things that I did well for this benchmark, and a few things that my group members and I could’ve done differently. I believe throughout this whole process I was well at submitting all checkpoints on time, making sure I completed all of my work (my part) that I was assigned, recording my parts, and also communicating with my group members, and also editing. If we had another opportunity to redo this benchmark over again, I’d do differently is to not rush things, and take my time and look over what we have done because I rush a lot of times because I get stressed and feel the need to rush. I believe next time I would slow down, and make sure the work is done right, and that everything we need done, is finished.
The most meaningful part of this experience of creating this PSA would have to be learning more about the lead poisoning in Philadelphia. This experience made me realize a lot about how big of an issue lead poisoning is in the city. It was amazing learning more about it because we read an article earlier in the quarter about lead, and now we get to make people more aware about it, because if we make people more aware, more people will hopefully join in stopping and fighting to get rid of lead all together (or majority.)

Algebra 2: Caffeine Benchmark
Introduction
Do you drink coffee every morning? Do you like drinking soda? Did you ever wonder how much caffeine you consume in a 48-hour period? Have you ever wondered how caffeine can affect your body? Do you ever wonder what happens to the caffeine after it’s been in your body for a few hours? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions then continue reading to find out how caffeine affects your body!
Caffeine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system, to make us more alert. Caffeine can be found in drinks, such as coffee, ice tea, and soda. It is also found in chocolate, and some gum! Everyday people take in amounts of caffeine (mg). Your body starts feeling effects of the caffeine between 32-200 mg. Your body starts to eliminate 13% of the caffeine you intake each hour!
For example, I recorded six entries of the amount of caffeine that I consumed in a 48-period starting at 6:00 am. I gathered all my information and got the following results in the table below
Caffeine doesn’t leave your body immediately, it takes hours to get rid of caffeine in your body, but in the table above you can see that I consumed more caffeine each time I drank something, you may ask how much caffeine is in your body each time you drink a new caffeinated drink? To figure this out we use exponential functions! Exponential functions are functions that have a constant rate of change, we use the following equation to solve these functions: y=abx . A is the initial change, b is the ratio of change. Caffeine is an example of exponential decay because it’s decreasing as a constant rate.
The following table shows how much caffeine was in my body each time I drank a new caffeinated drink:
As you can see I used the exponential equation each time I consumed caffeine. For each new equation the ratio of change is 0.87 because that’s how much caffeine is left in your body in each hour (13% of caffeine leaves your body every hour). The exponent in the equation I subtracted the number of hours since the start of the day by T (x). I used the curly brackets to show how much caffeine decreased each time I drank something, to show when it stopped.

Dia de los Muertos
Aunt Judy
For my project, “Día de los Muertos” I decided to do my Aunt Judy who passed away on April 19th, 2012 from breast cancer. She was only fifty six years old. She got diagnosed with cancer in 2002. She didn’t have trouble with the cancer till a few years later. So she had to go through chemo, surgeries, cutting her hair and so much more. Cancer takes a lot of people but my aunt kept working, and taking care of her own three kids by herself. In March of 2013 my aunt was put into hospice. This meant the person lives at home, and has to be taking care of my family or nurses. On April 18th, we knew this was going to be the last time we had with my aunt. She couldn’t talk, she was in so much pain.
People always ask me “What did your aunt mean to you?” “Did she teach you anything?” I always think about these questions and sit and reflect on what my aunt has taught me and how this whole death affected my life. My Aunt Judy meant the world to me. Every time she walked into a room, the vibe in the room would just get better. She was one of the most important/ influential people you’d ever meet. Two things she taught me is no matter what life throws at you always remember to stay on your feet, and always live life to the fullest because you never know when the last time you’ll talk to someone. My aunt judy was a hardworking, bubbly, caring, loving person.
I decided to make my sugar skull and mask in remembrance of my aunt to show people what she was like and what she loved to do. For my mask, I colored it pink, and left some parts of it white. The reason I colored the mask pink is because my aunt had breast cancer. Around the eyes of my masks, and the cheeks I added heart stickers to symbolize and show that I loved my aunt. I used purple and pink hearts because purple was my aunt’s favorite color.
The sugar skulls reflects my aunt’s passion for the beach. She loved going to Wildwood, New Jersey every year. She loved the ocean, the sand, the food, the arcades, just everything there. I painted my sugar skull blue and yellow to represent the ocean and the sand. I added blue feathers to also represent the ocean, and used a seashell because my aunt liked seashell
Día de los Muertos has opened up my mind a lot about celebrating loved ones who past away. Before I got this project I thought Día de los Muertos was a bad holiday because it was the day of the dead. In my opinion, death is a horrible thing and it’s hard to bring up the memories of the person, and what happened to them. Día de los Muertos made me think about how it is okay to be happy and celebrate someone who meant a lot to you. On this day you shouldn’t be sad they’re gone, you should be happy that you’re celebrating someone you loved. I think after doing this project I am going to start doing Día de los Muertos in memory of my Aunt and Grandmother because I knew they would want us to celebrate their life and keep their
legacy alive, and not be sad all the time.

Tips for Teenage Development
By: Wendi Joyner, Stephanie Devlin, Domenick Deangelis, Jacqueline Shepherd, Jessica Slachta
Don’t believe everything you hear or say about you and who you are, you are perfect.
Stay true to your own identity, it is always important to know who you really are on the inside. If you forget you may become someone you’re not.
Stick up for yourself no matter how hard the peer pressure is. If it gets too bad make sure you let someone know! It’s never good to keep things like this to yourself.
Never blame yourself for your parents actions.
- Don’t try to change based on what people say.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
By: Stephanie, Autumn, Chris & Nathan
We all have different religions, styles of dressing, and cultural background. Although we have so many differences somehow we find a way to effectively communicate and get along with each other as a whole.Cultural Background is is the context of one's life experience as shaped by membership in groups based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical area. You could keep your cultural background alive by just believing in it and being proud of it.Religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.Last but not least. Style is a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed. In our presentation we will show and tell how we connect through our differences.
Our group question was : How do you make healthy and valuable relationships with people who are different from you?
Our responses were :
Chris’s response: Respect people and treat others the way you will want to be treated.
Nathan’s response:Accepting people for who they are and don’t look at them in a stereotypical way.
Autumn’s response: To never judge a person by their looks.
Stephanies response: Get to know the person first before you start judging them.
Our style of dressing is like the same because we all like to be creative and like to be matching. In this group, even though we are different genders,it is like we think the same when we wear our clothes because we always look well. Even though we are different people we express our self in many different ways and clothing is one of the most important one to us. Also another way we express ourselves is by our religion. In this group of four all of us are Christians. Although we all are Christians, there are different types of Christians. In this group we have Lutheran, Baptist, and New Testament. In other words, some things we believe are different, but we all believe in the Bible. In our video, we also talked about where our great grandparents originated. All of our ancestors are from different parts of the world. Our ancestors came from Ireland, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and America. Since our ancestors come from different parts of the world, we celebrate different holidays. For example, some of us celebrate St. Patricks Day, and others don’t. Some of the holidays that we have in common are Christmas and Thanksgiving. Most of our ancestors immigrated to America a long time ago. We all have different backgrounds, which helps us get along, because we are all different and can learn many things from each other.
During this unit, we learned a lot pertaining to self expression. We had a question that we had to answer in our WeVideo. That question was: How do you make healthy and valuable relationships with people who are different from you?Answering this question,we make healthy and valuable relationships with people who are different by not judging the person. For example we learned about our background, religion, and style of dressing. This helped us learn and deal with people who have different backgrounds and cultures than us.Overall after watching and constructing multiple We-Videos, we learned a lot pertaining to discrimination and judgemental skills.
In our Video we three main themes,Background, Religion, and Style of Dressing. This helped us learn and answer our main topic question which was: How do you make healthy and valuable relationships with people who are different from you. The answer to this question is not to judge anyone, so we went into details, we have similarities and differences in background, religion, and style of dressing. These are topics that mean a lot in our lives, and also these were the topics we all agreed on. As you have already read in the previous paragraph, we went into detail about each topic and how we differentiate and share similarities with ourselves
Therefore, in conclusion making these WeVideo have been an easy way to learn about one another and express your true identity. Collaborating with one another has been a great experience on each part, even when we disagreed. While learning about finding our true identity, I believe our identity is like a jigsaw puzzle, there is still more pieces to be put in the puzzle because we still have more life to live. Before ending this essay I would like to end it with a quote,
“One of the most beautiful qualities of a true friendship is to understand and to be understood.
I think when people watch my video they will understand how I express myself with pictures of my family and friends. This project really made me realize how I define myself and also how I express myself. It made helped me learn more about my classmates because were going to be with them for the next four years and now we know some stuff about them and more about their family and friends. I hope we do more projects like this to learn more about each other.
During this group video I have learned alot of different things and how to work with different people that has different personalities .This video was basically about the four of us in the group and the way that we express gain a strong and healthy relationship even though we have different backgrounds. This was not very hard for us because we came to a conclusion of having respect for each other and listening to each other opinion on different things. We talked about a lot of things like;religion, style of dressing, food, and we all have ancestors from different parts of the world, which I never knew. And we spoke about holidays that we do and don’t celebrate.
Talking about this stuff we got to see what we got in common and what we don’t.We have found out that all of us like to dress well and we all believe in the same religion. We even talked about hobbies and things that we like to do for fun and we all had different hobbies.
We try our best to work well together without allot of arguments and disagreements, and we still had a lot of arguments and disagreements, but I think that is what made us such a good group because some of our arguments taught us why we it is important to listen to someone else idea or perspective on something.
At the end of the day I was proud of working in this group because we brainstorm and put our thoughts together and create a great video. I even learned alot of things about my group members that I didn't even thought about knowing,so I was very proud to work with this group and I will be proud to work with them again because of the communication and the effort that they put into their work.
