In this film, you will see the fun, the games, the tears, the laughter, the experience, and many other things along the way of our lives. We made sure to touch on the hardships, responsibilities, and the reality of our living. There was no script or any written documentation behind this film. We hoped that this video would encourage women who are afraid or feel alone to know that they have support, we hoped this video would teach and educate, and we hope that people understand how how we have worked to get to where we are today. We both have a passion and love for our children, but if this film could change other teenagers lives than we are all for it.
What I did for my capstone I worked with another student name Ashley Bailey. Our mentor for this project is Melissa Lawson. What we did for our capstone was we based this project around our kids and how hard it is to be a teen parent. We did this project because we wanted to get our stories out there to young girls and send a message that it's far from easy to raise a child, go to school and work at the same time every single day. The goal was to do a project that we could enjoy and relate too and to also touch a few young girls to make the correct decision during their teenage years.
It would definitely help if it touches a few girls out there, thats our goal. We do know that it's not going to touch every person out there but this project was definitely worth it. This project was very enjoyable just because Ashley and I love our kids so much it was so nice to put this project together with her. I feel like it came out better than I thought it would in my opinion it was very nice. It meant a lot to me personally to do this project because a lot of people never looked at the hardships of what I have to go through on a daily basis just to try to be the best mother that I can be and also succeed in life it’s really hard. Everyone just look at the cuteness of it all but tend to overlook what we both go through as teen mothers. It's a blessing to be a mother I do know that because it's a lot of women out here who cannot have their own children so I am forever grateful for that. But i just think being a parent for anyone is hard especially a first time parent at that. But as a teen I just think it's even more harder because at that age you are not fully on your own or fully stable. This was by far the most enjoyable project I've had to do all year and I hope that people appreciate our hard work and our story.

Carol Ochs writes a strong supportive message in her, “Resources for Teen Mothers” article. She expresses the hardships of what it is like when becoming a teen mom. The challenge is facing the fact that you have to be a caregiver and a provider for another human being. The challenge is tough and it can be difficult for young women to face. She introduces where young women can seek out for help who can provide moral support as well as babysitting resources, etc. I would like to use this article to spread the positive message that the author of this article gave off and keep the motivation in mind when working with others.

A Social Work Today describes the benefits and beneficial statistics that comes from within having a social worker in school. The dedicated school members for teen mothers give opportunities for students to engage with motivating and positive role models and mentoring opportunities. A social worker’s help could be the difference of a young lady dropping out of school or not in some cases. I would use this article to talk about the goal and finding a role model that is in their best interest for personal reasons, emotional support, parental support, academic integrity, and post secondary preparation.

Sunsational
I have chose to create this piece using limited painting because I really wanted to calmly paint. I feel like painting was the most soothing and the best fit for me, so I chose to do something along the lines of paint. My overall vision for this work was to have sort of like an ombre feel. I used two bright colors and then black because that color is bold and I feel like it really would have made each color stand out on its own. My work communicates calmness. My work does not look like it was too hard to make and you can see the brush lines as well so when I look at it I think of just sitting there and calmly moving my brush along the paper. I think the communication can still be interpreted differently. I achieved the image that I want which was to just have a painting with blended colors and to have a painting where I made colors only using certain colors. This work relates to my last work on the same level that my last work I used colors to really pop and catch the viewer’s eye sight immediately. Well the same applies here. This piece catches viewer’s eye because of the bold colors and how well they pop. Leo Gabin, for example in his Belgian pieces is the exact same method that came to mind in the midst of brainstorming. All of his pieces use bold and colors that pop which is very contemporary because now a days kids are using and wearing all types of bright colors because that is what is in style.
My process for this piece was to complete what I can each day in the given amount of class time we had. I started with the solid black color first since there was no mixing involved using that and then on to the solid yellow since there was no mixing as well. After that was complete was when I moved on to the background because the leftover space which is the background is where the mixing of colors came into place. I mixed the colors on a palette first and then applied it to the brush and then the canvas. There really was no inspirations behind doing this. I just thought of nature and kept going. I just wanted to capture a sunset look and apply a tree. I thought about adding flowers, but I did not think they would fit as nicely. As stated before my image just reflects the world because of the bright colors that are in trend today. I would say that the world and my life is not as peaceful and beautiful as my painting is. To explain that you would have to use a lot more darker colors. My work can impact the world as a goal or to send out a message to make the world calmer or more peaceful. My image can be a representation of somewhere tropical or paradise so, this can give people the inspiration to want to calm and settle down to be able to either view their own world this nicely or to be able to travel somewhere this nicely. Lastly, a really nice technique to use when painting with limited colors is to really make sure you mix your colors well and apply enough color that you needed. I realized sometimes that I would pick up more of a certain color because it was not all that blended. However, a new technique I learned would probably have to be with the background to start painting from top to bottom to capture the colors fading in better instead of corner to corner or section by section. This way the colors really could have been blended better and so you can really distinguish the difference between the different mixed colors.
Lady of Color
This quarter I have challenged myself to make a piece of artwork with a style that I have never done before. Mixed media was new to me, but I enjoyed creating this piece. My overall vision is actually amazement. I really was aiming for something very colorful and I definitely feel like I have achieved that outlook. At the beginning, I had no idea what techniques of mixed media I would use, but the three that I have chosen worked out perfectly fine. As my main materials I used tissue paper, sequins, and pompoms. These object all come very colorful.
I started out with this idea of being having color pop out of the work. I started out with painting white first just because that made sense to have that dry. I then went onto the background of tissue paper and I made my way on down. Nothing was really planned, I simply just laid out the tissue paper, the pompoms, and the sequences. There was no particular plan for where I wanted things to go, I just knew the space that I wanted things to go in and from there I just used up all the space that I sketched out. Along the way I learned I should cover the space that I may not want to get messed up, because when I went to melt the crayon it spilled over a bit on a space that I did not want it to. Fortunately, I was able to fix it up but I now know that when dealing with liquid materials I should cover up parts just in case for a spill over. As far as learning something new, I can take away the importance of probably knowing the quantity and the exact of mapping things out. I was a bit under prepared with pompoms and I had to run out and get more in order to complete the project.
This work just like my other work tends to be very different and stand out to the eye very well. Bella Szeift is a great example of my work comparing to contemporary art work. Her piece of art, Lace Maker was the first piece of work that I saw on the paper that made me think of my own art work. I see a face resembling out of different objects which is the concept of mine. There is a face inside of the objects that were used. Her work is very bold and colorful and I feel that my piece of work transpires the same views.
Overall, my work came out as expected and I am proud of it. There was no reasoning or inspiration behind the thought of making this. I literally have none tried this and found the thought interesting to try. I have learned that you can take just about anything and turn something into art. You can use different tools into a masterpiece. Beings though my artwork is a girl and she is bold and colorful, this idea can be inspirational for other women to really stand out for themselves.
Colorful Dancer
I created an art wheel out of a dancer’s outfit. When I first had seen this idea it automatically made me think about my childhood as a dancer. Instantly I had a flashback on how colorful and bright our outfits were on that stage. There was not a better choice selection for me then to do this dancer. Overall, I had a lot of fun creating the vision and actually creating the work. I think my visual display of the color wheel came out very nice and the time and effort is very well shown as well. Most people should give a positive feedback. I have gotten positive feedback and people’s feedback during the process of the art work.
With that being said, I knew what I wanted and I also took people’s suggestions as well. Most people should give a positive feedback. I have gotten positive feedback and people’s feedback during the process of the art work. With that being said, I knew what I wanted and I also took people’s suggestions as well. Contemporary art has started to be something with the use of a lot of color. A lot of images are blooming with color to get the people’s attention. I have learned that different brushes and mallets work better to evenly distribute the pigments of the color to mix. I have never done a project piece like this, but for being my first time I feel as though I did it very well and I accomplished it because of the positive feedback I have gotten.Qtr 4 Art Benchmark
2) What did you learn while completing this project?
I had to learn what type of markers would be best or would not be. Washable markers did not work, so I had to use permanent markers like Sharpie brand. I also, learned that I had to barely touch the shoe when trying to design because the markers bleed through so fast that I couldn’t press too hard because the colors would spread thickly. I had to dab sometimes to make the marker come out thin.
3) What was the hardest part about completing this project?
The hardest part was trying to hold the shoe was writing on it. I was so focused on trying to hold the sneaker in a right position so that my hand would not smear the shoe. But, also at the same time I was trying to make sure the marker tip was not being pressed too hard so that the color would come out very thick.
4) What was the most fun/exciting part?
The exciting part was when I was finally done. I looked online a lot and I had fun finding so many inspirations as to what designs to do. I could not pick one so I did a mixture of multiple designs.
5) If you were to do this project over again, what would you do differently?
If I was to do this project differently I would either do a graffiti theme just because the designs that I seen looked amazingly, but I just felt like I wasn’t ready for that beings though this was my first time. Also, I think I would use paint to see if I could get a different outcome or find out different techniques needed.

Sugar Skull/ Mask Spanish & Written Portions
God opened up the gates and reached down for one of his angels to come up home on July 28, 2014. Elisha Bull was my brother-in law and still the uncle of my daughter. Elisha was not my blood brother, but he was my boyfriend's blood brother. He was a son, a brother to 4, an uncle to 5, a lover, a giver, a friend, an educator, a peacemaker, and a spontaneous person to be around. He didn’t even have to say anything to you when you or he would walk in. His attitude was very much positive and his head was always held high. He was definitely a good influence of a person. His warm smile would just light up the room and automatically put a smile on your face.
It was a late Monday night when we got this disturbing news. Elisha, an innocent bystander was shot several times in the head, neck, and back area. I remember the exact moment when I received the news by phone. I was laying in the corner of my bed, bored, and watching tv. My boyfriend had called me crying and it was the most devastating thing to hear. I tried so hard to hold back on my tears as I was trying to calm him down because it was really hard to understand him.
I created my mask and my skull in remembrance of Elisha because although he was not blood related, I felt that I actually lost someone close to me. Seeing my boyfriend and his mom who I am very close with and all other friends at their lows really touched me. I really felt their pains as I tried to comfort as many as I could. Although he was not here to see her, Elisha will always be the uncle of my daughter. Elisha’s side of the family and I agree to make it very important to still tell her who her uncle was and all about him. I was aware of how crazy this world is already and it was unfortunate that this happened, but it’s like this incident hit me all over again that tomorrow is not promised. Life can be taken from anybody and it’s no joke. Whether we were close our not, Elisha’s death really touched my heart.
In my sugar skull, you can that the main color is bright and shining. That’s how anyone would see Elisha. He could just walk in the room and light the room entirely. I sat the skull on a glitter card almost as if a resemblance of royalty. He was not just any ordinary boy. He always thought highly of himself so, he would treat himself with nothing less than respect. I also added some sports icons because he was very active in school and out of school. He was a known high school athlete. The little details that were added on were in some of his favorite colors and it was simply to show that he was not just pain so I added some detail. He liked to do things differently and stand out, that’s just who he was.
Overall, “Día de los Muertos” was not something that I was proud to participate in. I agree that celebrating the life of a loved one is a great idea. However, I do not like the face painting or skulls because to me they simply just resemble “the dead” and I do not just want to think about that. I believe that there is nothing wrong with celebrating the life of your loved ones that are no longer with us. Sometimes it’s not as easy as it sounds. Losing someone is very hard and I admit that I feel as though I sometimes am not as strong as I thought I am to go on with this. On the other hand I do not and would not take away from those that do celebrate this holiday.
Eulogy of Elisha Bull
Yo estoy triste, furiosa, y lastimada.
Su familia le encantan y lo extraña mucho.
Abstract Art
Describe your project
My project is a form of abstract art. You see a stream of crayola crayons dripping down the canvas with the word grow highlighted at the bottom. To me it’s sorta like the crayons dripping are continuously growing and me as a person I feel like I am always continuously growing. Even at the roughest times, I always want to grow in some kind of way.
What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
I had just knew that the crayons were made of of wax and once anything wax getting heated it starts leaking. Also, I knew what materials I needed and what techniques to test out so I could have made up my final decision come time for the final project.
What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
Going into this project I wanted to learn how to be in control of the crayons. What that means is the way the crayons dripped and how much they dripped I wanted to be determined by me. I did not just want to make a blob of colors.
Did you accomplish this goal?
Yes, I have accomplished this goal and I loved completing this project. If, I could I would do this again.
How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn’t accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?
I am very pleased with what I created and I’m not just saying that as a settlement. I really love what I have created. I love the feedback that I have been getting as well. When you look at something and really admire it that’s how you know that you have created something well and I feel as though I am going to actually use this piece and hang it somewhere.
What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned that when melting the crayons it was better not to hold the heat gun too close to the crayons because this would created blobs of the colors to come out. Whereas what I had to do was hold the heating gun away and on an angle to get just drips to come out of the crayons.
What are you most proud of in this project?
I am most proud that I have completed the project only because it seemed like I kept hesitating about my ideas. I knew that I wanted to do something with melting crayons, but I was so unsure about the concept behind what I was actually going to do. Now, that I have created this piece I am so proud that I finished it, it’s on time, and I am so proud of what I have done.
What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?
Abstraction
For My Love
Describe your project
My project consisted of canvas stitching for a model of my child.
What knowledge did you already have about the project before you started?
I had done this project before when I was younger. I know that you have to stitch on an angle and you’re going to have to pull out plenty of yarn in order to accomplish pieces.
What new skill did you want to learn coming into the project?
I learned that you can not be rough while pulling your yarn out. A lot of times I had knots with my yarn and this was because I was trying to make sure I had this project complete, so often times I was rushing and trying to move quickly.
Did you accomplish this goal?
Yes, I accomplished this goal. I have a final and completed pretty project. I added her name as well.
How do you know you accomplished the goal? If you didn't accomplish the goal, why do you think that is?
I keep getting compliments on my projects, so I know I did something well. I myself, am proud with my work. I am happy and like what I have created. What other skill(s) did you learn along the way?
I learned how to used the canvas as graph paper, because I wanted my bear to be symmetric on both sides. So, before I actually even started I had to label and use actually markings. What are you most proud of in this project?
I am most proud of how the actually bear came out. I did the bear by freehand and it still came out well. I didn't expect it to which made the project come over even better. What would you do differently if you had to do the project over again?
Ashley's Art Elective Project Preliminary Research
Cute and Cozy
As an artist that I am, I work upon my interests. My interests can be based on my style, personality, my story, my surroundings, society, and anything in particular that I find interesting. For this project piece I had to limit some of these options and create something that inspired me in the present moment. It has been very cold and the weather hasn’t been quite great. Knitting was always something that I would say I wanted to do, but never did. This was the perfect opportunity to make something out of those two thoughts, a scarf.
Knitting is not something that is done fast, especially not a scarf. Thats is why it took me quite some time to finish this. What’s unique about my project is that not only is this for a grade, but this is something that I can keep forever. So, I did not have to stress over this assignment. I actually had a lot of fun learning and trying something different.
Mi Familia, Mis Amigos, Mis Profesores y Yo: Ashley Bailey
Oral History - Ashley Bailey
Abstract
During this interview, Ashley Bailey listens to her grandmother, Lucilla Commander explain what it was like growing up during several racial events. Even in the small city of her hometown Lynchburg, South Carolina where she was born in August 18, 1954. Mrs. Commander was not a slave herself, but as an african american woman she was worked and used like she was a slave. There were ones who she knew because of their race not to cross their line. However, that thought disappeared from her mind whenever she felt that she was right no matter what skin color a person was. If she felt she was right she stood up for herself. This interview covers more information on some experiences, thoughts, and feelings of Lucilla, more than an entire african american society. Although there are some racial relations dealing with property, jobs, discrimination. Usually, some people as well as Mrs. Commander were used to the treatment and just dealt with it.
Research
Since as early as 1960, the african american unemployment rate has been twice the white rate. As of 2010, if the blacks had equal the amount of unemployment rate as the white then there would have been an additional 1.3 million blacks working. If blacks had the same employment rate as white then an additional 2 million blacks would have been working. African Americans earned some what to half of what the whites made. Sometimes employers wouldn’t even get their money from their work. Not only did it make african americans unemployed but it left them homeless and could not provide for himself, yet alone a family. According to my research, african american kids only had half the chance to complete high school, one third of a chance to complete college, and a third chance of entering a career profession when they grew up. All of that also cut down on the african american working percent because so many didn’t have the opportunity to a proper education or were forced to work as for someone. African Americans earned some what to half of what the whites made.

Interview with Lucilla Commander
May 10, 2014
Ashley: Hello, I am here with my grandmother, about to do a short interview, and now she will quickly introduce herself.
Lucilla: I am Ashley’s grandmother. I was born in Lynchburg, South Carolina. It was a small town. I was raised in the country on a farm and I moved to Philly after high school at the age of seventeen, alone.
Ashley: Okay, first question. How would you explain your hardships during the Civil Rights Movement or any other discriminating occasions?
Lucilla: Uhm, well.. I would describe it in a more of a metal way than physical way. Uhm, we weren’t allowed to eat at certain places and ‘uhh we would have to go the back of the establishments to order a sandwich or order our food. We couldn’t go inside. ‘Uhh so that was hardship right there to me or mentally.
Ashley: And did you ever try to fight back?
Lucilla: ‘Uhh, well you know fighting back that covers a whole lot, but I never thought about that. It was just a way of life.
Ashley: Did any of these experiences ever make you want to harm yourself?
*not part of the interview*
Lucilla: No, never. That experience just caused me to want to change my way of life and improve myself.
Ashley: So, how did you hide or show your emotions? In other words, how did you deal with things?
Lucilla: See, I had that right on the tip of my tongue. Hmmmm, what did I say Ashley?
*asks for help answering the question*
Well, I read a lot of books about places that I never dreamed that I would ever visit. So, I mostly buried myself in books reading about a better life.
Ashley: So, that’s how you hid your emotions. So, you never showed your emotions?
Lucilla: No, not really.
Ashley: Okay now, what was your typical schedule like as a worker?
Lucilla: ‘Uhm, well as a worker I started working, well raised on a farm you start working early, but my first physical job and official job was in high school. 9th grade I worked, in the office. From 9th grade through 12th grade and this helped me to pay my way through school and then in 1962 at the age of 17 I moved to Philadelphia and I got a job working in a hospital kitchen and I was making a dollar and hour.
Ashley: Why did you decide to move to Philadelphia?
Lucilla: Because at that time if you didn’t have transportation it wasn’t no way to get…. it wasn’t no jobs really for us down there. It was just farm working back there. Mostly farm working or house working in ‘62.
Ashley: And you said you got paid a dollar an hour. Was that normal for african americans or was that something, like how would you describe how you guys got paid maybe to how the whites got paid?
Lucilla: Well to be honest, making a dollar an hour it was basically black working in the kitchen where I worked at and we all made primarily the same thing at that time. So, I don’t know.
Ashley: Okay, ‘uhm. Did you always follow all of the laws or like did you always obey your authority?
Lucilla: Well, most of the time. If I thought I was right, I stood up for it even if it meant some type of punishment. I still believed if I’m right, I’m right no matter who says I’m wrong.
Ashley: Understood. Now do you feel like you have accomplished anything as a person or do you feel like we have accomplished anything as an African American society?
Lucilla: Well, as a person I would say I have accomplished a lot. When you look back from where I came from. I came from the cotton field, from a farm, picking cotton, harvesting tobacco, and whatever else we grew and from there I went on to working in a hospital kitchen. From there I filed clerk for a company and finally became an accountant for a company at that company.
Ashley: Now, what about African American as a society. What do you feel like we’ve accomplished?
Lucilla: Well, we have accomplished a lot of stuff. I feel we’re able to vote and we’re able to voice our opinion about different things. We have a black president. That’s a great improvement right there. When you think about years ago I never thought I would live to see a black president of the United States?
Ashley: Do you think racism is over?
Lucilla: Well, it depends. There’s all types of racism I believe. ‘Uhh discrimination, it’s all types so my belief there will always going to be some type.
Ashley: No, can you tell about an experience you had, if any where you were discriminated because of your race?
Lucilla: Well, I have… like I said before when I went into a resturant, sat down, and they wouldn’t serve us because of the race. They walked by and acted like we didn’t exist and we were told to just ignore it and just weren’t served.
Ashley: Okay, last question to wrap things up. Did you ever see yourself here today?
Lucilla: As a young girl growing up in the South, no. I thought sure we would have been… no, I just didn’t see myself here today.
Ashley: And why is that?
Lucilla: Because of the way of life back then in the 50’s and 60’s.
Ashley: So, what did you think was gonna happen? Like, where did you see yourself?
Lucilla: That I never pictured myself anywhere. I don’t know. Wait a minute. I didn’t see myself here today because I just thought that. Oh my God… I don’t know Ashley.
Ashley: Well, when you say you no, is there a particular reason why you say no? Or you just thought you wouldn’t make it past everything that was going on?
Lucilla: Everything that was going on and the way… it was just so much going on back then. you just didn’t see yourself making. Some people didn’t see himself making it and I was one of them.
Ashley: Okay, well that’s all for today. Thank you for your time.
Lucilla: Your welcome. I hope I’ve been some help.
